Thanks! Since it's viral fever , his fever shot up again in the night. He is doing well now. There was nothing to worry but as a mom it's impossible not to worry.

What can I do next?

My son had RSV and pneumonia at 1 yr old.
It took 2-3 weeks to get over it and I was on top of making sure he took his meds when he was suppose to.
It can be scary, but keep in touch with the Dr's office and note any changes in symptoms.
Temps do spike sometimes.
It's only when they won't go down again when they are a problem.
When doing nebulizer treatments, it often sounds like it's getting worse when it's getting better.
The medicine makes the mucus thin so it's easier to cough up.
It sounds awful but as long as the gunk comes up, he's getting better.
Try to keep the fluids up - it also helps keep the mucus thin.
Hang in there.

RSV is something you don't have to mess with we almost lost our son two year from RSV. Normal breathing rate for a 22 month old is 20-40 breaths per minute, if it's has than 40 you NEED to take him to the ER right away. If you feel that your doctor is not taking you seriously see someone else, you are the parent you are his voice. Good luck I pray he gets better and you have some peace.

Hi there,
sorry your little guy is so sick! my daughter who is 5 now had rsv and pneumonia, (the dr. said the rsv caused the pneumonia) when she was 2.5yo. it started with a cough that never went away and then her fever was high and she just wasnt right. her ped took one listen to her chest and sent us to the hosp. she had pneumonia and we were in the hosp for 7 days. its a horrible thing, she also had rotovirus when she was 3mo, (all of these were caught in daycares where these viruses run rampant). but the rsv was about a 100x's worse than the rotovirus. just make sure to give lots of fluids and keep nebulizing along with the other meds they prescribed. i felt like my daughter was never going to get better and even when we left the hosp after 7 days i still had to neb for a week, then she got better (took 2 weeks total). she was still coughing after 7 days but her chest was better. my daughter wont eat at all when she is sick and didnt want to drink. she did have an iv, so that helped. gosh, there was so many rsv babies in the hosp at one pt they quarantined us in a lg room with 3 other rsv kids! your son will better, its just takes awhile. i hope he feels better soon!!!!
another tip is make sure when he sleeps to keep head elevated, and i was told to pat her back to break up what was in her chest. with the fever they had fans in the room to assist with cooling her down and only kept her in a t shirt.

In my experience with RSV and the outcomes with it in my family and friends, I would have asked the doc to admit the baby when the fevers started hitting over 103 degrees. It is possible for a fever to shoot up in minutes and I would rather have a nurse and hospital at my elbow helping the baby along to feeling better.

I am saying I would be sitting in the local Children's Hospital right now if your child was in my home. Seriously. I would have been there several days ago. RSV is not a common cold, it is not the flu but more similar to that is risks.

Please, next time that baby has difficulty breathing or the fever goes over 102 please take him to the nearest Children's Hospital ER. I know you trust your pediatrician but they are human and make mistakes. They send kids home with RSV and it doesn't work out.

These are Q's you need to be asking your doctor... because hospitalization is VERY common with RSV, less for the O2 levels and more for the IV drip and fever management. At one point last year the entire med unit and pulmonary unit at Children's Seattle was all but 100% RSV kids ((My kid and 1 other weren't RSV, but the rest were)). The running joke amongst parents and staff for about 2 weeks was "RSV chocolate, anyone?"

GREAT recovery rate (everyone with RSV went home; the survival rate with RSV + Medical care is very very high), and most were only there a week or two at most (some just 2 or 3 days! Luckies!)

I could talk a ton about RSV from our months at childrens... but these are questions you need fielded by your ped/pulmonologist so that they're aware of where you guys are at.

My daughter had it last Feb when she was 2 months old. I was terrified. She was in the hospital for a week and then got better. There really isnt any medicine for it, just clearing of the nose and throat and neb treatments. Do you have nose frieda? That really helps to get the snot out. And i had an electric snot sucker from the hospital which was great. She has been sick many time since then, thanks to her 2 older brothers, but no wheezing. I do take her to the dr just about every time she starts coughing to be sure she isnt getting it again or anything like that. It takes time to get over all that but as long as you are taking him to the dr and keeping an eye on him, i think you'll be fine. If you think its not fine, call your dr. I know its really scarey and so sad to see them sick. I think it was harder on M. than her. I was so so upset, i will sick about it. How could that happen? She never even left the house except for dr appointments. I think she may have got it there! Anyway, i hope your son gets better soon. Did he get the RSV vaccine? I had a 32 weeker also, but he got the vaccine for a couple of years. I think its hard to get approved form insurance though. Feel free to contact M. if you have any questions. Hang in there.
