Teething Remedies

My 6mo old daughter is teething and having such a bad time with it. She uses cold teethers and from time to time I'll give her tylonol...only when she seems super uncomfortable. I wanted to try baby orajel, but the pediatrician said not to. Has anyone ever used it? Or any other suggestions? I feel so bad for her and I just don't know what els to do to help ease her discomfort. :( Any suggestions would really be appreciated. Thanks momees!

What can I do next?

Hi D.!

The orajel tastes terrible and doesn't last very long. Try Hyland's teething tablets along with Motrin. The Motrin helps with inflammation and swelling, where the Tylenol doesn't. This did wonders for all three of my kids.

Here's a link with more info for Hyland's.

D.,

Definitely do not use the Oragel, it will only toughen her gums. Instead, I always used the homeopathic teething tablets, found next to the teethers and oragel, and my son loved them. Also, buy frozen waffles and give them to her with out heating them. They'll soothe her gums, and she'll love the taste (I couldn't buy enough blueberry waffles for my son.) Hope this helps!

My pediatritian said that Orajel can cause babies to choke because it numbs the throat too. So, I've been scared to use it.

I used (adult) orajel when I was in school, and accidentally used too much. I lost feeling of my throat which made it feel like it was closed off and I had the perception that I couldn't breathe. I have never used orajel with my 2 kids (4 and 17 mos). Hylands Teething Tablets worked GREAT for me - and didn't take very long to take effect - like Tylenol. The other thing my kids loved was a vibrating teether I picked up at Walmart or Babies R Us. The top is in a shape of a star, and has different textures on each point. When the child bites down, it starts vibrating. My sister is a speach pathologist, and gave me stomething that the kids like. It has a handle - similar to a tooth brush, and the tip is textured and is soft and chewable. That's easier to get the hard to reach teeth. Good Luck!!!

I use hylands teething drops and they really seem to help. They are all natural too, which is great! You can also use clove oil to rub on their gums. It is very strong, though, and needs to be mixed with a little olive oil. Mix it and try it on you first. It works the same as orajel, but isn't bad for them. There is also a vibrating toothbrush with a teether top from onestepahead.com that my son loves to chew on when his teeth hurt. The other plus side is that it's a toothbrush for when those teeth finally come in. Just a tip... the hylands drops can be put in a spoon with water so they can "drink" them if they don't like having them in their mouth.

Well, here is my advice..keep doing what you are doing with the tylenol and the cold teethers. My daughter is also teething and has been since she was 3 months old (she is 8 months now). I give her baby orajel but only when she is in major pain. I put just a tiny bit on her gums so that her whole mouth doesn't go numb. (and if you try it yourself, you will see how potent it really is!) Another thing i was told to try was put some ice in a washcloth (or even just run one under cold water) and let her chew on it herself. My Grace likes that sometimes. Hope this helps you!

When my son was teething I used Camille teething drops that you can pick up at Sprouts or AZ Health Foods. Also, Frys sells a brand of Homeopathic teething liquid by Gentle Naturals located in the baby aisle. Both of these formulas worked really well for my son. With the Camille I gave my son 3 viles at a time and with the Gentle Natural brand I gave him 2 dropper fulls. Good luck and I hope this info helps.

orajel can be toxic and does not last long enough to offer real comfort.
Try giving her a clean dry washcloth or wet it a little and put it in the freezer to cool/freeze it then give it to her. My daughter who is 8 months and teething got a hold of a clean sock from the laundry basket and loves it! -funny the things that work she also likes HARD items like my older daughters little people zoo animals (my older daughter doesn't like it too much though)
Hope this helps, Good Luck and Happy Teething

I had a HORRIBLE time with baby orajel. I will never use that stuff again. My daughter screamed for over an hour (until she fell asleep) because it numbed not only her gums, but her whole mouth. She couldn't nurse, she was drooling all over the place. And I barely even put any on!
So, the stuff I found is Humphrey's #3, Teething Pellets. They have worked really good, and they are all natural.
Hope this helps!

My son is almost 10 months old and has 4 teeth thus far, with another 4 currently on the way. I have used the Hyland's teething tablets since he started teething at 4 months and they work great. They are homeopathic and you can get them at the health food store. I have used the Baby Orajel on occasion and it works like a charm. You just need to be careful of feeding them or nursing them right after you give it, because their mouth is numb and their gag reflex isn't as strong. Also, once they are over 6 months you can give them Infant Motrin which is helpful because it has an anti-inflammatory which helps with the gum swelling in addition to the pain. Good luck!
