Ok for you moms who had a little one who cut their first tooth late I need some advise. My daughter will be 1 on the 22nd and still does not have any teeth but i think she may finally be getting ready to cut one. Here is my question, how bad was the teething process when they didnt start till this late? She has been waking up in the middle of the night for the last few days she has been very cranky and has been chewing on anything and everything she can get her little mouth on. We did not go through this with my oldest (he cut his first tooth at 4 months and had 6 teeth by 6 months) he never had any sleep disruption when teething, and really was not even cranky at all so we are kinda lost on how to help her. Been giving her tylenol and using oragel but that doesnt seem to be helping at all. Any advise would be useful

What can I do next?

It varies from child to child. Our older one ended up getting a molar rather young and then had nothing else until she was about 11 mo. However, when she finally did start getting teeth, they came in atleast pairs, sometimes upto 4 at a time. Our Ped really frowns upon the oragel because of the sugar content. I would freeze some of the teething rings and other items for her...even give her a washcloth wet with cold water for her to chew/suck on...and lots of hugs, kisses and cuddles.

my daughter starting cutting teeth at 6 months and she went through the same thing for her first couple of teeth. I would give her some tylenol right before bed and if she woke up in the middle of the night I would wait a couple min. to she if she would go back to sleep and if she didn't then I would give her another dose of tylenol. I also use the hylands teething tablets and my daughter actually gives them to herself now and points at the bottle if her teeth bother her. Does your daughter have a favorite stuff animal or a blankie? Right around the time my daughter started teething she become attatched to a stuffed bunny that she sucks on and now she can't sleep with out it. It has helped her sooth herself when she wakes up in the middles of the night. Maybe try a couple of different things until she finds something that she likes.

Have her suck on frozen waffles. Even if a piece breaks off its all slobbery and soft. Frozen wet wash cloths help too. =)

My son cut his first tooth around 11 months. The first couple teeth are the most painful, until they hit the molars (probably because the baby isn't used to it yet!) The most painful time is actually before the tooth cuts through the gum, when there is so much pressure. My son wouldn't take cold teethers, but you might try some. Make sure it is BPA-free plastic, and don't freeze it but keep it in the fridge for a couple of hours. This might feel good on her gums. If she is able to use a sippy cup on her own, when she wakes up in the middle of the night, give her some Tylenol (make sure you use generic since I believe the name-brand is still on recall) and a sippy cup of ice cold water. This will help to numb her mouth and will also feel good.

Lots of people recommend Hyland's Teething Tablets (including Dr. Sears) and Oragel. My son HATED both, but if your child will take them, they supposedly work well. Something else you might try - I read somewhere that GENTLY brushing your child's gums (and eventually new teeth) with a baby toothbrush helps break down the gums and makes teething slightly easier. My son enjoyed the sensation, as well, and it gets kids used to having their teeth brushed at a young age. You can use fluoride-free baby toothpaste or not, up to you, and some people prefer true baby toothbrushes while others like the little gentle finger caps. For kids that suffer from teething pains, this time seems to last forever. I wish you luck!

I used teething tablets with my first and they did seem to work. I didn't use Hylands, not familiar with that brand, but the kind I used did not melt in the mouth so easily as advertised. I would "melt" them in a tiny bit of water inside a spoon then suck it up witha Motrin syringe and shoot it in her mouth. It worked like a charm! Otherwise she just spit them out! I haven't used them yet with my son, he is an even later teether than his sister, although not quite as late as your little on it seems! He's 9 months and just cut his first tooth. Also, try Motrin instead of Tylenol b/c it has an anti inflamatory agent that will help with the swelling in the gums. Mine like cold washclothes too!

Oragel does not taste very good. Try some tylenol along with hylands teething tablets. My son did very well with those. Freeze some wet washclothes and give her those to chew on. Buy the hylands at pathmark, walmart, target or walgreens. I found them the cheapest at pathmark. If you are at walmart and target and do not see them out ask the pharmacy. They are natural and one of my friends swears by them. She stated it helped her son sleep a lot better. Good luck

Gonna add my two cents in here. An age old teething and toothache remedy is clove oil. I made some for my little one and my oldest son also uses it for tooth pain when his teeth are coming out. I bought clove bud essential oil. I used olive oil as a base and added about 4 to 10 drops of the clove oil to 1 tbsp olive oil. The essential oil MUST be diluted. Just rub a drop or two on the gums and it numbs it right up
