Toleration of Gross Stuff ( Sorry, HORRIBLE Title )

My son has the stomach flu. I have always been able to tolerate completely disgusting stuff. I chose a profession based on the fact that hardly anything grosses me out. I can't deal with my poor son , I am completely grossed out. Everytime I have to clean him up, I have almost lost it. This isn't like me. My husband asked what my problem was b/c he knows I will jump right in & clean anything up. Even when I used to work in the O.R., I had no problems w/ anything, I would take the hit for anyone that may have a lesser stomach. So, has anyone grown into not being able to tolerate gross stuff that they used to? This has been going on since last night & I have yet to actually become ill , so I don't think it's the stomach flu, for me yet.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Sam I Am!,
Ha! No! but probably what my husband is thinking.
Again, No, not pregnant. I'm on the pill & only have a " 15 % chance, at most" becoming pregnant, anyway. I'm really worried that when I start working again this will interfere w/ my job.
You guy's are kill'n me ; ) , I like One&Done's answer the best ;)

I can handle the kids its the dog that grosses me out! When DD was a kiddo she started puking and I'm catching it with my hands (I know gross) but I didn't have a choice. The dog got sick a couple of months ago and I'm running to the bathroom gagging. My husband is like "wth"!

Hubby can't handle any of that with the kids. I was the puker & pooper cleaner upper! :) He gets the dog!

a 15% chance is still a chance, even with the pill there is a chance. Take a test.

I think it might be because it's your son.
I'm always better with strangers than my own kiddo.
(Which admittedly is not THAT good overall--I'm the squeamish type!)

One and done may be onto something. When I even 'hear' my kids barf I have to leave the room. If my wifes kids get sick, I step right in, no problem and clean the mess. Weird.........

Jim at Home I think it's genetically built into males that they retreat! I'm a vomit in-my-hands catcher and have had every gross thing out of a child on me. I still have the immunity to do that stuff. Perhaps you've just reached your tolerance level. Time for your husband to step up!

As the daughter of a Paramedic, I can tell you that it's not that you are tolerating less, it's that it's your own child. My dad too can jump right in to anything, but whenever I had to get shots or have blood drawn, he would have to leave the room. He can run an iv or give a shot to anyone else except family. He's like this with me, my mom, my son and even my husband. He just can't stand to see his family in any kind of pain or misery.

My boys are 15 and almost 11 and I still can't handle them throwing up. I start dry heaving and gagging. I have always been that way about vomiting.
My husband normally handles that unless he isn't available then well I have to handle it but like I said I'm dry heaving and so on the whole time. My husband can't handle blood but it is a breeze for me. So that is our trade off.

Im the complete opposite. I CANT handle blood and guts. I seriously get sick to my stomach. And I remember telling my husband before my daughter was born that I would handle any major mess as long as he promised to handle vomit duty because for some reason puke just does me in. But now that my daughter is here and I have been projectile puked on so many times I feel like a bit of puke is okay. I still CANt and probably wont ever get over the blood and guts thing - even thinking about it just makes my stomach flop

Maybe it's because he is YOUR child. Not someone you don't know in the OR.

I'll bet that's it.

Hope little guy feels better soon, and that YOU don't come down with it!

Do you always gag when cleaning vomit? I do, even with my own kids. If not, I'm gonna go with pregnant or pre-stomach bug

You know it's usually the SOUND and the SMELL that get me-- hearing and smelling your kid puke is a different experience. I also find things are more likely to make me nauseated in the mornings--NOT because I'm pregnant though (weirdly enough when I was pregnant I got sick in the afternoons!) . The same puke cleaning expereince that didn't phase me at 6pm or will have me hurling at 6am!
