My 5 1/2 month old has just cut his 2 bottom teeth and he is in extreme pain! I give him motrin every 6 hours and orajel every 4 but he still seems to be in extreme discomfort. My daughter didn't have this kind of pain. He is not napping very much and screams unless I am holding him. I am here to comfort him but I cannot hold him all day. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Hylands teething tablets are awesome. Orajel sucks. Give him teething tablets and alternate tylenol and ibuprophen

TEETHING TABLETS!!!!! They're all natural and work brilliantly. It's instant and amazing! Good luck. :)

(Also, let him gnaw on cold cuts like carrots. They will massage the gum & help break the tooth through faster. Let him suck on a cold wash cloth... same thing)

We had been very happy users of Hylands Teething Tabs in combination with Motrin with great results until the recent Hylands voluntary recall. Of course our daughter is right in the middle of cutting her molars & in lots of pain. We have since switched to Boiron Teething Relief which is homeopathic as well. I would highly recommend! No pain all night long & had her best night sleep so far after giving the Boiron.

More info here:

It can be purchased at any Natural Food Store in your area. Maybe even your local pharmacy.

Good Luck!

You could try putting him down with a water bottle, maybe that would sooth him as if you were holding him.

Freezey pops!! There's a reason they give newborns sugar water in the nursery at the hospital when they're getting shots/circumsicions. Freezey pops are nothing but frozen sugar water. The glucose boosts endorphines to help manage pain, and it's nice and cold :) Buy those pacifier thingys with the mesh netting on the end so baby doesn't choke. My 10 month old was an early teether, had 8 teeth by 5 months, and now he's getting 4 molars all at once, so I feel your pain! Freezey pops and tylenol :)

I agree with Denise, plus teething toys kept in the fridge (not freezer) helps our 7 month old. He also gets Tylenol and Oragel as needed. Remember, this too shall pass (it's my mantra this year!!!)!!!

You can cycle tylenol with the ibuprofen so that the relief never wears off. Ask your doc first, since baby is young. Give tylenol every four, and ibuprofen every 6 hours. My docs had a handout that showed you which to give first and the intervals so that you would space it correctly. I could never remember how to do it right w/o that handout. Good luck.

When my 2 little ones were teething and felt pain I would take an ice cube wrapped tightly in a washcloth and secured with a rubberband. The ice numbed the area and took away a lot of the pain.

Take a bunch of baby washcloths, wet them, fold them, put them in a Ziplock bag in the freezer. He will LOVE gnawing on them! Poor little guy...hope he's better soon!

They sell these mesh things that you can put ice or fruit in. The baby can gum them. My daughter loved this when she was teething! Have you tried some teething tablets too?
