Toaster or Toaster Oven: Opinions or Things to Know

Well, my toaster decided to become the home for a mouse who decided to make it a coffin. I am in need of a new toaster (hubby is so funny watching him catch mice).

I have never had a toaster oven and I think they might be useful as a mini-oven for small things. But, I also eat a lot of toast, and this is the primary reason I have a toaster.

My question: Is a toaster oven similar enough to a toaster in making toast to warrant getting one? I don't mind giving up the counter space if it is really useful, but if it is difficult to make toast in, and is a hassle, then I'll pass. I would love and appreciate your opinions, stories, and anecdotes. Thanks in advance. Bonus points to those who make us laugh, cause why not?

What can I do next?

If you eat a lot of toast, get a toaster. Simply because you don't have to "watch" it. And they aren't very expensive to replace.

I have a toaster oven as well. I mostly use it for canned biscuits. It will fit the whole can so I don't have to heat up the big oven since I'm in AZ and don't like to use it in the summer. Good luck.

I miss my toaster oven. Fine for toast, can handle the thickest bagel, and can do the occasional baked potato without heating up the oven on a hot day. Go for the toaster oven!

I have t used a toaster in a zillion years. Toaster oven only. To make toast you lay it flat. Put on toast setting. Push start. Easy peasy. I do a lot with my toaster oven. Would never give it up for toaster. If you go with oven, get the bigger one. Makes 4 slices of toast at a time, heat up pizza slices etc. I make biscuits, hot sandwiches. Just about anything you can make in oven you can make in toaster oven. I take that back. No turkeys, roast beef etc. I think you have the picture by now.

I have a good toaster oven story. My husband fancies himself as being quite handy. He tried to repair our toaster oven (this was over 15 years ago) and when it was back on the counter, there were about 4 parts leftover. The first time I went to use it, it caught fire (I can't remember if the food did, or the cord, but there were flames). My husband came in the kitchen, opened the side door and flung that toaster oven out into the snowbank.

That was the last one we owned.

We'd had a very small one before that.

I can't honestly remember what we used it for - mostly things when it was just the two of us. I think things like tuna melts. Sometimes I made chicken in it.

I mostly used one when I was a student. I think I toasted bagels in it before toasters had slots that were big enough for bagels.

I would not personally bother getting another one. I thought of it for my teens - little pizzas, etc. but they just put a whole pizza in the big oven now. I don't want to give up my counter space.

I've had one forever. My 2nd Black & Decker finally bit the dust after at least 15 years (the first one lasted 12-15 I thing), and I just ordered an Oster 6-slice large size toaster oven which will be delivered shortly (I chose based on Amazon reviews, as suggested by Mamapedia members).

I use it ALL the time. Toaster ovens have 3 features - underneath heating (classic oven), top only heating (classic broiling), and top/bottom combined (toasting). I like it because slices of bread never get stuck as in a standard toaster, and there is much more versatility.

This time I got a larger oven so that I can put more in it at one time. I love to cook, but we often reheat leftovers, and it's so much more efficient than heating the main oven. I don't know why people would think making toast is a hassle in an oven - you just put the bread or bagels on the grid, set it for "toast" and wait for both sides to heat evenly at the same time. You can do all thicknesses of bread, bagel slices, etc. I also freeze my bread and defrost a couple of slices here and there for a sandwich, so a toaster oven gives me much more control of the timing. Besides, being able to look in the glass door shows me much more than a standard toaster.

If you want to message me in 3-4 days, I'll let you know how the new one is working out. I chose it because it takes a 9x13 pan and a 9 inch pizza.

I have both and I use them for different things. For simply toasting bread, the toaster is faster for sure, especially on thicker breads like bagels. For reheating pizza, the toaster oven can't be beat. Toast takes a longer time in the toaster oven (a larger area has to heat up). I've also roasted small dishes in the toaster oven (never a mouse, though). But for everyday toasting needs, the toaster is the best. We have a drawer that we keep the toaster oven in...only bring it out when needed. And that's only every couple of weeks. We use the toaster almost daily. If we suddenly found ourselves without the toaster oven, life would go on, I could live without it. If our toaster disappeared, we'd replace it immediately.

For its pizza reheating superiority I would go with a toaster oven hands down.
and it makes toast fast enough for me.

I have a Brielle toaster oven. I paid about $275 for it and it is one if the best choices I ever made. Previously, I had a KitchenAid toaster oven that I used ALL the time!

I have not used my oven in over a year. I use the toaster oven for everything. The Brielle one is larger and fits casserole dishes, good sized pizza, etc.

I still use the toaster for toast but I could easily rely just on the toaster oven if I wanted.

I would suggest to anyone thatbits worth the counter space. My kitchen is lsrge so that part is not an issue for me.

If you get a toaster oven, you'll probably wonder how you got along without one!!

We haven't owned a toaster in over 12 years. I keep my toaster oven in the pantry, but it gets used a few times a week to heat up misc stuff for the kids, and/or toast. I also use it to heat up those bake from fresh loafs. It sure comes in handy in the hot summer to not have a hot oven turned on.

I had both because the toaster oven took more time and the toast was different than with the toaster. I bought a toaster. Like you, I thought I would use the toaster oven to heat up or bake small amounts. I used it for that a couple of times. It just seemed more difficult. Also, food like pizza didn't fit.

I donated the toaster oven. I bought a counter top oven convection oven. Convection ovens bake in half the time as a regular oven. I used a commercial size convection oven and loved it. Food looked and tasted the same as that baked or heated in a regular oven.

I haven't used the counter top convection oven because I don't yet have enough counter space. I will soon.

What can't toast in the wide space toaster,.I put under the broiler or use the microwave.

I had a toaster oven before we had kids and used it often for frozen foods or cheese or garlic toast. I still used the toaster for regular toast. Since I had kids the toaster oven wasn't big enough to use for a family and I used less frozen foods so I got rid of it.

I have a toaster and a toaster oven. When propane is more expensive than food I often prefer to use electricity to cook things. So having the toaster oven is a good thing. I keep it under the counter unless I'm going to use it. There are many things you can do in it.

We also have a convection microwave so we can bake and microwave food.

I think it's just nice to put things away that aren't used every day. I like clean counters.

I find that a toaster oven takes forever to make toast. It's better for using as a small over or to heat stuff up. I have one and want it out!

I really like my toaster oven and have never felt that my toast took too long or didn't taste right. Of course, I don't have a toaster to compare it to, so you may feel differently.

I can toast a lot more at one time in my toaster oven. I usually put in five pieces of bread at a time, or five halves of a bagel, or five frozen waffles. It's great for reheating things that you want to have a little crispiness, instead of the microwave where they come out softer. I use it to heat just a few chicken nuggets, leftover pizza, etc.

It doesn't take as long to heat up as the oven, so heating bread for dinner goes a lot faster. It doesn't make the house as hot either.

your opening sentence gave me a good laugh. poor mousie.
i've had a toaster for years because it was given to me, it still works and i'm too cheap and lazy to swap it out. but a toaster oven would be helpful, and i'll certainly get around to getting one at some point. turning on the oven to toast bread and cheese or make bagel pizzas is kinda wack.
