Teething 1 Yr Old

Help! My 1-yr old has been teething for a few weeks now and has recently started gagging himself! He is shoving all his fingers in his mouth, and so far back that he makes himself gag to the point of almost vomiting. Teething rings and tylenol don't seem to help much anymore.

Is this behavior normal? I thought he was getting his incisors but could this amount of discomfort be due to molars? Isn't it too early??

C.,

I have adopted the mantra...'anything is possible' when it comes to my son and growth stuff.

Tylenol does little for my son, so I use Motrin for teething. Also, a friend of mine introduced me to Clove Oil for teething swelling and pain. It worked WAY better than the teething tablets or gels and was easy to put on with just a wachcloth. I love Whole Foods, they have something for everything!!!

If you are concerned about the gagging you may want to call the Pedi and ask he/she that question. My son never did that but, again EVERY kid is different. Its tough to watch them all the time, but if you see him do it remove his hands and then gently talk to him. Redirection might help a bit, but if he's in pain he may need something to help him get past the angst.

Good Luck!

Hi C.:
This is such a trying time for both you and your little guy.It can be confusing, because during the day, when they are preoccupied with playing and running around, they can appear just FINE. Night time comes, and all of a sudden they are miserable. If you think about it,all of us are like that when we're under the weather. When we're busy, were able to take our mind off of whats bothering us,but when all is quiet, and your just laying there,it seems like all you have to do is concentrate on whats hurting.Toddlers can get there first year molars anywhere between 12 and 16 months.Your child may not of had such a tough time with the front teeth, because they are thinner and easier to break through the gum, however the molars are a lot thicker, and harder to break through. This is what causes the pain. The reason he shoves his entire fist in his mouth,is hes desperately trying to find relief. It helps soothe the pain, when he puts some pressure on his gums.I like the pain relievers that Deanna came up with. I like the idea of giving him a cold wash cloth to suck on. It puts pressure on the gums, while numbing the area a little giving some relief. It will also catch alot of the drewl,so he doesn't choke on that. If you have a few pacifiers around, you can chill those and let him chew on those. Ice pops can help. Baby Orajel, may help at bed time, along with the pain medication. Its not easy, but try to have patience, while hes going through this time.It won't be long, and all his little teeth will be accounted for,and he'll be a happy boy. I wish you and your darlin son the best.J. M

My son got all his molars early. By the time he was 2 years old, he had ALL his teeth already.

For him, what would help a great deal is, chewing and chomping on ice chips.
So, being that our ice dispenser has this with just a push of a button on the freezer door... my son would even go up to it and 'tell' me he wanted MORE ice. Or he'd be trying to push the button himself to get more out. He'd chomp on the ice chips ALL day. And whenever he got this way, we just KNEW he was teething and getting more teeth in. And yep, sure enough he was!

And yes, Motrin might help more. Tylenol is good for fever, and Motrin for pain/inflammation or in conjunction with fever.

All the best,
Susan

My son, who is also 1, is going through this as well. He is getting his molars, although thankfully almost done. So, yes, it is very possible to have them this early. Prepare for the crankiness! They try and try to get at them, but it's harder. I used those long really hard breadsticks from the grocerystore... he would gnaw on those until they became mushy enough to eat... messy, but it worked. I also use Motrin for him... works better for pain.

If you can when he starts putting his fingers in his mouth maybe you should get you finger and kind of massage his gums for him to help soothe his pain. I use to that for my son and it kind of helped him. Are you freezing the teething rings? If your not, try freezing them before you give them to your son. Also I use to give my son these little teething tablets to my son and they worked for him. Here is the website so you can learn more about it. You can buy them at CVS.

I hope this helps.

What he is doing is normal, and obviously it does not hurt or he would stop. He will quit though.

Hi C.! My daughter did the same thing when she was about that age! My doctor told me that when there is excessive saliva often times their throat gets swollen and they feel like they are gagging a bit! My daughter got about 6 teeth by the time she was 4 months old! It was insane! So i think it all depends on the child when they get their teeth and which ones! Good luck, the teething years aren't easy :) Oh and keep a bottle of night time Orajel with you always! That is your ticket! Use the night time, it is stronger and lasts longer!

C.,

Try using the Baby Oral Gel in the Q-tip form. It comes in a pink box and works wonders. It is berry flavored. I would keep a bottle of water near by just so my kids had something to drink afterward. He is sticking his hands in his mouth because his gums hurt. Everyone that I've talked to that has used this says that that is the ticket.

