Thrush - Sun City, AZ

Hello,

I am looking for any information that anyone may have on thrush. My 6 month old baby just developed a case of it a couple of days ago. I got some Nystatin for him, but say on some websites that it does not work. Has anyone had any experience with this, and do you have any additional information on how to help get rid of this, and prevent it in the future?

What can I do next?

I don't know if you're breast feeding or not, but a lactation consultant recommended Grapefruit Seed Extract - about 5 drops in something like Orange Juice (it tastes terrible). It works REALLY well.

Hi! Thrush is very common...The nystatin usually does work, but, you might want to try and running a damp corner of a wash clothe over his tongue and around the inside of his cheeks and palate after he eats. Babies can't brush yet, so any help in oral hygiene usually is good for them.

I would recommend Gentian Violet. Call your pharmacist and see if they have it, if not, they can check around. You don't need a prescription for it. It's amazing stuff. I used it when my daughter had thrush at a month old. I was nursing and it had infected my breasts as well. Within one feeding I could already feel relief.

My daughter had thrush a few months ago from all of the antibiotics that she was on. They prescribed her the oral nystatin and it worked fine for her. It was gone within 3-4 days. To prevent it her doctor told me to boil all of the nipples to her bottles and throw away her binkies and get new ones. hope this helps!!

My daughter had thrush at just a few months old. The nystatin worked for her. I imagine there are cases where it doesn't work, as there is with any sort of medicine. Best thing I can suggest is try it and if it doesn't work then try something else. Good luck and God bless.

My son got this while I was bf and it took forever to clear up. It took three refills of Nystatin, daily yogurt, and monistat on my nipples (washed with soap and water before nursing). The only thing we could figure out was that he picked it up from a shopping cart since he wasn't in daycare and was never around other kids. You also need to constantly sterilize everything he puts in his mouth: toys, bottles, pacifiers, etc.

Hi A. -

Thrush is a yeast infection. If you are looking for a natural remedy, try a throat spray with Osha root or making a tea with an herbal blend for Candida. Most herbs are safe for children. If you get a tea blend, check the ingredients with an herbalist for dosage for your child. If you are in Payson, the herbs are available at Chakra Botanika on Hwy. 260 in the Basha's shopping center, next to Subway. They are open Monday-Saturday - 9am-5pm.

Hi A., my daughter had it when she was 2 months old (she is 5 1/2 now) and I gave her Nystatin, and it did clear her mouth, but I did not do it 4 times a day, like the dr. told me, some times 3 times and some days 4 times, and of course after almost 3 weeks it came back, the 2nd time I did everything the dr. told me, without missing anything and it work out great, I was breastfeeding her so I had to apply some Nystatin around the nipple area, and she has been ok since then.
hope this help!

Check out kellymom.com They have a ton of information and that's what I referred to when my daughter had it. We ended up using the Nystatin and it worked fine for us but giving it on the time schedule they tell you to is a pain. She had a very mild case that just seemed to linger and that's why we finally gave her the Rx.

A., I teach natural remedies for newborns and thrush/yeast infections are one of the things we cover.
1. You can use plain yogurt using a q tip after every feed apply it to the affected area. If you are breastfeeding you must treat yourself also
2. OR You can use 1 tsp. baking soda to a cup of water. Use the same as the yogurt.
3. You must sterilize bottles, nipples etc until the thrush is gone. It is very contagious.
4. Lactobacillus bifidus is an acidophilus like culture specially for babies. Give 1/4 t. with feeding. You can get it in the health food store and it fights thrush, yeast infections and will keep them from coming back.
5. If the thrush/yeast spreads to the diaper area you can use any of the above (yogurt or baking soda) for the rash.
6. Be sure to wash your hands after touching the baby's mouth or the area of thrush/yeast so you do not reinfect.
7. Gentian Violet can be very effective but it also stains and has been known to cause allergic reactions.
Good luck

A.,
when my kids got it, I gave them baby acid dolphilis. You can get it at Wholefoods or Sprouts.
It helped with their digestion too.
As I remember it will take several dosages.

My daughter was born 3 months early and when we left the NICU 3months later she got thrush and I had to pump milk cause it was to hard to treat her and me and still breast feed however the medicine I was given for her always cleared it up. She did get a couple of times cause the first time I tried to treat us both so I could still breast feed. I had to just pump alot. My experience the medicine her doc gave me for her worked. good luck

Hi. I went to the pediatrician as soon as my baby developed Thrush the first time, and he gave us a liquid medication to rub on his Thrush spots as well my nipples. It worked really well because it eliminated it right away. You might want to make an appointment with your pediatrician asap to get some medication. Also, make sure that you are keeping your nipples and your baby's mouth clean before and after each feeding. Good luck and congrats on your baby boy! I have a 6 month old baby boy too. So much fun!

My two mo old is going through the same thing right now. A few women at church told me to try Gentian Violet, you can get it at the pharmacy without a perscription. They say to be very careful with it because it stains anything it gets on. Just take a q-tip and swab the inside of their mouth and it should clear up within a couple of days. Good Luck!

My son had thrush and I'm nursing so he gave it to me also. He was give Nystatin by his dr. I was told to give him a little before every feeding. Also you need to boil everything! It isn't hard to get rid of but it can come back easily. Also if you break open a acidopholis pill and give him s tiny bit it helps and doesn't hurt. Good luck.
