My poor little boy is getting his eye teeth and it is just killing him. I have purchased some Tylenol (for his fever from the teething), some Orajel and Hyland's Teething tablets...can I use them at the same time? Like last night I gave him two teething tablets at 7:30pm, then some Tylenol at 12:45am, then some Orajel at 1:20am (and then we were up until 4:15am!!) I guess my question really is if I can use Tylenol and Orajel at the same time? I haven't decided if the Hyland's tablets really work or not.

What do you do to relive nighttime tooth pain?

Thank You!
N.

So What Happened?

Thank you all!! I got some Motrin and it seems to work better than the Tylenol. It is interesting that some of your little ones don't like the Orajel...Lucas asks for it! It really seems to help but does not last long. I am hoping these teeth come through soon so we can get some more sleep!

We found that Ibuprofen was the biggest help, although the eye teeth and molars where basically just miserable. We also tried alternating Iboprofen with Tylenol, but it was pretty obvious which helped better. I know many people who swore by the Hyland Tablets, but no matter how we gave them, they did nothing for our son. I would advise against the Orajel unless you REALLY are certain it is helping. Our doctor told us she did not recommend using it. That one of the ingredients can alter your child's heart rate. Since it did not help our son, and WAY ticked him off, I threw it away.

During the day, distraction was our best medicine. Keeping him busy and entertained. It's exhausting, but at least at 16 months there ARE lots of fun things to do. You could prehaps use Tylenol during the day as well. Then at night and nap times we would give the Ibuprofen, with some food or milk to try to help prevent any tummy discomfort. I would give it to him about 20-30 minutes before bed, then if he woke up and it was 6 hours or more later since the first dose. I felt like I was medicating him way too much for quite a while. But the other option was to have him miserable and not sleeping, which was awful. When there seemed to be a little break from the teething, I would stop the meds for a while, until he needed them again. Good luck...you'll get through this, really!

Hi, N.! I loved the Hyland's Teething Tabs; I would just use them regularly with the Tylenol. Or, since he is old enough, try Motrin for infants. That lasts longer at nighttime and it would help with the inflammation.

Our son HATED the orajel; indeed, he still does. The orajel has a really strong taste, and it stings when you put it on. I'd stay away from it. The teething tabs really helped our son fall asleep--it seemed like a miracle! :) I don't remember how much you can use; I think we just followed the directions on the package.

I hope he starts feeling better soon!

God bless!

Ibuprofen works the best. And we use the teething tablets and they work great for us. But we give her three tablets with the ibuprofen. Tylenol just didn't seem to be strong enough. And make sure he has something in his tummy when you give him the ibuprofen.

Alternate Motrin and Tylenol at nighttime. It really works- give him Motrin at bedtime, then 6-8 hours later give him Tylenol. I've never heard of the teething tablets, but I swore by the motrin-tylenol switch with both of my kids. The motrin will work for most of the night, then when he finally wakes up give him the Tylenol. That will work for the rest of the night. If you need to, put on some orajel at the same time. A friend of mine did this with her 3 kids, then told me about it and I used it with my 2. Good luck!

Hi there,

I feel your pain. We are going through the same thing with our 9 month old son.

I swear by Hyland's Teething Tablets, but there are 2 tips I have for you. One is just to keep giving them to him every 2 hours while he is awake--don't wait until he is in pain. The other tip is don't give him anything to eat or drink a few minutes before or after giving him the Teething Tablets. This lets his mouth properly absorb the tablets.

My son screams with Orajel, so I can't help you there. When it's been really bad, we have given our son Teething Tablets & Tylenol at the same time, with no ill effects. Something to keep in mind with Tylenol is to check with your healthcare provider to see the maximum amount your child can have. As children gain weight, they can have more Tylenol, so if it's been awhile since you were told how much you can safely give your child, it might be worth a call to your doctor. The dosage that worked 6 months ago may not be touching the pain now.

Good luck!

I just looked up Hyland's Teething tablets because I had never heard of them here is one ingredient that might be keeping your baby up at night:
Coffea Cruda 3X HPUS - for wakefulness and diuresis

Since neither the tablets or orajel contain acetaminophen (Tyleonl) you can give either simultaniously with Tylenol. You can repeat Tylenol as often as every 4 hours. For extra pain relief you can try ibuprofen (Motrin). Ibuprofen is a favorite in the medical industry for relieving pain and inflammation. Ibuprofen can be given as often as every 6 hours.
