My son has thrush and has medicine. We are suppose to give him 3ml 4 times a day but to swap his mouth. Any suggestions on the best way to do this?

What can I do next?

My newborn daughter had it but we got rid of it rather quickly with the prescription meds. I would use a q-tip to swab her cheeks which was affected the most. I also would rotate swabbing and just using the dropper by putting half the medicine in one side of her mouth then the other. I even used a warm clean wet washcloth and wiped her mouth sometimes right before giving the medicine. Also, I soaked her pacifiers and bottle nipples in hot water after each use to stop it from reappearing. Good Luck!

Grabbed this item from the Mayo Clinic website...just for future reference or for any other mothers that want to be better informed on prevention and treatment of yeast related infections. Just means things are out of balance and it can in most cases be rather easily restored.

I use acidophilus (available at any health food store).

Treatments and drugs
By Mayo Clinic staff
The goal of any oral thrush treatment is to stop the rapid spread of the fungus, but the best approach may depend on your age and the cause of the infection.

Treating oral thrush in children
Toddlers with mild oral thrush who are otherwise healthy may need no treatment at all. If the infection develops after a course of antibiotics, your doctor may suggest adding unsweetened yogurt to your child's diet to help restore the natural balance of bacteria. Infants or older children with persistent thrush may need an antifungal medication.

Treating oral thrush in infants and nursing mothers
If you're breast-feeding an infant who has oral thrush, you and your baby will do best if you're both treated. Otherwise, you're likely to pass the infection back and forth. Your doctor may prescribe a mild antifungal medication for your baby and an antifungal cream for your breasts. If your baby uses a pacifier or feeds from a bottle, wash and rinse nipples and pacifiers in a mixture of equal parts of white vinegar and water every day until the thrush clears up.

Treating oral thrush in healthy adults
If you're a healthy adult with oral thrush, you may be able to control the infection by eating unsweetened yogurt or taking acidophilus capsules or liquid. Acidophilus is available in natural food stores and many drugstores. Some brands need to be refrigerated to maintain their potency. Yogurt and acidophilus don't destroy the fungus, but they can help restore the normal bacterial flora in your body. If this isn't effective, your doctor may prescribe an antifungal medication.

HI S.! I agree with the previous poster. Do not use a q-tip. If your baby moved suddenly a q-tip could puncture his palate. Using your finger with an infant washcloth (they are nice and thin) is a very good method!

My son, when he was a newborn, got thrush twice! Go to the drug store and buy some gingin violet. Take a long q-tip and swab all around his mouth for about 30 seconds to a minute. It turns his mouth a horrible purple for a couple of day but it's worth it! Also, put anti-fungal creme on you nipples after each feed (it won't bother him when he feeds...I promise). Try to get sunlight on your nipples...I know it sounds impossible but try it if you can...and expose them to the air as much as possible! If this doesn't work, you can get a real cheap rx to take orally and that will cure it for you (I recommend taking the rx WHILE treating your son...it helps to stop the yeast from getting passed back and forth) Hope this helps!

when i had to do it i used a syringe that they gave me at the pharmacy and put it down the inside of his cheek on each side then squirt the rest down the middle. it went away so i must have got it good enough! my boys both had it at once when they were little.

I agree with the q-tip method. With us, I put the med in a measuring spoon, dunked the q-tip in the spoon, then inside the mouth.

Extra advice: if he has it and is breastfeeding, start treating yourself as well. You can put it on your nipple about 10 minutes before he eats, doing double duty. I would put the nystatin on my nipple then cover it with a cotton breastpad to keep my bra from staining. Also be cognizant of the processed sugars/ yeast-y foods that you eat, since thrush is yeast and yeast feeds on sugar. I know, I've been batteling thrush between me and my DD since January. Good luck!

When my now 8 year old daughter was born she had thrush. We always took a clean washcloth and put the medicine on it, a Q-tip could hurt the infant, but with your finger in a washcloth u are actually touching all over her mouth, not a sharp stick with a bit of cotton that could poke them.

Ok--this is going to sound very odd but my son had thrush and the pharmastist told us that the best remedy for this is dirt. I do not want to encourage eating dirt nor would I serve this to my son for dinner but he said it is a natural cleaner of the mouth. He said that is the best thing for thrush. My son did not do well with the meds and we did not give him dirt. I would suggest the siringe method also.
