The Princess Bride

This is one of my favorite movies / books. I have been telling from memory the story to my daughter 4 1/2 and she loves it.

I am trying my darndest to remember if there is anything not age appropriate in the movie, but can't really come up with anything.

She has a good grasp of real and made up when it comes to moveis / tv etc. so most things can be explained to her in advance where there might be a problem...

Can any of you think of any scene or topic that might cause a problem?

Thanks!!

What can I do next?

She's a little young. I think I was 8 or 9 when this came out and we saw it in the theater, but my younger sister (5) did not go. I think it's PG, so maybe hold off another few years.

This is also my husband's favorite movie. We went as Wesley and Buttercup to a Halloween party a few years ago!

My entire family LOVES this movie :) We've been watching it since my kids were very little ... I think my oldest saw it the first time when he was about 2.

We never had issues with the kids watching it and being scared. I think because it IS set as a fairy tale and it's made very clear that it's a "story" being told.

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie and we watch it ALL the time ... STILL. And my youngest is 14 LOL

R.O.U.S. might get her. I don't know. I don't know your daughter. My kids have been watching the Princess Bride since - oh Lord - 3. They can quote the movie.

"There's a shortage of perfect breasts in this world. Twould be a shame to damage yours."

And the fights, the torture, the Inigo killing the count, mentioning suicide.

I love the movie, too, but I think I'm waiting til DD is older.

My daughter loves the movie and the book -- but was nearly 11 when exposed to both. I don't really think it's for kids as young as yours. The book has a lot of digressions about William Goldman's work in Hollywood, his personal life, etc., which are a ton of fun for adults and older kids but you would need to skip them for a younger kid; they'd bore her. The movie is probably OK for a younger kid EXCEPT for the torture scene, but why not wait until she's a little older and really can get the humor? I'm in favor of keeping things very age-appropriate and not rushing things. She will love it as much at 9 or 10 as she would now, and would "get" that it's a parody of other stories in ways she won't get at her age now.

Hmmm....
fighting.
torture.
forced marriage (due to her apathy and disappointment, she consents, because her life is on hold waiting for her 'one true love'... whom she thinks is dead....very strange message.)

Could I suggest that you read William Goldman's actual "Princess Bride" book to her, and see her responses? We own and completely enjoy the movie, however, our five year old son won't be seeing it for quite a while!

There is violence and some inappropriate language (words you might well not want your daughter to say). It's tame in comparison with some other movies, but still...

Have you thought of getting the book and reading it to your daughter? Books are much easier to "edit" - when you're reading it out loud - than movies are.

Wesley fighting with the ROUS's and the two scenes where he is being tortured would be scenes I'd be cautious showing a young child. They are still disturbing to my older children. (Not the creatures themselves, but specifically when Wesley stabs the last one repeatedly; actually I don't care for that either.) Another one that we tend to mute/fast forward is the sword fight between Inigo and the six-fingered man because we don't have any desire to hear our children repeating "son of a B****". Otherwise, a great movie with some of the best quotes ever.

I love this movie. The only things I can think of are the giant rats in the forest and the torture scene. Other than that it is a movie that a 4.5 yo will enjoy.

I think there are worse things in kid movies that have been made recently including cartoons.

I think that the shrieking eels and the ROUS's would be scary for a 4 year old. I'm also not so sure about the language about killing people, prepare to die and there are a few swear words in there. The torture scenes probably aren't such a good thing for a 4 year old.

In my opinion she's too young. My kids are almost 7 and 8 and I don't think they are quite ready for it yet. And it 4 1/2 separation anxiety and fear about your safety and theirs when you're away from each other is common as well as an exploding imagination and fear of shadows and "monsters." I'd wait and maybe read the book instead.

Love love love!!! I walked down the aisle to "Storybook Love."
I agree with the scary scenes listed below, and that it depends on your daughter's reaction to scary things in general. I read the book out loud to a 7 year old little girl that I was babysitting one summer. She loved it, and I glossed over some of the more violent images

The only thing that I can think of is Wesley's torture stuff, screaming eels, and the RAUS's. Otherwise, nothing major. Don't know if they'd be scary, but those are as close to scary as the movie gets.

It's a favorite in our house! We caught a mouse last week, and my 8yo asked if it was a ROUS. It's also the summer reading assignment for our 9th grade son's pre-AP English class. He's so happy!

As for whether or not it's appropriate, you know your daughter. Our boys saw it when they were each about 6 or 7, and they loved it! We still watch it frequently, and my oldest is almost finished reading the book (he loves it, too!).

Our daughter understood that movies and many books are make beleive from a very young age. I remember yelling at Good Morning America one time when she was 3 and she said "mom, they cannot hear you, it is just TV."

Also if we watched a movie like Princess Bride hen she was young, we would ask her, "is this real life?" she would tell us "no, this is like a made up story. "

You know your own child best, but never underestimate them.

My 4 year old and 7 year old love that movie. They do say S.O.B. once, but it went right over my kids heads.
There is also that scene in the water with the giant eels. That might frighten some kids. Didn't bother mine, but you never know.
I can't think of anything else.
I love The Princess Bride too :)

Love this movie!
I don't think there is anything in there that would be inappropriate, other than the SOB line if it bothers you to have your kid hear swearing.
Now I really want to watch this with my daughter!

My husband watched it with our 5 & 7 year old boys and 3-year old daughter while I was away. It's now their favorite movie. The boys love the sword fighting and my daughter loves the princess. The torture scene at the end is the only questionable one, I'd say. Here's a review by IMBD: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093779/parentalguide

I love this movie, but I would NOT show it to my DD (who is about to turn 4) because there are way too scary parts.

Why don't you find a time to watch it by yourself and then decide if you think she's ready.

Personally I would wait until at least 6, but I'm probably over concerned. I'd also think a lot of it would go over the head of a kid much younger than 6, and she would appreciate it more if you wait.

I think it would probably be ok - Patricia below I think covered all the "bad" stuff - and there is just one bad word in the whole movie, when Inigo (sp?) says "you killed my father, you son of a . . . .". These days it seems like every other word is bad even in many "kid" movies. Wow, I'm with you - I LOVE LOVE LOVE the book and the movie. Haven't read the book in years, I think I will do that. Thanks for the inspiration!

Sword fighting??

I think it depends on your kid. My 4.5 y.o. wouldn't like it, but she is overly sensitive to most movies for kids.

What a great movie!
