Teething Help! - Plano,TX
My son is 8 months old. After weeks of no teeth we now have 2 pushing through at the same time and another that I feel under the gums. He has been great through this whole thing except for this week he has stopped taking bottles. This is a boy that had to suck 6 ounce bottles dry a month ago but now is only taking 3 ounces max! He does not seem hungry otherwise and is taking his spoon feedings well. Any one with any advice on easing his comfort would be greatly appreciated! Oh, he HATES oragel!!!

Give him Motrin...I waited as long as I could to give this to my daughter, but it was a saving grace once we tried it. She was able to rest and it reduces swelling to allow the teeth to push through. Hope he feels better soon.

have you tried motrin? I think that helps much better than tylenol or oragel. He is old enough now that he can have some motrin....i would call his pediatritian for dosing. Also, is he congested or have a runny nose? How is he sleeping...I'm asking because he might have an ear infection that can be caused by increased saliva, running nose, etc. That may be the reason he won't eat also! Just some thoughts!! My son never would take a teething ring but some of my friends have sworn by them! Good luck!

Hi, When my son was teething, he didn't want his bottle either...but we would let him chew on frozen eggo waffles, and that helped him a LOT. We also were able to find ONE kind of teether that you could put in the freezer, and it was one that had a handle on it, and then a purple triangle thing on the other end filled with liquid that was freezable. Most aren't freezable because the edges can get hard while freezing and then cut the baby's gums, and possible break at those frozen seams, releasing the liquid inside, but the one I mentioned is freezer safe.
Good luck,

Hi A.,
I wouldn't worry about him not eating. The good thing about the teething is that the pain doesn't last for very long - it seems to come and go. He'll start eating and drinking when he's ready. You can also just give him a dose of Tylenol or Motrin about 1/2 an hour before his bottle should be. That will help dull the pain enough that he'll eat if he wants to. I didn't have any luck with either teething rings or other objects or the Orajel. Only the medicine worked.

Oh...I'm sorry! Teething just sucks for everyone. Teething tablets worked wonders for my little girl. Some nights we have to do a combo package - infant Tylenol and teething tablets. The brand of tablets doesn't matter - the content is all the same.
As for eating, have you tried chilling the bottle? My girl loved having her bottle heated until she started teething. At that point, she wouldn't eat because the heat from the formula irritated her little gums. You'll probably find that your little one will eat more if the food is chilled (the cold helps numb the gums).
Good luck!

When my son was teething, I got the best advice from an AT&T operater. hehe. Anyway if you go to Walmart Pharmacy and ask them to order Hurricane Gel ($5.00 for a jar) it is what dentists use to numb your gums before shots. One jar will not only last throughout teething. It doesn't go down their throats causing them to choke and instantly numbs the area. Will give you much relief and comes in variety of flavors. One jar lasted through my son's molars. It was the best thing I ever found, but you do have to have the pharmacist order it, does not need prescription to get. Hope this helps you, after going through colic with son this was a blessing to find.

Hylands Teething tablets work great for our son when Tylenol and Oragel won't.

Hi A., My little one did something similar when he was teething. He used to nurse for a good while the all of a sudden he was on and right back off. Pediatrician reminded me he won't starve himself, and he didn't forget how to do it but it may hurt him to do it now with the teeth coming in. (his jaw may hurt and trying to make sucking motions only hurts more) Spoon food, cereal/jar stuff, is easier b/c he only has to swallow and not a lot of work involved. He told me not to make a big deal out of it or he may feel like I'm forcing him and he may fight me more. Just let him do what he wants and keep offering what you normally do. My boy didn't like Orajel either, not a lot helped him except chewing on stuff. Mine came around eventually so I guess he was right. Hope that helps or at least let's you know you aren't alone!

My daughter is 3 months and got her first tooth two weeks ago. She was very fussy and I soothed her by rubbing her gums with my finger. I'm sure that you have probably tried this, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway.
