We just got our very first Boxer puppy a month ago and I am very impressed so far with her behavior and temperment around the kids. (Ages 5 and 2). We did a lot of research and decided to get a Boxer on our own, but I never asked all of you! Tell me your experiences with a Boxer, TIA

What can I do next?

I've never had a boxer myself, but ALL of my experiences with boxers are good ones! Granted, I think I've been knocked over a few times, but it was only because they got too excited and wanted to say hi!

Awwww. We had a boxer. Miss her terribly still 2 years after we lost her. She was a rescue dog so she was definitely neurotic in some ways and drove us nuts at times, but when it came to our son she was an angel. She was unsure when we brought him home, but warmed up fast and would sleep beside his bassinet. We have several friends who never liked dogs until they met her. She thought she was the size of a cat; she'd curl up ungracefully on our laps and cuddle. She didn't shed much. It was hard going for walks with the stroller and her because of that chase instinct they have; she'd see a rabbit and yank against the leash while I was holding the stroller. But I think if we'd had her as a puppy and could have trained her from puppy-hood, we could have had that under better control. We took her to a trainer and he told us that boxers are particularly pack-oriented (if that's the right term) so she needed to know who was boss. She didn't need to be the boss herself, he explained, she just needed to know who was. So if you can establish solid authority and training habits, you should have a good shot at minimizing any negative traits and enjoying the rest. Thanks for bringing sweet memories to me tonight. I think we need to get another boxer :)

My boxer lived till he was 12 years old. Sweetest thing ever. He was sweet with my neice when she was an infant (he was age 2 and 3). And then when my son came along he was just as loving (age 9-12). As long as you don't mind slobbery dog kisses in the face (the dog's face and kids height just seem to match up perfectly), then you should enjoy your dog immensely. They have the energy of a puppy just about their whole lives.

(One fun game I taught my boxer - Hide and Go Seek. I would tell him to "sit, stay . . . stay . . . stay . . . " as I walked out of the room and went to hide in a closet or behind a bed. Then I'd yell from a room "Okay ... COME!" and he'd find me. Man oh man did that dog LOVE it when he found me. They truly are loyal dogs.)

We have had 3 boxers. The first one was given to me as a young, untrained 'teenage' dog. The second was one of her puppies, and the third was a rescue/rehab dog.

The one thing I learned about boxers is that they are HIGH ENERGY!!! Make sure you have adequate toys for them to play with, along with daily walks and playtime.

They are extremely lovable and friendly, and very easily trained. Within a month of having Roxie live with us, she was completely house trained, and knew basic commands. (Sit, stay, lay down, heel) ... but they don't have much common sense. lol. We had my first boxer at the same time as my rescued lab/dalmatian, when we were living on a farm... One day the dogs got into a porcupine. The lab mix discovered very quickly that the quills hurt, and stopped harassing it.The boxer, however, just wouldn't leave it alone. Poor girl had to be taken to the vet, because she had HUNDREDS of quills stuck on her face, and so many in her mouth that she couldn't shut it. :( (The lab only had 6 in his face...)

Boxers are lovable oafs. I love them, one of my favorite family breeds. :)

All I can say is boxers are the most wonderful dogs on the planet! Our boxer is 12 now and seriously the best dog in the world! I will say as a puppy he was a mess (think Marley and Me!) but as soon as he turned 3 I couldn't ask for anything better! Mine is very attached to me and he doesn't like to be alone, but honestly I don't want another kind of dog. So good with the kids and loves people! I say you made a great choice!

