Teething Not Eating

I have an 8 month old that was eating baby food just fine, then started teething(about 2 weeks ago but no teeth as of yet) and has stopped eating baby food at all. Just turns his head away. He is still nursing all the time but I am worried that he may not be getting enough nutrition. He won't drink juice either.

Doesn't seem to be in pain, but eyes all of my food whenever I am eating and does his best to grab at food.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ok thanks everyone, I feel better now.I will just keep trying the cold food in the feeder. Gave him avocado last night and unless he could pick it up or see that it came from my plate he wouldn't eat it, but he did eat something at least. Will let you know if anything changes and when he finally breaks his first teeth.

Please excuse the lateness of this response, but both of my girls just stopped eating baby food at around ten months. I think they were just sick of it. So, I started doing little bites of regular food... bananas, cooked carrots, etc. There is a great website that will help guide you in this process...

My son just did the same thing. He refused to eat until his teeth came in. He would basically only breastfeed and maybe eat a half a jar to a full jar of babyfood a day. I was also worried but once all 5 teeth came in he was back to his normal eating habits.

My DD stops eating for 2-3 days every time she starts teething. She also slows down on nursing. After a couple days, she starts eating in gusto! The best thing I have found is to put bananas, slices of avacado, etc. in a mesh feeder and freeze it. She LOVES it! Tastes good, and the cold makes her mouth feel better. It makes ME feel better, because I feel like she is getting that extra little bit. She also likes plain ol' ice cubes in the feeder too.

He is OK with just breastmilk. However, at this age , you can start giving
him table food if he is eyeing your food. My 9 1/2 month old grandson
eats anything and everything. Use baby food only when in a hurry and he
is not thrilled. Table food only for him.

You could exclusively breastfeed for the first year and baby would get all he or she needs as far as nutrition is concerned - so don't worry about that. Call your pediatrician if you are too concerned and to obtain some suggestions for pain relief. Ours recommended infant motrin.

His gum may be sore from the teeth trying to push out. Since he is breastfed he is getting all of your nutrients as well. My son, 18 mths, was getting a back tooth and would not eat solid food for 3 days because his mouth was sore. If it continues I would call the pediatrician and talk to a nurse. Hope this helps :)

He gets what he needs from breastmilk so no worries there. Are you giving him Motrin to alleviate the pain?

Breastmilk is much more nutritious than solids and especially juice. Feeding solids before a year of age is more to give kids a feel for the texture and act of eating. Breastmilk is still the primary source of nutrition.
