Teething!!! - Indianapolis,IN

Has anyone else had horrible teething experiences with their children? You would have never known my eight year old daughter ever got her teeth it went so smoothly. My poor nine month old son is miserable. He will not chew on cold teethers or wash rags, I give him Tylenol and have tried the oragel. He will not drink as much and eats off and on. He used to put everything in his mouth now if you touch him wrong it gets upset. He's not sleeping, he's just miserable. Is it supposed to be this bad?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thank you for all your responses! I've already ruled out ear infection as I took him to the doctor last week and he was diagnosed with a sinus infection. I'm almost positive it's his teeth, he has four coming in. I just never thought teething was that bad, he won't chew on anything cold, warm, hard nothing. I've called his doctor again just to be sure.

We went through that with my daughter. She cut five teeth at once and it was miserable! She wound up with a severe double ear infection at the same time. It seemed like whenever she got teeth, she got an ear infection. I agree with the person that said use Motrin instead of Tylenol. Tylenol NEVER worked for us while my dd was teething. Munchkin makes something called a self-feeder. They are AMAZING! We would put frozen fruit in my dd's and she would suck on that. It helped relieve her pain and she got some fruit in the process :) I've heard of people using frozen waffles and bagels too. Good luck! Teething is NO FUN!

I'm kind of like the lady who suggested the whiskey. Alot of the old time granny remedies work great. We gave our youngest baby Coca-cola (just a tsp. people!) when she was colicky, it worked really good for temorary relief. She'd still get colicky every evening. Obviously these things aren't "cures" they just help out with easing the pain. And of course, it's not like you fill a bottle with it.

Have you tried Hyland's Teething Tablets? That's what we used for my son and they worked great. They dissolve in the mouth instantly, so don't need to worry about choking. My son would get 2 teeth at a time, EVERY time and was in misery. These really seemed to help take the edge off.

When my daughter was inconsolable from teething, I used Hyland's Teething Tablets. They are over the counter and usually can be found near the baby orajel in most drug stores. I got ours at CVS. Good luck....poor baby sounds miserable!

Hi M.
I dont think it should be that bad...even when the molars coming around 2 years old. You might want to take him in to rule out and ear infection. Otherwise I would try orajel and Motrin works better for me that Tylenol. Teething has not disturbed my 10 month old from sleeping. I still think you should rule out everything and get him into the doc. Good luck

Yep, unfortunately this sounds pretty normal. My son wouldn't really eat solids at all and drank less milk. He also doesn't like the cold teethers but will put the room temperature ones in his mouth. Here in Australia we have a numbing gel that can be applied to the gums. It's by prescription only but I can't remember the name of it at the moment. It's hard to find but the main ingredient is Ligocaine, which is a numbing agent dentists use. Cucumber or mushy bananas might feel good on his gums, if you can get him to put them in his mouth. Sorry to hear he's having such a bad time with it!

Hi M.,
Please dont use the teething tablets. They contain Belladonna and it is a hallucinogen. Also if a baby has allergies to certain types of foods (potatoes, eggplants, or peppers) the baby will have a more severe reaction to the belladonna. Motrin works best also freezer pops. My DD is having the same issue right now and also has been miserable. She is getting 4 teeth at a time! Also a humitifier helps because they get the nasal drainage at night making them cough and snore. Good luck!

First: With the orajel, make sure you use the swabs...it's a lot easier to make sure the stuff goes where it's supposed to go with those swabs. Someone suggested teething tablets - we never used those, mostly because the orajel always worked and that just happened to be what we tried first, but it's worth trying if the orajel isn't working.

Second: Use Motrin instead of Tylenol. Tylenol works great on fevers, but with teething, Motrin always worked better on both our daughters.

Third: try getting those "popsicles" things that come in the plastic tube. It'll give "flavor" to the cold stuff and might work on his gums. Try cold water in a sippy cup or even a few bites of a frosty from Wendy's.

Just a few suggestions from what worked for us...hope they'll work for you. Good luck!!
