Toys/books for a 2+ Yo Boy?

I have a $50 Amazon gift card, and I want to spend it on some nice toys or books for my son. We already have lots of books but if you highly recommend one, I may buy it.
I am especially interested in non-plastic toys that he will enjoy playing with in the next year or two. He already has lots of legos, a wooden stacking train, a playdo set, matchbox cars and other cars, a beginner Thomas set, wooden puzzles (he has outgrown).
He loves pretend play (cooking/kitchen, and tools) so if there are any sets you recommend for little boys, that would be great. He now plays with real kitchen items :-) and a few plastic tools (a saw, pliers etc) I got second-hand.
He goes to daycare so he plays with different toys there as well. I just want something nice that would keep him engaged at home.
Also, would you recommend Melissa & Doug lacing sets or pattern blocks?

Thanks for the suggestions!

What can I do next?

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I ordered 3 nice toys and have a list for future purchases as well :-)

We love the Cowboy and Octopus book!! I wonder if you can get tangram and learning sets on amazon? The Mellissa and Doug magnetic dress up boy is really cute too.

Mellisa and Doug make the cutes little wooden *food* sets. Mine had a pizza and a fruit set. They played with these all the time.

If he likes trains get him more Thomas. My oldest was obsessed with this and would spend hours making tracks and playing with all of his trains. So much great tie in also with books and TV.

We love Plan Toys. They are made from sustainable rubber wood. My son loves the xylophone and the wooden blocks that we have from them. I purchased both from Amazon. They also have adorable wooden food, cars, and other fun toys.

an aquadoodle mat is great. Lasts a long time and wonderful on rainy days. Get him a kid toolbox. My son loves his. You can also buy golf tees and a foam/rubber block that he can nail the tees into. They sell them at craft stores.

We love the Melissa & Doug lacing sets AND they have wooden food sets that come with wooden "knives" he can use to cut them -the food separates by velcro. They have fruit and veggies and the cutest sushi, pizza and cupcake sets!

Also -check out Fat Brain Toys -www.fatbraintoys.com - my youngest will be two on Sunday, and we've purchased from them before for both boys. The Dado blocks are VERY cool and the stomp rocket is an amazingly cheap but entertaining device for children. They ALL love it!
