Hi out there! I was wondering if anyone has any creative ideas on how to deal with teething. We have tried baby oragel, Hylands, and teething rings (none of which has helped). My four month old is just MISERABLE! HELP!!!
Thanks everyone for their advice, it is much appreciated! I did try the washcloth and mesh thing with frozen fruit that seemed to help. I am going to try to find those vibrating rings though.

They do make teething tablets that dissolve very easily & quickly for infants. You can find them by the orajel. I used them with both my daughters and I also tried infants Motrin & Tylenol, that seemed to help a bit. Me second was awful when she was teething. I also tried freezing celery and carrots and letting her chew on them, she liked it for a little bit & that also seemed to help. Good luck!!

My grandma or someone of that sort said using vanilla extract rubbed on the gums does the trick. We ALWAYS used it and it seemed to help. The only thing I know of and it's a cheap fix. Good luck.......my heart goes out to you with a baby so young and teething. J.

Hello there. My daughter was just a little older when she started having real trouble with teething, and we are still dealing with it at just about 10 months, but here are a few things that I do to help her through...1st--I take one of her baby washcloths (normal size waschcloths were just too big and bulky for her to try and hold) and I fold it in half, and then in half again and then I take a rubber band and I wrap it around the end tightly (with all of the loose ends of the cloth) and pull up, leaving enough cloth on the bottom for her to hold on to, as to create what looks like a ghost...then I get just the 'head' of the ghost damp and I put it in the freezer. Once really cold, I then sit with her and let her chomp away on it and it really seems to help her. The other thing I do is put either a small chunk of banana, or a couple of large grapes into her mesh feeder and I put it in the freezer and then let her gnaw away on the frozen fruit. This can get messy...so make sure you have a good bib on your little one. I hope you get some good ideas that will bring some relief to your little one. It's so hard to watch them struggle with the pain of teething. God bless...

Washcloths have worked great for my 8 month old. Sometimes I wet it and put it into the freezer for a little while. Other times I just run it under cold water, ring it out and let her go to town. She loves it.

Hi R....sorry to hear that the lil one is hurting...their pain makes things miserable for them and for you. I would suggest powdered calcium/magnesium added to juice or milk...the calcium is nature's tranquilizer and calms all the nerves in the body including tooth pain. You can get it in powdered form...not sure on the quantity so I would check with the healthfood store nutritionist. They can recommend an amount safe for the lil one. I take 2,000 mg when I have toothpain and also, recommend that to my adult friends until they can get into the dentist to solve the problem. Calcium is safe and good for the body which is able to metabolize it safely. Just a suggestion...will pray for you...have a blessed day! di

Motrin!!!
The average age for the first tooth to come in is 6 months old. Once the tooth has broken through the pain goes away but then the next one starts. Just before bed, give the baby a dose of ibuprophen and wipe out his mouth and put him to bed. Sleep also helps (both mother and baby!)

Have you tried partial freezing his teething ring?? The cold feels really good to the teething baby. There are many natural ways out there, check out this sight.
What worked best for my daughter was actually crushed up ice. We put some cubes in a baggie and smashed them to smithereens. Then just gave her a few at a time. They were small enough it wasn't a hazard and they melt quickly. It was kind of fun. Anyway, something different. Best of luck!

My sister-in-law bought about ten cheap pacifiers and put them in the freezer. She would pop them in the babies mouth until it thawed out and then got a new one. Keep an eye on them to make sure that they don't start to come apart. Cold spoons work too.
I like teething bisquits and if I was absolutely sure that it was teething I would give mine Motrin at night to help them sleep...during the day we just did cold spoons and teething bisquits. Also cold teething rings.
Oh, and Humphries homeopathic teething pills work great too. Pop about six of those in their mouth one at a time and they will be better for about 1/2 an hour to an hour.

My youngest absolutely LOVED the vibrating teethers you can find them at walmart or online. We have 2 a start and a winnie-the-pooh honey pot one. My son liked the honey pot best because it was softer and easier to get to vibrate. (I didn't know about them with my oldest). Another thing I tried that worked pretty well was a cold wash cloth.

