Teething Baby Wont Eat!

My daughter is now 6 1/2 months old. She has one tooth that is halfway up and another two starting to surface. Here's the problem, she isn't cranky she still sleeps 8-12 hours in a row at night...but she won't eat. My doctor wants her to be getting 24 ounces of formula in a 24 hour peroid...however, most days she is only getting maybe 15. Before she started teething she was eating 5 ounce bottles 4-5 times a day and eating lots and lots of solids...I couldn't feed her fast enough! Now she will only take about 2 ounces at a time...and no solids. She is getting constipated from not getting enough fluids in. I have tried giving her APAP (tylonal) q4hrs to see if maybe she was in pain and thats why she hasn't taken the bottle much but that hasn't helped. Any ideas anyone has for getting her to start eating a little more again would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

The doctor has me mixing her formula twice as strong (double the scoops) to increase her caloric intake. We are going in for monthly weights to monitor her weight gain. Thanks to everyone who gave suggestions. I am going to get some of those teething tablets you all speak of and see if they help!

If she isn't cranky while she is teething then that might not be the problem. Especially if you've already tried tylenol and that didn't seem to do anything. I would take a little sugar and dip the nipple in it then give to her, only do this a couple of times ( You don't want to get her thinking she gets it all the time). But this might incourage her to eat more. But most children do go through a phase of slowing down with eating and this just might be her time. She isn't going to starve herself, kids just eat when they want to eat. Just take is slow and if you think that she still isn't eating enough ask your doctor about it. As long as she is healthy then you shouldn't have too much to worrie about.

Try teething tablets. They are all natural and can be found at Safeway or probably just about anywhere. As for her not eating Try teething bisquits for her to suck on. Good luck!

Honestly the teething tablets have worked better for us than the tylenol. Does she use a sippy cup? With my now 7 1/2 month old I give her a sippy cup with water and she will take that before the bottle. I know how frustrated you are I went through this about a month ago (I even posted), but she will eat when she is hungry. She will not let herself go hungry. It usually lasts for a few days maybe a week and then gets better for a little bit and starts all over again. My ped said not to worry unless the lack of eating continues for more than a few weeks. 15 oz a day really isn't that bad if she is getting a lot of solids too, just push some water! Good luck!

My son was the same way. He would only eat 3 oz every 3-4 hours. He too was a good sleeper but a poor eater. Our doctor told us the same thing about taking 24 oz in 24 hours. He also had some constipation issues for a few months, but I started adding in some juice & water to his diet and he was fine. He is 3 1/2 now and I have learned that you can't force kids to eat, they will eat when they are hungry.

I have had both of my boys suck on a lemon while they were teething. It help with getting the tooth to come out and though they make the weirdest faces they are getting them to come in. As for the eating thing they will go in a phase that they don't want to eat. As long as she talking in a little try not to worry to much. She'll let you know when shes hungry again.

I agree with Heather, babies go thru phases where they grow and eat non-stop and then eat hardly anything at all. The main thing to remember is as long as she is staying on her curve, then she is doing fine. Worried about constipation, then try pedialite or some juice. Maybe even some prunes with a meal. For my daughter who is 2 yrs old, she was always constipated as a baby from birth. I found warm baths frequently, prunes (a half of jar with each meal) and juice really helped. Good Luck!

You could try rubbing baby ambesol on her gums.
