Travelling Abroad for 2 Weeks with a Toddler with Sensitive Skin

Dear Mommas, We are going away for 2 wks abroad next month. One week at a hotel and one week with family. What special considerations should I take into account to care for my 2 year old's sensitive skin? I was thinking of bringing pillow cases from home and 2 of his blankets, in addition to his toiletries. Any other tips?

How do I care for his skin on those long 12 hour airplane rides?

Can I was his hands with baby wipes as opposed to the alchohol stuff as his skin is so sensitive???

Thanks as usual for your great advice and input.

Jilly

What can I do next?

I think that you should relax and enjoy your trip!

Worry about this only if your child has a skin condition that is under a doctors care, and then follow the insturctions you already have, so that you can continue them while you are away. If it is working here, it will work there, but if this is just run of the mill toddler skin that is sensitive in the sense that all children are more sensitive than adults, don't get too worked up about it.

Your baby will be fine! Please stop worrying so much and enjoy your trip!

Hi!

We've traveled abroad a lot with our little one and she, too, has sensitive skin. Good idea to bring your own linens. The air on the plane can be very drying to bring Eucerin, lavender oil, etc, or whatever moisturizer you use on your baby, and reapply every so often to keep skin hydrated.

Enjoy!

Jason's has a great skin care line for children but it does not include lotion. Go to a good natural products store to find a lotion that does not contain damaging chemicals. Pillow cases and sheets are a good idea as those washed in hotels contain irritating chemicals. I am assuming you know that food dyes can be related to skin sensitivies. In fact, all artifical additives should be avoided. Have fun on your trip! ... for the health of your family, E. briggs

Another consideration is laundry. Will you need to wash clothes while you are there or are you packing enough for the whole trip? If you have to wash, you may need to pack your normal detergent or see if your family can get the same there.

Baby wipes are fine for washing hands on the go. I do it all the time and my daughter doesn't have sensitive skin. The alcohol stuff can make kids sick if they lick it off their hands, so I stay away from it! :)

I think bringing along the blanket and pillow cases is a good idea and make sure to have whatever you will need with you on the plane as well. You may need to make a call to the airlines to see how much stuff you can bring on and explain the situation to see if they can make any accomodations or have any ideas on how to make it an enjoyable experience. Because of the new guidelines with liquids/lotions, make sure to bring small containers or a few squirts in a ziploc baggie that you can easily carry on without a problem.

Hope this helps a little. :) Take care and enjoy your trip!

I have 2 children with eczema and instead of buying wipes we make ours out of baby wash clothes. Just put them in a ziploc baggie with a little water, lotion and baby wash.
Pillows/blankets are a good idea!

We use Eucerin products.

There are sensitive baby wipes (no perfume, I buy CVS brand that are real cloth not paper) that we used for wiping faces and hands all the time. The advice about your own detergent or sufficient clothing for the whole time is a good one. Travel-clothing magazines sell these silk bed-liners that are basically a thin silk sleeping bag that you can use to sleep inside a hotel bed so your body does not touch their linen (or dirty beds - made more for people going to underdeveloped countries I think). Depending on his severity you may want to wash one of those at home and bring it. I would also talk to his doctor - you do not say if he has any particular skin condition that requires medicated lotion, etc. Additionally, whenever I travel to Europe I bring children's Motrin, Benadryl for allergic reactions, anti-bacterial cream and band-aids, hydrocortisone cream and pepto-bismul or Tums (but my kids are 10 and 13 now, so make sure to get the right stuff for little ones). Sounds like you are doing the right thing by preparing and then you can relax and enjoy.
