My 6 month old just recently cut his bottom front two teeth. The first tooth started to poke through one week ago and the second a day or so afterward. He has been unusually fussy for the past week (because of the teething)and nothing seems to help. We have tried tylenol, motrin, teething rings, frozen face clothes, everything I can think of and nothing seems to work! He also refuses to eat solids (he's usually a BIG eater).I feel terrible for the little guy :( Does anyone have any other ideas to decrease his pain? And how long will this last? I thought once the teeth came through the gums, the pain got better??

So What Happened?

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!! He seems to be feeling a little bit better today...I think the bottom two are just about all the way through. We did buy a mesh feeder and tried banana and ice which he liked for a short while. I also bought baby orajel and hyland's tablets, both of which really seemed to help him. It's just nice knowing that we're not the only one's having such a terrible time with teething! Thanks again :)

Go to Whole Foods and pick up some Hyland's Teething Tablets. They have saved us many times! (We have a 2.5 year old and 4 month old). Good luck.

You can try Hylands teething gel or tablets. It's homeopathic so I don't feel that guilty for constantly giving to my 6 month old. You can also try baby oragel. The hylands seems to work but the relief is short-lived. Good luck.

I'm just reading this late, but I am dealing with some of the same issues with my son teething, sometimes the only thing I can do is bounce him to calm him. He doesn't like to eat, or sleep when he is teething, he just likes to cry and fuss. The Hyland's teething tablets didn't seem to work for him. I also have tried the orajel and it didn't do anything I could see. I am going to try a few other things people mentioned. So thanks for asking this question.

We used a lot of frozed flavor ice and go-gourts. They got something(not the bets for them) in them and the ice cold helped their poor little gums.

We use Hyland's homeopathic teething tablets. They work better than anything else we have ever tried and they don't have any side effects. They're available pretty much anywhere Anbesol is sold (Walgreens, Walmart, supermarket, etc.).

My son did the same thing. He is now 11 months. He is a huge eater, but for about 3 weeks would barely eat anything but from the bottle. I didn't find anything that was a great help, he just wanted that pressure inside his mouth, but I think the spoon for some reason agitated him. It probably lasted about 3 weeks and then his appetite came back. Hang in there!

My 7.5 mo. boy has his two bottom teeth and the top ones on the way. I use a combination of methods.

BABY SAFE FEEDER - stuff the little mesh bag with frozen organic banana, or pear, etc. and even just ice helped him so much.

GUMOMILE OIL - its got clove oil in it. burns at first, but then it numbs pretty well. He got used to the burning pretty quick - as long as he is not too upset already. If nothing else, he loves to teeth on the hard cool little glass bottle it comes in.

Baby teething gel - when the going gets real tuff or i just need some sleep, I go for the hardcore medicine. I know that is what I like when I have tooth pain. For best results I put it on a q-tip and rub it around and let him bite on it right where its swollen.

Also, I tried Camila, and it did make me feel better than giving him drugs, but I really could not tell if it made him feel better.

Good luck.

Hi A.,
As a mom of 6, I can say that every child is so different when it comes to teething pain. Some really seem to suffer. The only other things I can think of are using that baby ambesol (but it only lasts a little while), rubbing his gums real hard where you think he has teeth coming in to ease the tenderness and swelling (he may also be getting the top ones), or getting one of those mesh infant feeders (where you can put a chunk of food in and they can chew it through the mesh) and put a frozen chunk of his favorite food in it. If you rub his gums he won't like it at first, but it may help ease it a little bit after the initial resistance. Other than that, I don't have much to give you. Hope it helps -- it stinks seeing them so miserable.

I'd have his ears checked..... I've also had alot of results with having my children adjusted at the chiropractor if they do have fluid in their ears. It helps the lymph system drain properly. K.

The pain may not have stopped because the top two may be on their way through as well. My got his in quick succession. He also stops eating when he is teething, but are you still nursing? Remember that many mamas dont offer solids until a year, so he can surely get all he needs from his milk. Also, i use some homeopathic teething tablets that you can get at wholefoods, they seem to help a lot. Lastly, you can get some high quality clove essential oil, mix it with olive oil (about 1 drop clove to 3 T olive) and rub this on his gums. It works wonders to numb the gums - i used it myself when i got my wisdom teeth.

Hi A.,
I have a 14 month old boy and he got his first teeth very early and only has two more to come in before having a full mouth full - so I can relate b/c he is still teething. I found that if I gave him orajel while waiting for the tylenol or motrin to kick in it would work. When he was younger (around your son's age) we use to keep apples in the fridge and put them in the net teething ring. Sometimes we would freeze juice in icecube trays and put that in the net teether and it would REALLY help with the pain. The net teething ring was a life saver. I hope this helps!

