Teething Baby--ibuprofen Not Working

My 6 month old son has 2 teeth coming in on bottom. With my girl (now 2 1/2) I gave her ibuprofen or tylenol and she slept through the night without a peep! She never had any trouble with teething.

With my son however, nothing seems to work! I've given him ibuprofen right before bed, and he still wakes up every 1.5 - 3 hours! I don't give them tylenol anymore, because there have been so many recalls on Acetaminophen....
I have also tried the teething tablets... still pain.

Any other suggestions??

What can I do next?

Wet baby washcloths, fold in quarters, stack, place in a ziplock bag, freeze. Remove O. for gnawing as needed.

I going to suggest this may not be teething pain and instead may be a possible ear infection. I would make an appointment with the dr just to check. Both my kids always got ear infections when teething and my daughter never pulled (actually still doesnt) at her ears or anything.

Thankfully DS didn't have much trouble with teething.

Our ped though said that the tylenol takes about 12-15 minutes to kick in, and helps for about 30-45 minutes. So if the tylenol takes the edge off enough to get him over the hump when you put him down, it isn't going to last all night long.

That said, the ped also said that teething isn't really all that bad, and if given a chance to cry some, and fall back asleep many will do so. Little ones can get into habitual night waking if you encourage it.

good luck to you and yours,
F. B.

My DD was a HORRIBLE teether! Everyone would always tell me how she had to have something other than teething going on, yet the pediatrician could never find anything else, and agreed that my DD had an abnormally hard time with it.

The Hylands tablets (I have tried a couple other brands, and Hylands are the only ones that dissolve fast enough and actually worked...)

I used to freeze bananas and put them in a mesh feeder for her. It was messy, but she LOVED it and it helped. (I just used a toothbrush to clean the gunk out of the feeder, and sanitized it in the dishwasher...) I also liked to freeze other fruit-based baby foods in ice cube trays, and put them in the feeder as well.

Frozen washcloths, like others have suggested.

IF I could see where the tooth was pushing, I would put some nighttime (thicker formula) oragel on that specific spot. I tended to use that as a last resort though, because unless you know EXACTLY where to apply it, it won't do much good.

Good luck!

Ibuprofen never worked for my son. Tylenol was always way better and still is.

I also give him cold things, like Popsicles he loves! and they really help.
Hyland's teething tablets are amazing!

And I second, third etc the people that say get him checked out for an ear infection too, those are really painful!

My daughter was more tolerant when teething.
My son however, was not. And it really tweaked him.
Its just a thing you gotta ride out.
Or ask your Pediatrician about suggestions.
Don't give too much Ibuprofen.

Also, maybe your baby is just needing a feeding?
6 months is ALSO a growth-spurt period and babies get hungrier more frequently and still need to feed day and night.
It is often, more than 1 thing going on at the same time.

I would give my kids, when babies, a frozen wash cloth to knaw on.

For me, *I* do not believe that teething causes infants pain. Any time my babies (I've had two, my third's on the way) woke up in the middle of the night, whether they were cutting teeth or not, I knew there was something else going on, so I would take them in to see the pedi. Every time, without fail, they had ear infections. That's just my experience though, a lot of Moms believe that teething causes pain, and who knows? Maybe it does. Wish they could tell us what's wrong!! But bottom line, if it were me, I'd call the pedi.

Hi, M.:

The ped can order a gel for his gums. I think it's called Hurricaine.

Good luck.

My little guy is going through this now too. Highlands teething tablets have been a Godsend. I also have been freezing washclothes with a bit of applesauce slathered on it prior to freezing. Those work like magic!
