My four month old son just had his first tooth pop through his gums today. Is 4 months typical for a first tooth to show, or is this early? Anything I can do to help soothe him when he becomes uncomfortable?....he's been great so far, can't believe his tooth is already peaking and he's been generally happy so far!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your great advice! We've used Tylenol and the teething tablets a couple of times and also a wet washcloth on his gums. He actually has 2 teeth now. The 2nd was harder on him than the first, but now that he has both (at 4.5 mos) he's happy as can be. We actually tried rice cereal for the first time today!

My son (now almost 4years old) cut his first tooth at 4 months as well. It's in the realm of normal..although on the early side, at least that is what my family doctor told me. He had all his teeth except for molars by one year. When he was that little he really liked teething blakets, Munchkin makes them. As he got older I let him knaw on a frozen waffle. He loved it.

Good Luck and enjoy those cute first smiles with teeth.

Same thing happened to me with my baby girl. I bought an over the counter tablet to sooth the teething pain. I would try Wild Oats, they should have it. It is a homeopathic remedy and it worked really well. They come in tablets and you rub it over the baby's gums. Crying comes to a screeching halt! Good luck!

Hi R.,

My oldest son got his teeth at four months too. He was pretty good about it. My 3rd child on the other hand did not handle the pain so well. I found a teething pill that is homeopathic from Highlands. These are the BEST thing in helping with tooth pain. The only place I was able to find them was at Jewel and Whole foods. Good luck!

Hi R.,

The Hylands Teething tablets are great. You can get them at Jewel or Target. They do have caffine in them but did not change my daughter's sleeping habits at all. Good luck!

R.,

Hyland Homeopathic teething tablets or Lil Teethers tablets.
They work great! They dissolve quickly in their mouths or you can dissolve them in a teaspoon of water then give it to them.
It really helps when they are cranky and uncomfortable. I have 16 mo old twins and used them from their first tooth up until now. You can get them at most drug stores (Walgreens) or Dominicks I know for sure. Good Luck!

Baby Ambesol works very well. You put a drop on your finger and rub it on his gums. It numbs in just a few seconds.

He'll also want to chew on a lot of things. The best teething ring I've found so far is a water-filled figure-8 sold by Gerber. Keep it in the fridge & pull it out when he wants to chew on something.

Regarding the 4 month tooth, I can't recall exactly but I think I read that that is still normal to get a first tooth between 4-12 months. I wouldn't worry.

Hi R.,
My son got his first tooth at 4 months and by 7 months he had 8 teeth. The first couple are always difficult. I used Tylenol which seemed to help a little but one of the best pain relievers is the mesh teether. You can put cold grapes (i peel the skin), watermelon, frozen applesauce (freeze in ice cube trays) in the teether and then your son sucks on the teether. He is numbing his gums and is getting a nutritious snack. You can get them at Target, One Step Ahead or Babies R Us. I do not like the teething biscuits for babies with teeth. Your son could bite off a piece and not know what to do with it. My son choked once and we switched to the teether.

Hi R.,
He is going to chew on everything! I would start to clean your son's teeth. I know it sounds crazy, but my daughter had her first tooth around 3-4 months and she had a cavity at 3 years old. Imagine my shock because I did brush her teeth. They said because I nursed her while she was sleeping the milk stayed in her mouth. So be mindful of that, I wish I would have thought of that!!!

My duaghter never had any discomfort from teething that required medication. So I would recommend using a wet washcloth in the freezer or my brother used a bag of frozen corn, sounds strange but my nephew loves it.

My daughter started teething at about 4 1/2 months. We used the teething pills which seemed to work okay. We also used baby washclothes soaked in water and placed in the fridge overnight for her to chew on the next day. We also used a special freezer teether when she was around 6 months. When she was really crabby we did give her some baby motrin. Hope this helps!

R.,
My first daughter who is 10 now, got her first tooth about that age. The other ones did not till they were 6 mths. So, it is not to early.

Well, one thing you can use is that baby orajel. That stuff works wonders and even on adult teeth or when my daughters teeth were hurting her last year too. Also, you can get one of those chew toys for teething. The ones with the water in them. Freeze it and then let her suck and chew on it and it will feel so good on her. Also there is this teething tablet. I have never used it, because my kids never really had much trouble with teeth coming in, but I hear it is a great thing from family and also from clients that I have had.

Our daughter cut her first teeth really early as well. no worries. I think that tylenol can help (make sure you are dosing at the right level for his weight, etc). Teethers are great. We bought the "orbit" which was more of a toy than a teether. A wet washcloth is supposed to be good too - our daughter loved it. I am not sure if you are breast feeding...when our daughter started to teeth, she had an increase in biting down while nursing. My only advice there is don't react (good, bad, etc.) too much because he will enjoy the reaction and it might lead to an increase in biting - just break the latch, smile, say "no biting" and keep your fingers crossed. Good Luck!

I have two boys, and when they were small and teething, we would put teething rings that were softer with some kind of liquid in them into the fridge or even freezer= cold things soothe their gums. The topical ointments they sell in the grocery like Orajel worked for some of my friends, but I have heard they arent worth it. Four months is common for a first tooth. Congrats!

Four months is early but quite normal forteeth to appear so don't worry. A friend of mine suggested putting a wet washcloth in the freezer for a few hours then letting your baby chew on it. The cold seems to feel good on their gums and helps relieve discomfort. My son's teeth are coming in in a wierd order but the first ones didn't bother him. More recent ones (top middle two) have caused him a lot of trouble - fevers and general crankiness but Tylenol seems to make things more comfortable for him. Other people have recommended Motrin to reduce swelling but I haven't tried it (yet).

It is absolutely normal for little ones to teeth anywhere from 3 months to 1 year or so. So don't worry- they are on their own schedule. As far as giving them something for the pain- I know that places like Whole Foods and Peoples Market have some homeopathic remedies that are safe for your baby. There are some teething tablets that seem to be effective. But I would say you probably have to try for yourself and see what happens. Good Luck! T.

My 4 month old is getting his first teeth too. It's fine, 4 months is not uncommon. We use Hylands teething tablets & teething rings. We have one shaped kin of like a flower that vibrates, I forget what it is called, but it's the only one he likes. At night we use Tylenol along with the teething tablets, so he sleeps a bit better. Hope this helps!

Yes, it is early but my eldest son had his first tooth peaking at 3 months. He was born teething.lol My second son however, didn't get his first tooth til 12 months. So, it all depends. I noticed that to relieve pain during the day, a cold cloth to chew on or sweeback toast. Teething tablets are good things too.

Don't worry...it's perfectly normal...My 2 youngest were early teethers as well (4 months) and they were great! In fact, we didn't even know they were teething. My daughter grabbed my finger and stuck it in her mouth so I decided to feel around a little...inagine my shock when I felt a tooth there! As long as he's not "complaining" be blessed and enjoy the happiness! He may not be bothered at all!

Whoa! That seems early to me... but my two girls were very LATE in getting teeth! My 2 1/2 year old is still working on her molars!!!

Try Hylands teething tabs... they are homiopathic... and FANTASTIC. My youngest is 9 months, and she will eat them with no problem... the disolve instantly... and really do the trick.

Good luck!