Love, love, love! Our first boxer was a brindle and lived to be 8 years old before getting cancer. He was our first baby and was awesome when had our girls. Protective, never mean. They are strong dogs but act like puppies! Our second boxer is a fawn and is 4 years old. He is a cuddler (sp?) and thinks he is a lap dog and is very photogenic, ha ha! I put him on FB too much! He does not like it when the girls are not home. I really thinks he misses them. Every now and then he chews something he shouldn't but he is a great dog. I love the breed and will probably always have boxers. Congrats on the new puppy!

i have a yellow lab but i love boxers.. my cousins just lost their boxer at age 11 .. he was the sweetest dog on the face of the planet, he was amazing with her young neices ive never once heard him growl at anyone for any reason.. my neighbor that lives up the street also has a boxer, id say hes about 5 and they also have an almost 2 year old and he is great with her, very tolerant.. now my dog is not a fan of other dogs.. except for my cousins dog and my neighbors dog, both boxers! any time anyone else has ever brought their dog to my house my dog wants nothing to do with it, gets very irrtated when they go near him, sometimes growls (hes even snapped at my neighbors pitbull once or twice- thankfully shes a very sweet dog and just runs away), dumps over his waterbowl so they cant drink it but for some reason with both of these dogs he was great.. he even used to let my cousins boxerdrink out of his water bowl at the same time as he was.. and my neighbors dog actually has a tendency to get out of his house and he comes right down here to my house to see my dog.. the last time he got out my dad let him in the yard and put my dogs leash on him to bring him back home and my dog grabbed the end of the leash in his mouth and was walking him aroudn the yard it was so funny.. my dad actually got an old leash to put on my dog so he could walk him and my dog walked the boxer up the street to his house it was hilarious
.. my opinion- boxers are awesome

My sister had one (rescued) and my mom has 2 ~ all 3 are amazing dogs! Friendly, easy-going, gentle with the little ones yet protective. My moms dogs are super sweet and love to play with the boys but also love to be up in your lap snuggling.
I had never been around a boxer until my sister got hers and I fell in love with the breed, as did my mom.

We got our first Boxer about a year ago, and he is wonderful. I never knew what great dogs they were. He's energetic, but knows when to calm it down, unlike some breeds. He's alert and aware, but he hardly ever barks unless he thinks it's necessary. He's protective but I've never seen him be aggressive. He is very social, gets along well with all other animals, even much smaller dogs (we have a chihuahua) and cats. He is wonderful with our kids (8 and 5). Our kids could use him as a trampoline and he wouldn't care. He roams the house patrolling at night. I got up to pee last night at midnight and he was sitting up, staring out the window. LOL I feel a lot safer knowing my big boy is looking out for us.

He's pretty gross, he drools a lot and sheds a lot. He's dirty as all get out. He loves to dig in the back yard and he'll chew almost anything. Good thing about his chewing is that he mostly ignores our stuff. He's great at differentiating between his chew toys and our things. He is SUCH a cuddle bug, I swear he thinks he's a 3-pound dog the way he tries to crawl in our laps.

All in all, I've never encountered such a great, loyal, sweet breed. Highly recommended! Enjoy your new addition!

We are on our second boxer. Our first lived until he was 13 and was the BEST dog ever! He was very smart, but did have separation anxiety when he was a puppy. When he was around 1.5 years old he didn't need to be crated anymore and listened very well. He was amazing with our nieces and nephew and then our children when we had them. He slept by my daughter's crib every night to protect her. When he passed away 2 years ago, we immediately know we would get another boxer. We got female this time and she is just as smart. She is a little crazy, just hyper and full of energy. Again, she is amazing with our 2 little ones. If she thinks we are playing too rough she will bark and get between us and the kids to protect them! She is also a very good guard dog, wouldn't hurt a fly but looks vicious! We love boxers and will probably always have one.

When I was a little girl, my grandma lived in the country by herself, and had gotten robbed a couple of times. My uncle gave her his boxer named Duke for protection. She went on and on about how Duke was such a good watchdog. He barked whenever someone came to the house. What she didn't know was that he only did that when she was home. Once we went when she was gone, let ourselves in with our spare key, and Duke was so happy to see us, he just licked our hands and wanted attention. But he made her feel safe, and he was the best dog!
