Toddler Bathroom Troubles

My toddler 14 months is going from large stools without giving her 1/2 capful of Miralax a day to too soft stools, like 6 or 7 dirty diapers dailey with 1/2 capful of Miralax. I have tried juice, baby prunes. She is suffering either way. Does anyone have any suggestions to get her regular without the trama of large stools and the pain of having what I call the squirts, just a little bit in each diaper several times a day.

What can I do next?

Can you make her some blended foods with fruits and vegetables? Mine really liked: mango + avocado (you can use frozen mangos), apples & walnuts (pears + walnuts), berries and bananas. All of these fruit/veggie blends will give her lots of fiber, which will help produce regular, nice, soft, shapely stools. :) Another thing that seems to work for us is the Plum Organics Just Prunes baby food. These are just prunes blended with water. If she can suck down one or two of these a day, they will push stuff out. Hope some of this helps.

if you've tried everything else first and still have this problem, constipation is a symptom of milk allergy in some children. you may want to try avoiding dairy for a few weeks to see if that helps....

I had this problem with my daughter who is now 6. I took the doctor's advice and increased her fiber intake and fruits and veggies. Because even though I was giving her all that, I know I wasn't giving her what was considered up to par. After making sure she got up to par on all that, and then even making sure she had a little bit more of the veggies and fruit, she got a lot better. Now we don't have any problems other than it's still a struggle to get her to eat her veggies!

I have had to adjust the amount of Miralax I was giving my daughter who is 13 months. It did help some by giving her yogurt every day. I have given her as little as 1/8 tsp with 1 oz of water/juice. She eats alot of veggies & fruits and it helps sometimes but it also depends on what else she has ate that day or the day before. It seems to be a balancing act but the miralax makes it so that she does not struggle when she needs to go. She has had this issue since she was 2 mos. old. She really never had relief until we started the miralax after 6 mos old. I would back off gradually until you found the right amount which is what my pediatrician had told me to do. If you are unsure check with your dr.

What kind of juices have you tried?
White grape & pear were what I was told work best. (Not apple!)
Foods that begin with "p"--peas, pears, prunes, peaches.....
Add whole grains.
Maybe with a change in diet you can do away with the Miralax?
Good luck!

Talk to her pediatrician about adjusting the Miralax dosage, and keep in mind she needs to drink a lot of water throughout the day for it to work properly. Also back off the juice and prunes for awhile to see how the Miralax will work without it.

The squirts several times/day sounds like she's constipated and has stool that is too large/firm to pass. If that's the case try increasing the Miralax. I suggest you take her to the pediatrician. She may need some extra help to get that stool out.

I would increase the Miralax. Really does sound like she's still constipated. Her condition is called encoreopsis. The liquidy stuff is her body trying to dissolve the large mass that isn't coming out.

Constipation can be a sign of omega 3 deficiency. I know someone who cured her son of chronic constipation and take him off his medication by giving him Efalex. I notice they also have chewable omega 3 supplements now at Whole Foods.
