Teething Rash???

My son has had little red bumps (they look like pimples) under his eyes, around his mouth and sometimes on his cheeks for the past month. They are more pronounced after naps and when he is either hot, cold, aggrivated or active.. and sometimes, they are hardly visible. I can not relate it to anything that he eats or drinks, or detergents because I use all free and clear soaps. I am wondering if it is from teething because he is cutting his molars and had been since September.. we're expecting the 4th one to pop through any day now. Has anyone had experience with this? The doctors prescribed an antibiotic ointment, and they really don't know what it is... the ointment does not make a difference.

What can I do next?

HI C. ,

My daughter is 11mnthls old and has had the same kinda rash since 8mnths old , she has 9 teeth , my ped gave me a steroid cream which I use sparingly , however a friend of mine suggested shakelee lotion and at first it was clearing the rash up , but now its back with a vengeance and I have tried changing the detergent, changing her sheets daily and nothing is working . So I know how you feel . My ped has also suggested 1% cortisone . So at her 1yr wellness if she still has this rash , I was going to get the name of a dermatologist to take her to . My concern is she is starting to scratch it and I'm afraid its going to spread or worse get infected . I'm sorry I couldn't give you any advise . I know now that I'm not the only one dealing with this very frustrating issue .

If your son wears carters tagless clothes you should check out this article. It does say that the rash was on their backs but you never know. Hope this helps.

Probably a drool rash. My son uses a paci and drools and gets a rash. I put Aquaphor on it and it goes away. Even if he doesn't use a paci he probably still drools in his sleep.

Did you ever find a solution to your son's rash. My son is 21 mos. and is going through the same thing. He has a rash on his face - little red bumps, similar looking to pimples that are mostly around his mouth, but also under his eyes and on his nose. He is cutting all four eye teeth right now and is drooling. An allergist told me to use Hydrocortisone 1% but it doesn't seem to be working, his first ped. gave us a prescription for Metronidizole but that hasn't worked either. We went to another ped. and he said it was drool rash - the dry/wet cycle that causes it... and suggested Vaseline. My only problem is that it's hard to find something to put on or near his eyes as everything says not to do that. What did you find out? I am desperate to find a solution. The rash looks terrible and I feel it could be getting worse.

I was happy to read your questions because I am curious about the same thing. My son seems to be cutting some molars and has a pimply-like rash on his cheek. He is very fair and has a history of mild excema. I read one of the other responses and may consider changing the detergent that I use because I do sometimes find him sleeping on his tummy. I have been using Dreft since he was born. The doctor has also recommended 1% cortisone cream and it has worked up until recently. I guess that I don't really have any advice, but for me it's a relief to know that someone else is experiencing the same thing.

It could be from teething. But since it is more pronounced after naps, could there be something in his crib other than linens that could be causing it? Like a stuffed animal or a toy or something that could be getting on his face? Is your son very fair-skinned? I went to school with a boy who had red cheeks all the time. It may be the beginning of something like that. If it doesn't go away after his last tooth comes in, I would take him to a dermatologist, because it sounds like your pediatrician doesn't know what it is. I hope your son gets better really soon!

My son had a rash like that for the first few weeks of life. Turns out it was a heat rash. I took corn starch put it in a sock and then gently rubbed it all over his face, neck...anywhere he had the rash. It disappeared that day. I say gently because you don't want your little one to enhale dust.

If your son sleeps on his belly (face in contact with sheets) than it could be an enzyme in your detergent. Do you use any stain removers? For my son, when I finally removed the whitening detergent (HE SA8 from Amway) the rash went away. I had read that the enzymes sometimes cause the irritation for some people.

My son is also 18 months and has all of his teeth except for the 4 canine teeth that are breaking through right now. He is drooling so bad, that his chin is broke out in a rash(red skin and very dry). My pedi told me to use 1% cortisone cream on his face when he is sleeping. It works, and the rash is cleared up when he wakes up until he starts drooling again like a leaky faucet! It sounds like your son may have a little of heat rash as well as a teething rash! Try the cortisone cream to see if that works.
Good luck!
