My baby treated for thrush a few weeks ago.
her mouth cleared up right away but after she was better my nipples started to bug me.
have continued to treat my nipples with same medication as baby, but they remain kinda itchy and sorta burn.
she is still showing no signs of it comming back even though i no longer give her the medicine.
if my nipples still had it, wouldn't she have it again too?

What can I do next?

My daughter had thrush and I got it in my nipple. Ugh, that sucked. I ended up needing a prescription that is taken orally to knock it out, while I was treating her mouth. I went to a dermatologist that gave me a Rx, after my daughter was diagnosed.

Also make sure anything else she sucks on is sterilized -- pacifiers, nipples from bottles. Sterilize it over and over.

We just went through this. Two rounds of Nystatin and we both still had it--you give it back and forth. Our pediatrician put us both on Diflucan/Fluconazole (sp?) and wha la! Gone immediately and no coming back...

HI Katrina,

Thrush (yeast) is fed and lives by sugar. It's possible she gave it to you but because she got rid of hers it has to rebuild in her system for her to show symptoms again. If you see yeast outwardly (thrush on the tongue, vaginal area, or nipples) then your body is eaten up with it. Get rid of the sugars in your diet and that will help tremendously. A good probiotic/prebiotic like Florify will help as well. Tanalbit by Intensive Nutrition is an excellent product and will rid it quickly from your system (approx. three months) Check and make sure it is okay to take while breastfeeding. Yogurt at this stage will not help. It is primarily for maintenance.

Hope I helped!

prehaps the med. your putting on your nipples is preventing her from getting it again ????

she will get it again... sometimes it just takes time.. try gentian violet on your nipples.. and you can use a little in her mouth at night.. talk to the pharmacist.. it really works great.. but it stains easily so be careful...my son kept getting it for about 4 months.. on and off.. it's a pain...

This is very interesting because my son had thrush at 15 months for about a week before I took him to the doctor (I thought it was a canker sore). I was nursing him all this time and I never got thrush anywhere. The day the doctor diagnosed it was thrush, the night before was our last nursing session. I never ended up getting thrush. My sons cleared up in about two weeks. I constantly sterilized everything, even after his mouth cleared up for probably about a month after.

Maybe you could check with the pediatrician to see if it's okay for your daughter to take the nystatin as a preventative? I remember my doctor saying it's not absorbed into the body so it's safe. Or, you could start her on probiotics to balance out her bodies' natural flora.

Good luck.

My son had this as a baby. What I do remember of it was that the medicine he took was different than the one I put on my nipples. Maybe that's the problem. Also not sure about the healing time but my guess would be that since your using some sort of medicine it's keeping the cross contamination from occuring again. I do remember that my medicine was a cream and my sons was an awful tasting liquid that w/a dropper was squeezed in his mouth and you tried to coat the white areas. Not fun! Hope it clears up, definitely an uncomfortable situation. Oh and the cream didn't hurt at all.
