I do 20% regardless of the charges of the salon. I have given more when my kids were smaller and had trouble sitting still, cried, etc.

$2 is 10%... and typically one tips 10-20%... I'm really not sure... good question...knowing me I probably would have done $3 to make it an even $20 and at least 15% but if she only spent 5 minutes, I think $2 is fine.

I would have given $2 for a 5 minute haircut. I used to pay that price and gave $2 or $3 tip, depending on how well my child sat, if he was crying, etc. I now pay $10 for a haircut and still pay $2 tip. I feel bad giving less than $2 as I feel cheap, but that is 20% which I feel is excessive for a kids cut.

I take my kids to Great Clips or Supercuts. Coupons come in the mail. It usually costs about $9. I tip another 2 or 3. $16.95 seems like alot of money to trim a little one's hair. I think your $2 was fine. She didn't do anything!

My sister is a hairdresser, and i know sometime she gets excessive tips from people and then sometimes people DONT tip. Tipping has become such a norm in our society, we start to question if it's enough. i mean... do i really HAVE to tip my mailman during the holidays? I start thinking gee... maybe i'd get my mail in better condition if i did tip him/her. we can really make ourselves crazy with this subject, so I tend to over-tip. at restaurants I give a minimum 20% tip... bars, i tip a buck each drink, when i have to go to the bar for it - i tip the waitress 2 bucks a drink if she brought me my drinks in a timely manner - if it took her 20 minutes, then i struggle and it's usually not a big tip. a buck or two maybe.
and i know airport curb side check in can get out of hand with the tipping... i give about 5 bucks a bag - and i actually got a nasty response once from one of the guys, implying it wasn't enough! c'mon... they are raking in the cash at 5$ a bag considering how many bags they handle!
anyway, back to haircuts - if it's just a trim, i would have probably given her the difference between the cost and 20 bucks, just to make it an even amount on my part. but i think you can drop the guilt... some people don't tip at all...
sorry i went off subject there :)

I used to be a stylist so I will put my two cents in here!
If a stylist only spent 5 mins on your daughters hair I would say she was very lucky to get even $2. 5 mins doesnt even give you time to have a proper consultation.
There really is no set amount to tip. I will say though that when a child is screaming and fighting the whole way and it does happen- a larger tip is appropriate for the Excederin we will have to go buy! lol A lot of stylist get paid minimum wage and commision and tips is where they make money so they will work faster for that reason. So if you changed the hair style to something that took a long time to do then a little more if you want.
When I go and get my hair done now, I base my tip on the service- same as a restaurant. Did the stylist listen to me, did they take their time to explain things like how to style it when I get home (when I try new styles) etc...
So anyhow, do NOT feel guilty at all!
Blessings to you and yours!

Don't feel bad, $16.95 is a lot for kids hair cut. I would try to find some place cheaper.
