Toddler - Ogden,UT

I am wondering if I should transform my 26 month olds crib into the toddler bed or just get a twin bed. When do they usually outgrow the toddler beds? She has yet to climb out of her crib but I am trying to plan ahead. She has maybe 7-8 inches before the crib is too short. She is a bit on the taller side. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

my son is the same age and I leave him in the crib because he can climb out of it by himself, and without it you just have to get a rail to keep them from falling out anyways. The other night I put him on his brother's bed. He did not fall out but he ended up underneath it and it really freaked him out when he woke up and couldn't even sit up at 5 am. (this was just the one time) While most toddler beds are pretty low I guess I just don't see the point unless they really don't fit in there.

Since you have the toddler bed, I would use it. My 3.5 year old is very tall for her age, and we are just now going to get a twin bed only because we need the toddler bed for her little brother - but if it weren't for that, she would still be fine in the toddler bed for a while. I didn't read many other posts, but agree with someone else not to spend extra money for a toddler bed - because a twin really is more practical. But since you have the toddler bed, I wouldn't be surprised if you used it until she is 4 or so. Good luck with the transition!

We struggled with this same issue. Our daughter it also on the taller side. We had a friend that gave us their toddler bed which our daughter slept in for maybe 2 months. (it was nice that we didn't have to buy one - it would have been a waste of money.) During that time we ordered a twin bed. We purchased the bed frame from Woodleys. While we were waiting for the frame to be delievered we put the mattress on the floor next to the wall so she could get use to it. It was a very smooth tranisition of all of us! She had no problem with the transitions from crib/toddler bed to twin bed. Just on a side note - we put the bed up against the wall for a few weeks. We talked to her about how we were going to move it away from the wall. And thankfully, she's only fallen out of bed once since we did. We moved it away from the wall because she was sleeping wedged between the mattress and the wall - didn't look too comfortable, plus we wanted her to be able to sleep in a "big bed" when we were away on vacation We got lucky because she's had no problems at all. Hope this helps!

My daughter is on the tall side also, she's almost 3 1/2 now. She's been in the 4-in-1 bed (crib to twin) and we're purchasing a twin mattress for her today. Right now she can probably put toes on one end & reach up easily to touch the other end.
Switched to toddler bed at about 20 months 'cause I found it would be too too easy for her to climb out---better to fall short distance from toddler bed than up to 4' from crib side.
The only reason we used a toddler bed at all was because it's part of the crib "system". Otherwise I think we'd skip it all together, it's just extra cost if it has to be purchased separately.
GOOD JOB MOMMIN'!

I would save the money, skip the toddler bed, and invest in a decent regular/big bed (of whatever size you want). Then also get one of those rails for the big bed to keep them from falling out. They run $20-50 at places like Target.

Both my kids were in the toddler bed for less than a year. The 1st time we actually bought a toddler bed (used, but it was still $100+), and the 2nd time around we converted the crib into a toddler bed. He kept falling out, so we finally moved him to his current bed which is a queen size. That bed had previously been our guest bed, and we didn't see the point in replacing it with something smaller.

I guess that decision is really up to you and if you have the money to buy the twin bed right now. We converted our crib and were able to use it until just recently; our daughter is going to be four in a couple weeks. We didn't have the money to get a new bed when she was done with the crib, so we made do with what we had. Plus, we already had the toddler bed, so why not make use of it? It would be hard to answer the question of when would the toddler bed be outgrown since that would be different for every kid. Our niece was small for her age and was able to fit in a toddler sized bed for much longer than our daughter was able to. Good luck in your decision!

my oldest outgrew his toddler bed when he was 4. unless you are redecorating the whole bedroom, save yourself the trouble and convert the crib to a toddler bed for now.

I'd save the $ and go straight to a twin bed. We did so with our son, and just used a bed rail under the mattress, and it worked wonderfully. If the height of the bed is of concern, I know several moms that just had the twin mattress on the floor, rather than using the bed frame and box spring right away, until the child was used to it. Good luck!
