The No Nap Baby!

My daughter is just 9 months old. She went from pretty regular naps. Once to twice a day to none at all. I can't handle it. She's fussy and irritable. Won't let me put her down or walk away if I do get her in her walker or involved with a toy. She just got over a viral infection and is teething. But she's been teething this whole time. This will be teeth # 6 and 7. I'm just not sure what to do. Today she woke up around 6 am and just would not take a nap or anything. I JUST got her to sleep at 9 tonight. My fiancee works third shift so I can't let her cry it out. Plus she stands in her crib. Also take into consideration we currently live in an apartment. I even gave her tylenol for her teeth and to help with the relaxing so maybe she would sleep and it didn't even help.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wow.. i just wanted to say thank you for all the responses. Sometimes you just need reassured that things will work out. She did take one nap the very next day. She still fights them pretty good but I'm learning to judge when it is worth fighting over or not. I will try the vanilla that someone suggested. And we have something like baby einstein which my fiancee used today to relax her into falling asleep. Thanks everyone for the responses!

Warm baths and washing hair usually does the trick for mine when they were her age. My kids are now 20,11,10. I would also play with them untill they fall out or reading a book. I hope this helps good luck.

Just a quick note about the vanilla flavoring - if it has alcohol in it, do not use it when your baby has had tylenol. Mixing tylenol and alcohol is very bad for the liver, especially in someone so small. Either use ibuprofen if you have to, or nix the flavoring!

I have 16 month old twins and they went through this twice so far. I heard it is a separation anxiety issue, I also noticed they were both breaking in teeth at this same time and just didnt feel that good. Hope this helps, and dont worry its probably just a phase, just keep reinforcing nap time and eventually it will happen again.

Well my baby is 4 and half months and he takes a long nap in the mornings and then about 3 short ones in the day time. I always no matter what put him in the crib for his nap. (you can use your babies spot). Even if he don't go to sleep he can have the "downtime" he needs to make it through the day. Good luck. I know how ya feel with the no nap baby....

My little boy does that from time to time. He will get to where he doesn't want to nap. I just keep putting him down and we get back to our naps in a few days. With have to keep her somewhat happy so your fiancee can sleep that will be hard. I used bendryl with my children for teething. It also might make her sleepy. (I use the off brand from Wal-mart the name brand never made either of mine sleep) Her gums might be itching while her teeth are coming in. Good luck and maybe she will be napping before long.

Hey J.,
I have a 2 1/2 year old and he went through a phase kind of like that also. He is still doing it here and there. This is what I did and it may not be the right thing to do by some people's standards, but it worked and I'm not insane right now because of it. Kamrin (my son) wouldn't take naps so I would put him in the bed with no lights on and give him a sippy cup and put in a Baby Einstein Movie. The ones with the calming music in them. He would watch for a little bit and then fall asleep. The music in them actually makes me want to go to sleep too usually. Anyways, it worked for me.

J.,

If she was seriously sick, she is having to adjust to NOT being held by you most of the time. I'm sure the teething doesn't help the situation at all. At my local wal mart in the pharmacy section there are "teething tablets" they are located by the vitamins here, not sure there. That is all they are good for : helping with the teething irritation. Look for them and you can give even your 9 month old child 1 tablet without any problem. You are just going to have to try to build up the time where she is left alone. Be beside her or holding her, then the next time take one step back, etc until you can get out of the room without her crying. Good Luck
