Hi, we are taking our son to NY in a couple of months, but need some guidance on how to prepare for the trip from moms that have done this before. It's a 4 day trip. I have a doctor's appt. there and my husband will be staying w/our son during my appts. so I'm looking for places that he can keep our son entertained for one full day and a half day. Normally, when we go on trips, I carry his carseat & umbrella stroller, but since it's NY, I'm not sure what to expect. How do toddler's ride in cabs? I doubt that I will have enough time to install and uninstall a carseat in a cab? Leaving my son behind is not an option.

Thanks in advance.

We traveled with my son when he was 2 to NYC also. At the last minute I bought a travel car seat. It was like putting on a backpack on him and then using the car seat belt to attach it to the cab. But it was so new to my son and with the new experience, he through a huge fit and we couldn't even keep it on him. So, I just held him in my lap. The traffic from the airport was so slow that it seemed to be okay. Most people don't use car seats in the cab, which I learned when I was there. Good luck! I also H. your doctor's appointment goes well.

Most people who live in NYC ride around in cabs without a car seat. You can also take the subway in which case the umbrella stroller would be easiest. Here is a link with some reviews on possible things to do with him.

The law requiring kids to be in car seats doesn't apply to cabs. However the drive from the airport can be pretty bumpy and cabbies tend to drive a little crazy.

Since your child is two, you'll be buying a plane seat anyway right? I love having the carseat on the plane because I feel it keeps toddlers sort of contained in a familiar place. So you could take your seat w you, use it for the plane ride and cab ride to hotel and then don't use it again until it's time to go home.

I lived there for a long time and would wear my kids in an ergoon short cab rides if possible. But usually we would take the subway everywhere so all you need is the umbrella stroller.

There is so much fun stuff to do with kids there. Check out the natural history museum, the Childrens museum, the scholastic book store downtown, people watching in central park. There are playgrounds everywhere always full of kids. Ita fab place

I H. your health is ok and that the visit to NYC goes well for you. PM me if you need more specific advice.

NY is a GREAT place to keep a toddler busy!

Car seats are not required in cabs. So he will just have to ride on dad's lap or they can take the subway. I would bring a stroller as NYC is a very walking friendly city.

THere is Central Park, which with the green space, fountains and zoo will keep him busy all day as well as various museums and other parks. FAO Swartz toy store, the very large Disney Store on Madison Ave. Circle line boat trip, Staten Island Ferry, South Street Seaport. TONS of stuff for them to do!

We took our daughter to NYC several times and used the car seat only for the ride in the cab from the airport to the hotel. The rest of the time it was just us holding her in the cab. But the stroller was so important so if you're considering leaving it behind because it's a hassle - don't! My husband worked while we were there and my little one and I did tons of walking and people watching and since there was always so much going on, she was thrilled to be in her stroller. I'm a big planner and I didn't even plan a ton of stuff for us to do b/c there's so much going on right outside your door. My parents joined us one time and we did do the double decker tour bus, which she (my DD) liked. But she was so little and doesn't remember it now anyway. The only real benefit is that we can say "You've been to the Statue of Liberty", etc. I did take her to the big Disney store and FAO Schwartz but I was way more impressed than she was. :) Have a good trip and I H. everything goes well.