I used to wet, ring out & freeze a wash cloth & put it in a plastic bag in the freezer---I would then give it to my daughter to chew on--it would soften up as she would chew--really worked for me.

YOur baby is probably not teething; your baby is probably OVER-TIRED. Call Dr. Marc WEissbluth: ###-###-####. People say it's teething, but it's lack of sleep -- babies need soooo much sleep! Good luck.

Hi R.,
i used to put my daughters binkie's in the freezer. This helped to numb and soothe her. She never used her binkie's for anything other than this and it worked!
Good Luck!

letting your baby chew on wash cloths is always a good idea. I always just soaked them in cold water, rung them out and put them in the freezer for a few minutes till it was super cold. My kids both love chewing on them and they can get them in the backs of their mouthes. Also whole carrots are great for teething too. Good luck. Teething is never fun.
Try the Sassy teething feeder. It looks like a pacifier with a mesh bag. You can put frozen fruit in it. It teaches them how to chew but without the risk of choking. My oldest had no interest in it, but my 8 month old (with 8 teeth waiting to come through) likes it. I find that frozen blueberries or cold grapes do the trick.

I read a mama on here giving her baby real vanilla extract, not imitation. You can use frozen green beans, baby carrots for your baby to such on and feel better. Surprised the Hyland's didn't work.
good luck!!

Did you use the Hylands gel or pills? The gel did nothing for us, but the pills seem to help. One word of caution - the caffeine made my son WIRED so we have to be careful about giving to close to sleeping.
The top teeth have been really tough for us, too. The doctor finally said not to be afraid of giving Tylenol (not supposed to use Motrin below six months) because they shouldn't have to be in pain.
A friend recommended rubbing some Amaretto on his gums. I never had the nerve to try that, but I'm writing this after a sleepless night so I'm considering relenting.

Hi R., my daughter loved/loves a frozen pacifier. I just put a little water in it, and then freeze it. I go through pacifiers quicker (replacing them every month) but the $5 is worth it. I also had the baby washclothes (really thin ones) and tied a knot in it. Put it under really cold water, and let her "drink" away. The peditrician said that the little water she actually drink (and not drool's out) won't hurt her.
Good Luck!

There are homeopathic teething tablets at Walgreens. They will instantly disolve and will help. BUT, follow what the bottle says...don't pop 6 in your childs mouth as another poster suggested below.. I believe that the bottle says 2-3. Also, Tylenol with the approval from your ped. It'll be okay!! I also got a rubber toothbrush that I could put on my finger and let our daughter knaw away. She seemed to be soothed by it. Good luck...and remember, this too, shall pass!

My pediatrician suggested liquid Benadryl. She told me to rub some on his gums and it will numb his gums instead of numbing his whole mouth like Oragel will. I don't like to give him medicine unless it's truly necessary and this made him more comfortable and he slept well. I tried the Highland teething tablets and they did not work for my son (he is six months old). I also put the teething toys either in the freezer or the fridge and give him those to chew on during the day. I also just bought him a teether from Kushies that he seems to really like alot. Good luck!

I've been told by a dentist that teething is very painful and that we as adults would have a difficult time with it. He recommended Children motrin or Ibuprophen. Caution not to give more than a day or two in a row because of its effects on the liver. Also recommended chewing on a NUK brush to assist cutting the tooth. Once the tooth is through the pain is done. NUK brush sets are sold at target.

My daughter as well as our friend's son and other friend's daughter LOVED the vibrating teething items. I believe one is by First Years and is a star. When they bite down, it vibrates which massages the gums. That was, as I mentioned, a big hit with the kids in our social group. Good luck!

If your baby takes a pacifier, keep a few in the freezer. For my son, the super cold pacifier would immediately help his gums and he loved it. Later we just got in the habit of keeping a couple in the freezer to calm him down if he got upset because he loved it so much. My pediatrician also recommended keeping a wet washcloth in the freezer for a bit and letting him chew on that. You'll have to let it warm up a little bit after taking it out of the freezer so it's not so freezing. My son never really loved the washcloth thing, but apparently it works well for some babies.