Good luck

I noticed Deanna Leigh mention clove oil. This is a natural analgesic, but be sure you understand how to use it. No more than a drop or two on YOUR finger, then you rub it on the gums. Do not drop it directly into his mouth, or his gums, because the natural numbing could be too much for the toddler and could cause him to choke on things, since the whole mouth can go numb if too much is used. But that's the same warning with Orajel too, so just be aware.

The gagging oneself can be common for some. Our Q use to do it so I contacted a medical professional. She said that he may just have a strong gagging reflex, that he may be experimenting or that his body may need to gag. Little ones are the the prime example of people who listen to their body, it just comes so natural.

As far as teething, we have found that Boiron's Camilia® safely & effectively reduces the symptoms of teething. So much so, that when our little guy was teething he would walk over to the cabinet and point to where we kept his medicine. I also use to massage his gums with an infant tooth brush. Also, there are mesh bags that are on a teething ring type contraption. We use to fill the bag full of frozen peas or other frozen fruits & veggies. It helps numb the gums and offers a little nutrition as well.

Every child is different & has a different pain threshold. Keep trying until you find what works for your little one.

Warmly,
S.

a year old is not too young to be getting molars... get one of those teething rings that can be put in the freezer to get cold... it will help more than one at room temp...

My 18 month old did the same thing. It ended up being a phase that he went thru for about 2 months. He still does it every once in a while. Kids find all sorts of fun things to do with their bodies. I reminded him each time I saw him doing it that he needs to be nice to himself and choking himself wasn't nice.

he is probably getting molars. my daughters where swollen forever (shes a slow teether). at 13 months they looked ready to bust through but didnt until 17 months. shes 2 and almost has all 4 insisors in. what works well for her is the gentle natural teething drops. also try brushing his teeth he may like the feel of the tooth brush (my little one uses and electric one :)). my daughter with her insisors has her fingers in her mouth constantly because the top ones are super slowly comming in and are very red. i just tell her to take her fingers out of her mouth. oh and motrin is better for pain then tylenol. when my daughter was cutting her molars her dr had me give 1 full dose of motrin and a 1/2 does of tylenol plus i used the gentle natural teething drops. good luck!

Hi C., I too am a first time mom, of a 13 month old yes it is normal I just tell him not to do it. As a dental hygienist I recommend using a pea size amount of baby orajel this may help to soothe the itching and pain, not too much because it can go down the back of his throat and could gag him even more and cause him difficulty in swallowing I hope this helps. I feel you I am going through the same thing

I freeze a wet wash cloth and give it to my son. The cold really helps and he love sucking on it. Just watch him, you don't want him to tear the wash cloth with his new teeth. Cold applesauce always made my son feel better. This are only short term fixes but at least it's something new to try. Good luck !

My son did the same thing when he was working on his molars and canines. He would gag himself to the point of vomiting, particuarly right after eating if he was still in his highchair with nothing to do but think about the pain, I guess. I found that the quicker I got him out and off to play again, the quicker he'd get distracted enough to quit doing it. At his one-year appointment, the doctor mentioned he was swollen at all four molar spots, and not to frighten you, but it was another three months before they all broke through. Even then, only a corner at a time, so it seemed to take forever before he was truly himself again. Not to mention that immediately following the molars came the canines. He was on Hyland's teething tablets for pretty much every nap and at bedtime and Motrin on the really bad days. Hang in there!

my son just turned one last week and his first molars are popping threw. IT SUCKS!! His dentist said that they get their molars before their incisors. We use baby night time oragjel on him with teething tablets. He gags himself all the time to, its natural, hes just figuring himself out, he'll stop when he realizes he doesn't like it

Hi C.,

My son is 10 months old and already has 6 teeth, with 2 more on the way! I'm not sure if the gagging is "normal", but my son did it too. I try to just gently pull his fingers back out when I see it, but I think generally he knows when to stop. He hasn't actually thrown up yet. My son didn't like teething rings either. Tylenol helped, but he was getting so many teeth one after another, that I didn't want to give it to him for too long. The only thing I found that he liked was wetting paper towel (the sturdy kind) and then rolling it into a tight "cigar" shape. I would hold one end and he would just go to town sucking and biting it. Be careful he doesn't bite any off (I would tuck in the end of it so no loose pieces could get sucked off) but my son really enjoyed it. Hope this helps!

Hi,

My kids didn't seem to respond to teething rings, teething tablets and baby Tylenol. Orajel (benzocaine gel) seems to be more effective.

Good luck,
