Toddler Fell from Bed

My dd is 2 and she fell from our bed, which is about as high as she is tall, onto the hardwood floor, very scary. She cried for a minute or two and is now happily playing blocks and watching Diego on Nick jr. I checked her baby book, which said to check her for signs of a concussion- shes not showing any of the signs- her pupils dialate normally, shes not sick or confused. I asked her if she has a boo boo, she said her butt/ side hurts. Theres no brusing or red marks, anyone know anything else I can check for?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

People always suggest to call the ER when something happens, in my experience the phone nurses there are extremely rude and all they will ever tell me is that they dont give medical advice over the phone. I am going to keep checking my dd during the night and call our family doctor in the morning. Im pretty sure she landed on her bottom but better safe than sorry. *edit- took her to our doctor this morning and everything is fine :)

I'm sure she's fine. She was probably more scared than hurt.
It sounds like you checked all the right things.
Just keep an eye on her.

Best wishes.

Our doctor said that when our child fell from the bed, that they are only concerned if the child 1) does not cry at all after falling (stunned/brain injury), 2) will not stop crying (badly hurt internally), 3) acts differently after crying (very sleepy or hyper). We were freaked out, but she was fine. If you are concerned I would call the pediatrician for advice, especially with Natasha Richardson in the news not too long ago having a ski accident and seeming fine but she died half a day later. Better safe than sorry.

If anyone is hit on the temples... this is the soft place on the skull and the most dangerous.
The forehead is harder.
So if hit or fallen onto the temple... then be more alert about observing your child.
Or you take her to the Doctor or Urgent Care.

Not all injuries will show a 'bruise' or mark.

Does your family doctor have an answering service? Many have an on-call nurse that can be reached 24/7. It sounds like you have checked all the major symptoms they would tell you to look for, but I always call just for the peace of mind and if they suggest something I may not have thought about. If she is acting normally and conversing with you appropriately, then my guess is she is alright, but you might call anyway. I know how scary that can be!

If you call your doc they will tell you to take her to the ER...if you are really concerned, it's probably the right thing to do.

If she cried right away, is acting normally, sleepy at the normal time, isn't nauseous, can move everything okay, she should be good. If it makes you feel better wake her to just a rouse in about 4 hrs and then at 8 hours. If she does'nt react at all like brushing you away or turn over(move in some way) then call your peds or go to the ER. If all seems good she may have developing bruising over the next 2 days. She should be fine.

ya u taking a relaxing breath. Kids are durable unless they have some weird bone desease n need to be treated fragile. There bones have custion at two there not completely formed and shes fine shes showing no signs. Shes fine. If anything she may have a bruise and i would maybe put a ice pack on her hip. But other than that ur an awesome mom and shes fine now I subcontiously will still watch her but shes fine.

If the pupils dilate, I say no harm no foul. Of course I watch for sleepiness after, vomiting and confusion. But I have never had to take either of mine in bc their eyes have always looked totally normal. It sounds like she took a tumble but is ok. I wouldn't have hauled her to the ER if it was me either, unless some of the symptoms of concussion were occurring. Good luck!!

I'd call the ER or nurse advice line and explain what happened. Falls can be dangerous, she sounds fine but there may be something we don't think to tell you to check her for, best to speak to a professional. Explain what happened and follow their advice.

Hope all is well with your daughter!

if she hit her head on her fall and she doesnt have a bump i would take her to the ER. it is super dangerous for them to have swelling of the brain. our toddler fell and hit his head really hard when he was about 18 or so months old. he immediately had a golf ball sized bump on the head. I was working at the hospital so my husband rushed him up to the ER. I went up with them and the docs checked him out. They are the ones who said it is actually good for a bump to come up on their heads because it is a sign that there isnt internal swelling. they still did all the tests to be sure though. So, about 2 weeks ago when he fell and hit the back of his head on the dresser and he got a huge bump right away we werent as worried. if she didnt hit her head then I wouldnt worry. no loss of consciousness, no change in mental status etc then I would not worry.
