Train Set for 2-Year-Old

Any recommendations for a train set for my 2-year-old? I'm ideally looking for something basic that can be added to as he gets older, something that can grow with him. I'm trying to avoid a situation where I end up with a hodge podge of 5 different train sets.

What can I do next?

The only problem we have with the geotrazx, is that you can only use the geotrax stuff with them. We got the circo brand wooden set from Target, and it fits the wooden thomas trains, and the brio trains as well, plus they have several different sets of different sizes to choose from as well.

My kids really like the Geo Tracks. I really like it too. I think I played with it as much as they did. It seems like I started collecting pieces when my oldest was 2. If interested, I'm garage selling a huge tote of Geo Tracks in a couple weeks.

I would say Fisher Price Geotrax. There are easy enough for your 2-year old to set up the basic track by themselves. Also my kids are 10, 11, and 14 and they still play with this set. I love that they always have additional track you can buy to make it as large as you would like it to be.

I'd recommend Geo Trax for a 2 year old, it's pretty much indestructible and has remote controls to control the trains.

My son got some of the GeoTrax the Christmas just before his 2nd birthday. Of course we put them together, but the controls were very easy for him to use. He still loves them and we get new additions to his collection every once in awhile!

My son loves the fisher price geo trax. They have push trains for kids his age and simple to operate battery trains and planes for when he gets older or is playing with dad. I've found them safe durable and a great toy that is growing with my son. I wish you could buy the people sepperate (they come with trains and toy sets) My son loves to play with the "mans" as he calls them.

We got my DD a great Brio train set off craigslist. Since they are super durable, it was like new, and we got well over $100 in pieces for $30. If you don't mind used, I would strongly suggest you look into that. I prefer Brio over Thomas and many other brands because Brio is still made in Europe, while Thomas and others are made in China. Since that lead paint scare, I've been extra careful since I frequently buy used toys. Good luck!

GEOTRAX all the way!! They are very durable, you can add a ton of stuff to them and they will stay together. If your son steps on them they won't break. They also will turn themselves off if not being used after a certain amount of time. They take triple A batteries and we have had the geotrax for 5 years and have only had to replace the batteries 1 time. You can put the tracks in any order . I can't say enough how wonderful they are. They just came out with 3 different airplanes you can stick with them. My kids love them.

We got the Toys R Us house version of the wooden train set. It's waaaaay cheaper than the Thomas stuff but works perfectly with all the Thomas gear. It's by Imaginarium. Not only that, but you don't have all the cheesy Thomas logos all over it either - it looks more like a classic train set. My 3-year old has had them since Christmas last year and he plays with them every day.

We have the Thomas the Train set (the wood version). We purchased it from Learning Express, but I am sure there are other places that sell it.
You can keep adding to the set and since it is great quality wood it will last long enough that your grandkids can use it!

At Toys R Us they sell a very basic wooden train set for Thomas and all his buddies. It is great because at this age they want hands-on playthings. My son loved his.

For my son's two year birthday, we got a Maple Landmark wooden train set. They are really well made, non-toxic stain on the colored cars or parts, and even have little railroad tracks cut into them. They are made in the USA and have tons of options for cars, animal trains, and letter trains. Plus they have super cool bridges and tunnels you can add later.

My son is three and loves his wooden train set. It started with a Brio set, and has grown to include some Thomas the Train pieces as well. Since they are compatible with each other (wood set to wood set only) you can pick and choose what you want. He plays with it almost daily and it still looks great. You can find Brio online, and I am sure a specialty store nearby would have it as well. I know Melissa & Doug make track pieces as well that are interchangeable with the sets. Good luck!

We love Fisher Price Geotrax. They are very easy to set up, durable, and you can be very creative with variations on track layout. Some people think they cost a lot, but really they are comparable to other sets, especially if you add a few pieces at a time. I love the ramp feature that allows for height. This also allows you to go higher and more compact, rather than farther across the floor. I don't like wooden sets, because the ramps tend to fall over unless you screw/glue them, which makes it hard to change layouts. I know little kids love the Thomas trains and we found out that the wooden trains fit the Geotrax track just fine.

Are you looking for something that will last for years, like one he can keep til he's a grownup? I'm not sure they have one that's safe enough or sturdy enough for him right now. If you're looking for a "grow with me" to a bigger kid sized train set, try a wooden one for now. I'd suggest a teacher supply store maybe-anybody can shop there, it's just meant to make it easier for teachers to shop for supplies. Maybe a hobby store would have what you're looking for too (not Hobby Lobby, but Hobby Town). Metal or plastic tracks would have tiny pieces & sharp corners, so I'd go w/wood. Lionel is the first brand that comes to mind, check their website & see if they've got wooden sets-my uncle has a Lionel set from when he was young & it's still in excellent condition.

We've been looking at the Brio & Thomas wooden sets. I've seen quite a few pieces at TJ Maxx. They seem to carry Brio all the time in the toy section.

My son liked the Thomas stuff for awhile, but then didn't care that much about them. There are 2 main problems with Thomas, they are pricey and there are many different sets that don't interact. So, we started our son on one set and when birthday's came along, some got the right set, some got other kind and they don't work together.

Geo-trax he loves! And you can get them anywhere. The kids can build a whole community with an airport and multiple different trains, engines, cars, workers, etc that all work together! Plus they are a good size for little hands. They have remote controlled ones, and ones that you can push around. Plus, you can purchase them just about anywhere. :)

Good luck and have fun!

I agree with doing a wooden train set, the Barnes and Noble by us has one on a train table and it's always amazing to me to watch the kids gravitate to it--also we go to the treehouse museum and often it is hard to get the kids away from the train table to go enjoy the other stuff! lol.
at 2 he can just start with a basic smaller set and then you can buy more pieces to get more elaborate as he gets older, the nice thing about the wooden sets is they are generally very compatible and you can continue to grow them over time. also you could do a train table for him when he gets a little older

if you are looking for an electric one I would wait until he is older--the tracks have the wiring through them and I have seen several get ruined over the years with my family--(I have 7 brothers!! lol)

we started with the Basic Brio set when my son was 18 months and he is now 2 1/2 and loves it even more now. It's kind of a classic wooden train set that you can add different sets etc too!
