Hi Moms,

I'll be moving to the area from Cambridge MA in early September. I have a 2.9 y/o and a 14 month old. I'm looking for information. We are thinking about playgroups, toddler parks, activities... Is there anything like a local Center for Families? Or a library that has organized activities? Parks and Rec? Any help would be wonderful. We are excited about our move!

Thanks,

N.

Hi N.,

I live here in Brookside and just relocated here from Chicago 4 months ago. I joined Brookside Moms which has everything to offer that you mentioned. You don't have to live in Brookside to belong - there are members from all areas around here. Check out their website. www.brooksidemothers.org. Anyway, I joined and have met tons of people through them. And they have all the activities and play places scoped out for you already. Their website has a lot of information, but once you join, you get the Linkletter which has even more. And there is a weekly schedule for playgroups for all ages, even some where you can bring both of your children at once. Good luck and welcome to KC.

Welcome to the area!

There are so many great things to do in both areas.

Overland Park has some great parks. They also have Deanna Rose Farmstead- it's free and one the best "petting" zoos. They have an pond that is overstocked with fish and lots of great hands on activities for the kids.

Crown center/Union Station is nice they have exhibits for kids in crown center. During the Holidays Union station has a big train exhibit. My son loves walking the "link" between both places.

Brookside (near the plaza) has a book store that does kids things. I believe Friday night is "movie" night.

Hope this gives you some good ideas.

Have a safe move here.

The Plaza library and the Westport library both have story time. You can check out the events calendar on the library's website www.kclibrary.org. My kids and I enjoy going to these events.

Hi N. s,

i live in the plaza/westport area. i have a 13 month old. i always bring him to the Plaza library. it is brand new and they have a wonderful and huge children's section. they also have two organized activities for one year old's and several activities for your two year old on a weekly basis. for example i take my son almost every wed. at 10:30 to their "baby bounce" it's an hour just for one year olds to play around and read books.
There is also a couple of parks near the plaza (one being Loose Park) which have very nice playgrounds.
About 5-10 minutes from here is the Crown Center shopping center that always has a children's exhibit, that children can play in. And next door is an arts and crafts center called Kaliedascope just for children, toddler age and up. it is open certain times of the year.
These activities are all free.

Hope this helps!
J.

If you are a Missouri resident MO school districts have a group called parents as teachers, which has playgroup which could get you started. This is the phone number for KC north schools but the would be able to direct you to the other locations ###-###-####. Good Luck!

There is the most wonderful library off the plaza. It is located in the southeast corner off the plaza. The Kansas City Public Library has a entire section for kids, a play area with chalk board tables, book, puzzles, and computers. each kid gets their own library card that they use to get on their computers. Fridays they have story time. And I think tuesday nights they have craft night full of finger painting and story time. You can get online to get their schedule.:) My daughter is two and she loves the library. She gets a fruit smoothie and I get a cup of coffee and we can play for hours!!!! Welcome to Kansas City! Have Fun!!

Hi N.! I live in Overland Park and a 3 year old son and an almost 4 month old son! I belong to a local La Leche League group which we have meetings and playgroups and such...it's a great way to meet women. Also, I don't know if you are of a particular faith but I am also President of our church's mom's group which has kids all under age 5. In addition, our libraries are great. I frequently take the kids to events at various local libraries. The main web page for the Johnson county libraries is www.jocolibrary.com and you can get a list of calendar events for all their locations. Feel free to email me at ____@____.com if you want some more info on the other groups/ideas i mentioned.

Have a safe move!
