Teething Baby Not Sleeping!!

My daughter got through her first 8 teeth pretty good. Now she's getting her molars and is having a terrible time. She's only sleeping every other night. My husband and I have been taking shifts on the nights she doesn't sleep well so we can at least get a few hours sleep. She cries and whimpers and thrashes back and forth. Orajel and Tylenol don't do anything. We both have full time jobs and have been working overtime, so we're beyond tired. Any advice?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Well, I tried the teething tablets last night with Motrin. It helped some. She was still a bit fussy going down, but she slept until 3:30 in the morning! That's progress. I think one of the main problems is that instead of drooling, she swallows all of the saliva and then starts choking on it and coughing. That wakes her up and then she realizes she's in pain. We're going to continue trying to use the tablets and the Motrin and hopfully she'll continue doing better. Thank you all so much for the advice!!!

Hi B.,
It sounds like that little angel needs a retired grandma with a rocking chair and a real good finger to chew on. Sometimes a warm body and soothing finger to chew helps a lot. I can still remember when my kids were teething. This is a great time to call Grandma. The best of luck to you and remember"this too shall pass".

Hello, it has been a while since I had teething children, all my kids teeth are falling out now!! however I did have 1 child that had a rough time teething and my peditrician gave me a perscription strength numbing gel. I can't for the life of me remember the name but ask you Dr. it is the same as like orajel etc. but pers. strength and it works wonders. Good luck! L.

Motrin is an anti-inflammatory. My doctor and several of the daycare children I ahve had over the past 21 years alternates Tylenol and Motrin every two hours. Tylenol for the pain and Motrin for the swelling. Works like a charm.

We used the teething tablets also, in conjunction with the orajel. Personally, I preferred Motrin to Tylenol, and when necessary, you can stagger the two of them. Also, I would give our son the popsicles that come in the plastic sleeve. We would make sure that the plastic sleeve didn't have a sharp edge, and then just let him chew on it like an ice pack without actually opening the popsicle. He loved it because he could get it to those back molars, unlike teething rings. Best of luck to you...

Hi B., I am a mother of three. My 3rd was just like that and I found out about this product called "Hurricane" sounds worst than what it is. you can buy at the pharmacy. Behind the counter and I bought mine at Target. and you only need alittle bit because it takes affect in 15 to 30 seconds it works wonders and I loved it!!! But if also you could try the adult ambesol I used that on my niece when she was little cause i wanted to sleep. So i hope this works for you and your husband.

Hi, teething tablets worked wonders for my kids. You can get them at Walmart in the Rx area. I think they are in the vitiman section, you can ask at the counter. They were a life saver.

I gave up on Tylenol (with blessings from the peditrician) and now use Baby Motrin. It works SOOOOOOOOOOOO much better and lasts longer too.
