Hi Mamas ~ I bought a "block" of plain ol' Tofu for my 1yr old daughter & have NO IDEA what to do with it! It was on sale & I always hear how it's good for you, etc...Do I just slice a piece off & give it to her plain? Do I treat it like yogurt & add some fruit? Do I put it in with a pasta dish & veges? lol...Any suggestions are welcome. She's a good eater & pretty much will at least TRY something new

What can I do next?

Chicken fried tofu is my favorite tofu recips. I like firm tofu and let it drain/dry for about 30 mins before cooking/using it. Cut it into long strips, dredge it in the same mixture you use for fried chicken (flour, spices and some salt&peper). Fry it for 3 minutes turning it so it cooks evenly. Serve it with cocktail sauce or ketchup. Remember that tofu is VERY bland so the flour mixture that you are dredging it in with give it flavor so make sure its a good mixture. You can always dredge one piece, fry it and see if it has enough flavor in it for you and your little one. Another recipe that I love is eggless egg salad. You drain and dry the tofu and then crumble it up into small pieces (about the same size as you would cut up eggs for egg salad). Then add the same ingriedients that you would to egg salad (mayo, mustard, green onions, salt & pepper). It is best when it sits in the fridge for about an hour or 2 after making.

One of my favorite things to do with tofu is to stir-fry it! Cut it in cubes then fry it in a stir-fry sauce of your choice and some veggies! The tofu will really absorb up the taste of any sauce you cook it in. :)

Tofu is a plant protein. And a real versatile food item.

Tofu comes in 'soft', firm and those 'silken' brands that are in a box.

OH! and as for storing tofu... any uneaten tofu must be stored IN the fridge, AND IN WATER. Very important. If not the tofu won't last and will spoil. It MUST be stored/kept in water. Enough water to cover the top.

Here where I live, it is like a staple food.
One way to eat it is cold... plain, and just slice small cube pieces for her to eat with her fingers. That's what most kids do.

Or yes, you can make stir fry with it with veggies and oyster sauce and soy sauce... but make the tofu the last ingredient you add, otherwise it will break up during the tossing/stirring of the dish as you cook.(the seasonings are all to taste).

As far as tofu... it is eaten a lot in Japan and other Asian cultures. If you like Asian cuisine, one way to eat it is.... cold. Slice it up into about 1/2" cubes, and drizzle with sesame oil, soy sauce, and sesame seeds. Its real yummy. And then you can sprinkle chopped up scallions on top.

Some people like to slice it length wise, and put in in sandwiches too.

Tofu is great in that, it is good with sauces... and it takes on other flavors well, it can be eaten cold or hot.

Or, cut it into small cubes and make Miso Soup. Kids like miso soup... just get "miso" (which is a soy bean paste), add about 1/2 Cup to about 5-6 cups of water (the amount of water to miso is up to you and all according to individual taste), heat it up on the stove top, add some cubed tofu, and some people like to add an egg (an egg dropped into it and swished around with a spoon), and that's it! It's real good, and good for when you are sick too. It's a comfort soup.

My kids liked tofu as toddlers, but not anymore. I know with soy "milk" there are contraindications for it because there are naturally occurring estrogen in it... and basically, soy 'milk' is not a natural soy item that even Asians drink. It is mostly a Western contrivance. So.... but I don't know about Tofu.

I'm sure if you look up tofu recipes and/or Asian recipes with tofu, there are TONS of recipes.

Good luck and hope this helps,
Susan

Hi K.,
My son is 10 months old and he loves tofu. I buy extra firm tofu and just cube it and he goes to town. As he is getting older I have started mixing it with other things to make it more interesting. (Plain tofu is pretty bland.) It's very versatile so you could add fruit to it but I would recommend the silken tofu for that since it's creamier. You can also cook it on the stove marinated in a teriyaki sauce or stir fry sauce to give it more flavor. Just keep an eye out for the sodium content in those sauces as they can be high. I've also baked tofu with BBQ sauce which my son loved. Best of luck to you!
