Oh my gosh, blast from the past when a previous respnse said rags. I can still remember my mom putting them in my hair. =) Anyways I would try the foam rollers, or they have a hard plastic version as well, and lots of hair spray. It works for most of the little girls I know.

Hi. What an adorable outfit!! :D With loose braids, you're going to end up with more of a wave than a curl. You can find foam curlers at most any large store like WalMart, Kmart, Target, etc... These are very easy to put in hair, don't tangle hair as easily as other rollers, and they make nice curls. You can also get "gel" to put in her hair while it's wet and then roll her hair if her hair doesn't hold curls very long (like my daughters'). She doesn't need to sleep in them like I did when I was little. :) You can put them in while her hair is damp and then use a hair dryer to quick dry, or just let her play during the day and let them dry on their own.

My grandma used to tie our hair in rags to get ringlets... when her hair is wet put a little bit of gel in it, then wrap it around the rag (strip about 1 inch wide...) and tie it at the base of her skull. In the morning, let it out and you have cute ringlets. Lots more comfortable than curlers, and safer than curling irons.

Is her hair curly? You didn't really say. K has wavy hair and can curl if done correctly and can be dried straight. We bought the sponge rollers at Wal-Mart in the hair accessory area in Health and Beauty. There are a variety of colors int he zipper bag. We found the green size is perfect for K's hair. She looks like Shirley Temple when we take her hair down and brush it a bit.

We wash k's hair with regular shampoo and then take sections of her hair and roll it up on the sponge rollers. Not dripping but definantly very damp. If it's too dry it won't hold the curl. I let K sit under the hood style hair dryer for about 30 minutes on low to medium heat and then sleep on the sponge rollers. In the morning we take them out and finger brush it or brush the curls where I want them. After an hour or so the curls are lengthening and looking more like a natural curl instead of a poodle...LOL. I don't add any products to the hair at any point, it tends to make the hair sticky and not natural looking.

K's hair will stay looking curly for about 4 days with each day the curl relaxing a bit more, but her hair has some natural curl to it to begin with.

Braids make wavy hair, not curls.

If you wanted to bypass the sponge rollers for a temporary curl that will be gone after a few hours then buy a good brand of heat activated hair spray, lightly spray the dry section, then use a small-medium sized curling iron on tiny sections of her her to form the curls. My beautician says the "heat activated" is the most important part of what I just typed. If the hair spray is NOT a heat activated one then it makes no difference and the hair won't stay curled for more than a few minutes and will fall flat. The hairspray will weight it down and it will not work.

Practice will make it easier for you. I practiced about 4 times before I figured out how I wanted to do her hair for a Shirley Temple number that her dance class did this past May. You'll do just fine and find what works for you and her.

My daughter is three and I am always trying something new with her hair. It's very fine and straight (almost half way down her back) with no bangs. I have curled her hair with a curling iron at times too!! I have braided a bunch of small braids one day then left it in overnight so the next day her hair would be wavy. I have done pigtails, ponytails, side ponytails, half up/half down (also with a ponytail at the base of her head), I've done french braids, side french braids (going over the top of her head from ear to ear), and even a faux-hawk with lots of small ponytails in the middle of her head. I think your best bet is to use a small (1-2 inch) curling iron if you can get her to sit still.

Braids would make wavy hair, not curly. If you are wanting curls there are a few ways you can go about this depending on how thick your child's hair is. If it's somewhat sparse and not too long. You can pin them up in ringlets with bobby pins when it's wet. Once it's dry, just pull take them out and you should get ringlets. Of course you can always use foam rollers/or the foam bendable sticks (I used to use long socks when I was younger), if her hair is longer. There is also the other option of a curling iron and hot rollers. These last two options pose more of a danger of burning, so I would not recommend this unless your daughter is able to sit VERY still.

That would be a curling iron (for the curls in your link).

Braids sprayed with no more tangles will dry wavy, but not curly.

Experiment and see what happens.
I have put braids in my daughters hair while wet and taken out when dry. It makes it more wavy than curly - and oftentimes very frizzy which I end up having to tame.
I have put really tight buns in her hair while wet, and let out when dry. It comes out very loosely curled which is really cute, but not as curly as that pic.
Curls like that will require curlers. Buy the small soft foam ones at the store.
Don't use a curling iron.

I second the rags it works great. Or you could try pin curls. They also make those foam curlers you wrap the hair around then twist together.
