I am just about 6w pg and am having a hard time finding things to drink to keep myself hydrated but not nautious. I used to just drink water, but that is making me feel sick now. I don't want to drink a lot of sugar or fake sugars... I bought Good Earth Caffeine Free Original Tea and have checked the herbs on several sites, they all give a different list of herbs to avoid while pg. I'm confused if I can drink this or not. It has:
Red Rooibos, chicory root, rosehips, cinnamon, peppermint, lemongrass, papaya, chamomile, panax ginseng leaves, anise seed, ginger root, dandelion root, orange peel

I liked drinking orange juice with 7Up or sprite mixed with it. Sometimes when I was feeling gross, I'd also mix apple juice and gingerale. Plus if you stick it in a fancy glass you feel like your drinking champagnE!!! :0) Good luck!!

Hi, While I was pregnant with my 3rd, I drank this tea called Mother's Milk. It is supposed to help you with Milk production. I asked my OB and he ok'd it. Or what about pepermint or chamomile? I'm not sure about those herbs, but ask your Dr. Have you tried those flavored waters? I am not sure about sugar content. Water kind of made me feel sick also. I read that it is pretty normal and that is why you should try and give your child pedialyte or something with electrolytes when they are nauseated, same with mom's also! Hope this helps!

CS, the popular caveat against taking any herbs during pregnancy is bunk and based on ignorance on the part of the medical community. Any acupuncturist who has been trained in Chinese medical gynecology knows that there are only a few herbs that cannot be taken during pregnancy. Traditionally, herbal medicines have been used throughout pregnancy with great success, for specific problems that pertain to pregnancy. (The question is not, can herbs be taken? but rather, what herbs are appropriate for which condition.) It's a matter of finding a practitioner who has been properly trained in herbology as it relates to gynecological issues.

And, commercial teas like Good Earth do not contain large enough amounts of herbs to have strong therapeutic effects, so they are likely safe.

If the nausea doesn't subside, acupuncture has a great track record for relieving it during pregnancy--even without herbs!

Ginger Ale was soothing to me. I was nautious for 6 months out of my pregnancy! Hope you feel better. I stay away from herbal things due to heart palpitations so I can't help you there. There are alot of herbal teas without that many ingredients though.

CS,
I was told to not drink any herbal products during my pregnancy. I had two wonderful Chinese doctors also. I was told not to drink herbal teas, or take herbal supplements. I am not sure why, but that is how I was advised through my doc's. It was hard I was very sick with my son. I really just stuck with water. Definitely no artificial sweeteners of any sort either. They are all terribly bad for you let alone the baby growing inside you. I would maybe take a natural juice and maybe water it down to see if that is what will help your nausea. Good luck!

When I was pregnant with both kids, we went to Sam's Club and got BIG boxes of Luzianne Decaffeinated Tea.

It's not an exciting flavor, but the lack of caffeine was good for the pregnancy, and it was something different from water/diet soda.

I don't know about the avoidance of herbs during pregnancy. I'd recommend either asking your OB/GYN or visiting the website for the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology to see what their recommendation/policies regarding those herbs are.

I do know that you can drink certain teas, like black tea and some herbal teas, but keep in mind there is some caffeine as is in most teas. Also, green tea has an ingredient that counteracts some of the essential ingredients in prenatal vitamins. However, when I was pg with my 4th baby last year a friend of mine told me to try mineral water. Wow! That actually helped minimize the nausea; not completely, but enough for me to feel better since I was nausious plenty. I tried lime and lemon mineral water. I liked lime better, but try it and see for yourself!
