How do you get rid of tonsil stones? Anyone else out there had to deal with these stinky things? I know you can have surgery and have your tonsils removed, but I have heard there are other ways, besides cleaning and gargleing them out which is aweful.I am looking for a natural home remedy,an alternative solutions besides surgery, any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Oh my gosh I got this from web MD and I have my tonsils taken out when i was 4 cuz they were so bad. But this is an at home treatment and to add to it.... Your tonsils are filled with nooks and crannies where bacteria and other materials, including dead cells and mucous, can become trapped. When this occurs, the debris can become concentrated in white formations that occur in the pockets. so my suggestion girl is to detox that body and get all the bacteria out. look up detox's that sound good for you and doable!!

How are tonsil stones (tonsilloliths) treated?
The appropriate treatment for a tonsil stone depends upon the size of the tonsillolith and its potential to cause discomfort or medical harm. Various options include:

No treatment. Many tonsil stones, especially ones that are asymptomatic, require no special treatment.
At-home removal. Some people choose to dislodge tonsil stones at home with the use of picks or swabs.
Salt water gargles. Gargling with warm, salty water may help alleviate the discomfort of tonsillitis, which often accompanies tonsil stones.
Antibiotics. Various antibiotics can be used to treat tonsil stones. While they may be helpful for some people, they cannot correct the basic problem that is causing tonsilloliths. Also, antibiotics can have side effects.
Surgical removal. When tonsil stones are exceedingly large and symptomatic, it may be necessary for a surgeon to remove them. In certain instances, a doctor will be able to perform this relatively simple procedure using a local numbing agent. Then the person with the tonsil stone will not need general anesthesia.

Hi, My son gets these stones all the time. It bothers him but other than picking them out, brushing and gargling nothing works very well. We went to ENT and he said he could laser the pockets in his tonsills. We decided to just live with it for a while. They really are yucky and stink. I know this is not much help but wanted you to know your not alone with this problem.

My ENT said that you can reduce the size of the tonsils and remove the pockets that trap these stones with a laser. He said it is much better than removing the tonsils completely and much less painful.

The best thing to do naturally is to figure out what triggers your allergies and reduce the exposure.

I have this...and having a good, healthy diet, full of garlic and other infection reducers has drasticly changed this from an almost constant problem to a once in a blue moon thing. Seriously. AND, if you're looking for further remodies I would talk to a naturalpath doctor...they are just great with this kind of problem!!!

Wow, I am so glad to read about this. Each winter my husband and I would have these "stones" and had no idea what they were or what caused them.

We will begin with a sore throat and then realize the stone is at the back of the throat. We had a Waterpick and it worked great to dislodge them. We no longer own one so we now gargle with warm salt water. I also have noticed, if I move my tongue left and right with my mouth closed, sometimes it will dislodge the "stone".

Thanks for teaching me something new. My husband also says thanks for solving this mystery.

i have those too!!! every once in a while. And my husband has them too. I don't think there is any cure for it besides a tonsillectomy.. but I think they're an accumulation of food particles, pus, postnasal drip... (wow that's so gross...haha!) so if you brush after every meal and gargle with mouthwash, it'll decrease them for sure.

Hello S.,

I, too, suffer from these horrible things. I went to an ENT and he said to eat celery, which acts like a natural dental floss. I hate celery, so instead I use a plastic curved monoject syringe (with a blunt tip)to flush out the particles. This is the same syringe dispensed by oral surgeons or dentists to clean out areas where wisdom teeth have been extracted. It works really well. I even use it to flush behind the folds in my throat. I'm glad I'm not the only one suffering. We should have a club!

Have you tried gargling with warm water and salt? If not, try that for a few days and see if that works for you.

I, too, have dealt with tonsiliths since my teens. I've always just coughed them up and spit them out. I know it's an accumulation of food particles, post-nasal drainage, etc. building up in the pockets of your tonsils. If you don't have large pockets, you probably won't get these "stones".

I do have a lot of post-nasal drainage due to allergies that I think contributes to this. One thing that has really helped significantly reduce the number of tonsiliths I get is ear candling. I know it's kind of weird, but it really helps to draw out some of the built-up wax and debris in the ear canal and further into the back of the throat. Since I started doing ear candling every 6-9 months, I have only had one or two tonsiliths between each treatment! I just buy the ear candles at GNC or The Vitamin Shoppe and have my husband help me at home, but you can get the treatment done at various spas, too.