My son is one of the worst teethers my pediatrician has ever seen. He is cutting his 2 yr molars, so I am SO glad that this will be over soon. He goes on eating strikes to the point that the pedi told me to take him for icecream (at 10 months!)He also had to have pediasure for a while.
The three pieces of advie I can give you are these
1. Teething pain is over when its over, with my son it NEVER stopped once the tooth came through (plus he might be getting more teeth)
2. Mesh feeders with frozen banana and pears was a lifesaver!
3. Try the Camilia teething drops from Whole Foods ( I was not a fan of Highlands' teething tabs) they seem to work well and are not to expensive.

Hi A.,

Hyland's Teething Tablets (as previously mentioned) really are the best. I have three daughters, my youngest 6 months old also, and these tablets have been the best for them all. I tried other brand tablets, and didn't like those, because they don't dissolve as fast or as thoroughly as Hyland's brand. The tablets are completely natural, and work within minutes. Good Luck!

My daughter had a terrible time with her teeth too. Hyland's teething tablets (already suggested by another reader) worked wonders for us and are all-natural; we got them at CVS. For really bad teething I used teething tablets and teething gel together. Good luck!

Sometimes giving the food cold - jars in the fridge or frozen puree defrosted but still cold helps us. Our son's not big on teethers but cold apple slices, cold watermelon (it's messy!) and even ice in the baby-safe feeder is a big hit.

My third son is 9 months old and also started with his first two tooth the week before he was 6 months old. The first two came thru no problem...but since then it has been excrutiating. Thank goodness Tylenol does help with him. This will probably continue throughout his little life until he gets all his teeth (at least that was my experience with my other two.) Talk to your doc and see if there is any other med options out there to try and sooth him. In regards to eating...don't worry he won't starve himself. He just doesn't feel good and eating is not on the top of his list. When a kid is hungry...they will eat...I promise!!

We had some teething pain with our daughters last bunch of teeth and someone suggested we use one of those food nets. You know the ones on a ring that you stick the food in and they can suck or bite it and get flavor or pulp without getting big chunks?'

Worked like a dream! We put apple slices in it and stuck them in the freezer...she went to town and slept like a, well....like a baby!

We had success with frozen bananas wrapped and held in a cloth napkin or dish towel (so your hand doesn't freeze while holding the other end) and putting frozen peas and bananas in a net teether. Others suggest refrigerated carrots, but make sure he's not breaking off pieces with his current teeth!

Hylands teething tablets have worked really well for us too. I have also used Humphrey's #3 homeopathic teething remedy. You can get them in some CVS stores. You usually have to ask the pharmacist for it but they sometimes have it on a shelf. If not you can google it and order it online. The Humphrey's are hard pellets, so I diluted 2 or 3 in a little water them gave the liquid to my daughter with a syringe. I have found that homeopathic remedies are no only safer than giving repeated doses of tylenol but they seem to work better as well. Good luck!

Poor kid! Teething is indeed painful. Why not try putting some Ora Jell on his gums? It has numbing qualities that will help quite a bit.
BTW: Homeopathic remedies are so deluted they have little or no active ingredients left in them and are a waste of time and money.

Hi A.,

I have a 5 and 3 year old boys -
We did some fun things:
"pizza bones" in the high chair, the firm crust of pizza to naw at...if pieces got small - I would throw out - even froze them individually for future use.
Ambesol in the fridge on a rotating tooth brush does wonders !
Once I got the ambesol in ...I would let the boys use the rotating brush on the teeth.

Good Luck !

Hi A.,
We are doing the exact same thing, right now! I swear he teethed for 3 months to get the bottom 2, and now the top 2 are taking forever also. You can even see the gums ripping open- Yee-ouch!. Hylands teething tablets are saving us, along with ibuprofin at bedtime, and a frozen food cube inside the mesh feeder during solid food feedings. It is hard to see them in pain, and 'starving', especially when you know they usually eat more than that. Just keep nursing as much as possible, and try to within 5 minutes of giving the tablets. Also if you freeze the food into cubes then put into the mesh feeder, at least he will get some nourishment from chewing and sucking on that. Also, with the 2 sharpies on the bottom now, don't use those water filled teethers anymore as he can bite through it now.
Good luck!

You definitely need Teething Tablets! I tried oragel...waste of time, it doesn't stay on long at all...and numerous other types of teething products before my friend told me about teething tablets. They are made by Hyland, the box is blue and pink. You can find them in some walmarts or targets, but definitely in health food stores. My son had a terrible time with teething! He woke up in pain every night. These calmed his pain INSTANTLY and allowed him to get sleep and be pain free. They are a homeopathic remedy and easy to take(they dissolve in their mouth). It's safe to give many to the child...many times I gave my son 6 or 7 if the pain was intense.

GOod luck!

every baby's different sometimes all the teeth are coming in at once, even if you can't see them yet, maybe that's why he still seems in pain.
