The Best Bottle? and How Do I Rid My Milk of the Soapy Taste?

I have 4 1 year old nephews with a 5th on the way. Their mommies bottle choices were:
My sister- playtex drop ins. The darker yellow nipples and the clear ones that are really soft were the best for her son. She desperately wanted to use the Avent ones because she was given a bunch of them, but wasn't able to until her son could self feed with the bottle (he did the straw cup before he self fed with his own morning bottle...)
My husbands sister swears by the Doctor Brown bottles. Those are super pricey, but she liked them because her boys seemed to get ALOT of gas which was ultra painful for them and the bottles help remove air bubbles. Only thing is they have alot of parts and pieces, and you have to keep up on the cleaning aspect of it.
My husbands brother (and his wife) also used the Doctor Brown's bottles, and they didn't say one way or the other how they felt about them from what I remember.
What I can say about the playtex drop ins is that they are really easy upkeep and by far one of the cheaper bottles. You will want to have a few "hard" bottles or mothers milk bags to keep fluids in when out on errands and you might need a bottle, but it can be poured in and served up in about 30 seconds that way, and then you can dispose of the insides when the baby is finished.
I hope that helps. I agree about the whole "too many options" thing. It's like with everything else- there are 100 different kinds of shampoo and I am supposed to get in and out of the store in a timely manner? The same with toilet paper, milk brands, baby food.....

Hello I am a new mom myself with a four month old. He never took to the breast so I have been bottle feeding my pumped breast milk all the way. I have a Playtex VentAire advance bottle. My son never had a problem with gas yet. I think they are great.

With my daughter we tried the Playtex drop-ins, but she hated them! She was always so gassy. So, we switched to Dr. Browns. These bottles are WONDERFUL!! I recommend them to everyone!

As far as the nipples, we just used the regular ones that came with the bottles, I think they were silicone. You might just have to try them and see which your baby prefers.

The soapy taste in your milk is caused from an excess of lipase in your breastmilk. I had it with my son. He didn't mind the taste (unless i added it to his infant cereal). There is a way to scald it before you store it. The following is a link to Kellymom.com that was helpful to me.

I have 5 children, our bottle of choice was the Playtex w/Drop Ins for all of them. We would get the store-brand drop-in refills to save $$, Target had the ones I liked best. I also went with the silicone nipples because I could not stand the rubber smell with the yellow ones. The first child was the one I tried every bottle on the market with, when we found the Playtex, that is all I gave the rest of them and they were all fine. (All nursed as well)

Go for the Dr Browns... all the way. They are great for baby, especially if your baby is gassy.

Target and Walmart both have store brands versions of the Drop-Ins inserts. Targets are better quality and more similar to Playtex. They are at least a few dollars cheaper than name brand drop-ins.

Dr. Browns!! they are expensive but with both my kids we had hardly any burping/gas problems. I cannot tell you enough how I love these bottles!! Great Investment!!

Hey congrats on the new baby!

I would say the latex nipples are more like the breast nipple but the clear ones are so much "cleaner" and dont get that sticky/tacky feeling the brown ones get. My baby girl ONLY took the latex ones in begining but now we use any and she doesn't care.

A big diff in the bottles is the way they vent. I Like the glass bottles, but baby must learn to vent the nipple...meaning let the air into the bottle manually or the nipple sucks down . The self venting ones are nice because the are like the breast, you don't have to worry about venting them.

"Soapy" look is what another response said. Some women's breastmilk when frozen comes out of the freezer with this look. It will NOT hurt baby and most dont mind it, but it sure smells rancid doesn't it? : - ) Mine did the same thing but my baby refused it, so I just learned that I couldn't "get ahead" like I had hoped by using the freezer. I have heard about the scallding thing, but I just couldn't find the time!
