Teething Relief

My 7 month old just cut his two bottom teeth within the same week. He is taking it pretty well but I can tell he's uncomfortable (he's just not a crier). He doesn't like the teething cookies and he runs hot and cold with the cool water filled teethers. Mostly he bites on his Sassy rings and hard things or on a cloth diaper. I hate giving him Tylenol when he's not in pain but just discomfort. Any alternative ideas for offering him some relief? I've heard things like frozen celery but he is picky about flavors...he won't even take a frozen banana in one of those teething feeders.

Thanks for any suggestions!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! I'll pick up some teething tablets today and I'll give much of the other stuff a try.

The teething tablets seem to work pretty well. I haven't had to try the celery or frozen cloth diapers yet. Next time he's fussy I'll give them a shot. Oh, and I'll check with my pediatrician about Children's Motrin. Travis was 10 weeks early so his body is actually a little behind and he's more like a 5 month old. I just want to be sure his kidneys are ready for the assault...LOL!

Thanks ladies!

Tylenol is not an affective pain reliever for teething. After they are 6 months of age they can take ibuprofen, and it is much more affective. It helps with the pain and the inflammation. I think you are doing everything else right, but he may need a little help.

Hi T., since your baby likes to bite on cloth diapers, try wetting a part of it and stick it in the freezer that way the part that was wet will be frozen and he could bite on it for some comfort.

T.,

Hyland Teething tablets worked great for my son when he was cutting his front teeth. You should definitely give them a try.

However, when he started cutting his molars I started using Baby Anbesol (however, very sparingly; a little dab goes a long way.)

Good Luck,
D.

Hi T.,

If your baby is not fussing with cutting his teeth. Allow him to cut his teeth without worrying about it. Every baby doesn't need an adjunct to cutting teeth.

Good luck. D.

Hi have you tried the teething gel by little remedies. I have looked for it in my area but haven't been able to find it. www.diapers.com has it. I have been looking for this because I have 6 month old who is teething and I can't tell if he is in pain or not, but I know his gums are itching. Someone told me to try frozen carrots.

I hated giving medicine too, with my first. I was trying to keep him "pure", so to speak. Just give him the Tylenol and whatever he wants to chew on. I've heard of freezing a washcloth that you dipped the corner of in water or diluted juice.
Good luck-

I know you said he's picky about flavors. I would give the celery a try, but not frozen, celery has natural agent in it that tends to numb the gums. Of course, just watch that he doesn't swallow any big pieces. Other things that helped my kiddos. Putting a spoon (a metal one with the rubber coating on the spoon part) in the refrig and then letting them gum that seemed to help. If he's having trouble falling asleep because of the pain, I would say, giving him some tylenol once every couple of days isn't going to hurt him. Just check and double check the dose based on his weight, before you draw it up and after you draw it up. I can't tell you how many times this helped me from dosing to little and once from dosing too much (I was confusing my daughter's weight with my son's when they were both sick). Anyway.... good luck.

Try Hyland Teething tablets. They are homeopathic. Giant usually carries it. Target also carries it. They keep it behind the desk at the pharmacy. You won't need a prescription but you'll have to ask for it.

You can always try frozen waffles or even pancakes. I've found those work great and it won't harm the kids. I hope this helps.

I use the Baby Orajel (there is a nighttime formula and a daytime formula). It seems to help her and I can definately tell when it starts to work! Also, my daughter has her ducky, which is kind of like her security blanket, only its a stuffed animal. She never liked the teething rings but she will take her ducky and start gnawing on it. oh and baby carrots work too...just pop em in the fridge to get them cold (not the freezer) ...only thing with those is you need to closely monitor...dont want him chopping off a piece of carrot and choking on it.

T.,

I just read an article in Parents magazine about teething. One mom suggested wetting the corner of a washcloth, twisting it, and then freezing it. She said her son LOVED to chew on the frozen corner, but having the rest of the washcloth dry kept his little hands from getting too cold. Good luck!

Have you ever heard of a "teething necklace?" I bought one for my little girl (6 months). It's not for them to chew on but it is a little necklace made of amber beads. I guess the amber is a resin and so when they wear the necklace it gets into their skin. Amber has pain relieving properties so it helps with the discomfort of teething. I don't know if it is working for my little one (I think she is teething but no teeth yet...and she's always happy, so go figure), but I have friends who swear by them. If you google: amber teething necklace, there is tons of places you can purchase them online. They are really reasonable like $13.00 or around there. Hope that this might help you and good luck!

I second the teething tablets. I got mine at Walmart in the vitamin section of all places. Also, if after about 20 minutes if he's still fussy give him some tylenol too. My kids always hated the frozen washcloths or frozen waffles that were suggested to me at the time. The washcloths just made a mess and so did the waffles.

Try putting an ice cube in the teething feeder or giving him a wet washcloth that's been put in the freezer. My daughters loved that.

Sounds like you're doing the right things. The cloth diaper and teething rings are good. You probably want to avoid hard foods because pieces that break off could become a choking hazard.

I am also anti-Tylenol, unless they're running a high fever that warrants it. It is best to just let him gnaw on something safe, and it will pass.

My sister suggested to me for my daughter (now 20 months old) to give her frozen peas. They soften quickly and the coolness soothed her gums. To this day we still give her frozen peas. My husband likes to eat them that way now as a snack. I hope this helps.

A couple of things that others suggested to me for my daughter: frozen plain bagels (mini ones if you can get them because they're easier for baby to hold) and Baby Orajel. Good luck!
