Target Won't Take Back Baby Registry Gift.

Has anyone else had any problems with Target failing to exchange a baby registry gift because you did not have the gift receipt? I received two Close and Secure Sleepers and wanted to exchange one for store credit but they refuse because I don't have the gift receipt, even though the product barcode shows the items was theirs. I spoke with two store managers and I'm stumped at this, especially because most of the gifts I received didn't come with gift receipts.

What can I do next?

Target is HORRIBLE at exchanges without receipts. My husband got a DVD for Christmas one year of a movie he already had, clearly labeled with the Target sticker. He didn't want a refund, just an even exchange, and they wouldn't do it without the gift receipt. We couldn't believe it, especially since we just wanted an exchange...

I've had several problems with returns to Target as well as a return when we registered there. After we registered, we realized that they had a more limited selection and higher prices than Babies R Us and Baby Depot so I ended up registering at those places and removed several items from our Target registry. We only left a handful of items on our Target registry.
That was where my mistake was made because while I did not have a gift receipt, the item was clearly theres but I also did not have the item on my registry (so I was liable for a gift givers choice to go off the registry).
It was truly ridiculous as it was a bib and a small outfit but they absolutely would not take the return. Nearly two years later, I have them tucked away so that I will now be able to regift them because that's all I could do with them.
I've found that Walmart is excellent with returns (as long as it's not an electronic), Babies R Us is great too but be careful with items they say are clearanced but still being sold at the higher price.
While these are not baby stores, it's good a list to keep in mind when shopping.
Best Buy charges a restocking fee on most all items they carry, even those that are not open.
Walmart will do a return with or without a receipt for most items they sell including food (I've gotten some rotten meat from there before and they were terrific with the return on that as well)
Costco will take back everything with or without a receipt. They truly are fabulous in the customer care department.
Mervyn's is also very good at returns without a receipt (I tend to misplace paper items...what can I say) but again you are susceptable to whatever their lowest price was.
Home Depot is hit and miss. Some items they will return easily while others they absolutely will not (or actually will only give you a penny for, even if they are still carrying the item you purchased for the same price) and will not even allow an exchange.
Lowe's is wonderful with returns and quickly gets you in and out.
Ace Hardware is also wonderful at returns from the one item I've had to return.
Sears is okay in some areas but difficult in others. If you purchase something via online or the catalog, you're basically stuck with it (or pay excessive shipping)

Good luck and "MANY HAPPY RETURNS!" ;)

maybe the better business beaureau needs to take a look at target

Good news. I sold my close and secure on Ebay for pretty much it's retail value :) Also, if you really want to get your money back print out your registry, buy the darn thing off of it (make sure they scan it), then you can go to customer service with both of those bulky boxes and say, "someone bought me 3 of these." They will only return (as of a few months ago) if it was marked as purchased on your registry. Nice huh?

I returned a lot of items from my registry. For items without gift receipts, they allowed the return with no problems if they were shown on the registry as purchased. I also had a couple without gift receipt but were not shown as purchased. They took the items and stated that each customer is allowed to receive credit for a limit of two items. This happened in December 07. Not sure if they changed the policy.

Their policy has changed and allows two returns under $20 a year. My advice is to call and ask for the district manager's phone number. Call and explain you have proof via registry and not a gift receipt. Explain you are a regular customer plan on spending a lot of money on your newborn and would like to do it at Target. If he/she cannot make the exception you will need to go to Walmart. That should get the district manager to make the exception and allow the store to take it back.
I had it work for me. I had a double on my registry on a $79.99 item that was clearly theirs and the managers said no. The DM called the store and told them to take it back for credit for me.
Good Luck.

Their policies changed around Sept. of last year, so they will not use your registry as proof of purchase anymore! I had my beautiful 4 month old daughter in January and could not return most of everything that I needed to.

They are so bad now, even if you have a gift receipt, if it's not the same packaging or on their shelves anymore they won't take it!!! The coloring changed on their "Circo" brand tags so they wouldn't take back a blanket that had been on my registry AND I had a gift receipt.

I will NEVER use them for registering again!!! I also got multiples of everything because things did not come of the registry in the first place, so I've taken things back to Walmart since Target wouldn't.

The other thing is that, they will allow 2 $20 returns a year. So if you have something worth over $20,(which most things are), they will not take it back no matter what. You cannot combine your 2 $20 to make $40, if that makes sense. I had a baby carrier that was around $40 I believe, and I was stuck with it because they are the only ones who carry that specific one. I just hope that some people I know start to have babies, because I have plenty of stuff!!!

P.S. Babies R Us has been AWESOME at returns!!!!! No problems, no limits, etc....

Hi,
I used to work at Target and they used to be good at exchanges. Maybe try going to a different Target (a hassle, I know). I don't know about their policies now because it has been a few years but there is no reason for them NOT to exchange it. And make sure they do look up your registry. If not, do make a complaint to the headquarters, make sure to give them the particular Target also. Oh,, and give the manager's name as well. Store manager and floor manager. Whoever you deal with. One thing the store managers don't like are complaints, it can affect their bonuses. Good Luck,
C.

ANd a prayer to your little girl.

Did you let them know it was from your registry. After I told them this they looked up my registry and matched it with a purchase and took it as a return.
