Teaching 5Yr Old About Female Anatomy

My 5 year old daughter sometimes asks questions about my body, and I've always answered them as clear & simple as I can. And of course she's asked some about babies, which I also answer honestly.

My question is, is there a good book or maybe even just a Web site that explains the female body in a simple way for a 5 year old? I think at this point I'd rather it only be about the female body - not male yet (tho I would always answer questions if she asked). I just want her to know about her own body first.

I've been looking online, and all the site's I find with diagrams and info seem to be too advanced - too detailed into each system of the body & what they do, how they work, etc. I really just want a simple diagram so we can teach her the proper names of everything, and a short & simple explanation of what everything is for.

Or, is there a section of Barnes & Noble that would be good for me to go look at possible books? I don't go to the book store very much so I'm not familiar with all of their sections lol

Thanks for your help!

Hi S.,

The American Girl book is GREAT. But, 5 may be a bit young for that.... I got it for my daughter in between 1st and 2nd grade I think. I think it's called "The Care and Keeping of You". You could buy it and read over the pages with her that you think are relevant. There are some good pictures that are pretty specific - without going into too much detail.

Be cautious at this age..... you don't want to give her TOO much info. Also remember that when she goes to school she is going to repeat 75% of what shes told, so maybe just the basics for a couple more years.

I am with you, though - I always answered my daughters questions honestly.

Hit the library. Ask the librarians if they can recommend something, and that way you can try before you buy.

Just use her body and tell her the names of her parts. Show her some of yours and just explain why yours are different-- she's a girl you are a woman, blah blah.
I really dont think you need a book.
Just tell her she has a teeny hole wear pee comes out thats called a urethra, and another hole wear poop comes out called an anus. Depending on her need to know you can also tell her she has another hole called a vagina where babies come out of.
