Taking up Jogging... So Far So Good...

Hi all,
I've amazed even myself at taking up jogging, and I really enjoy it. My brother is a marathoner and gives me some pointers, but is no use for the jogging stroller. Does anyone have good tricks for running form or posture when using a jogging stroller? Ours seems to be out of alignment, as after 4 steps with only one hand on the handlebar, it's turning left -- I'd like to use at least one arm off of the handlebars. I was also wondering (this may sound dumb...) when I jog without a kiddo, I'd like to be able to carry stuff (like run to the grocery store, 1 mile away, and bring back a bag of flour; or run to the library to return a book or two). A backpack is too bouncy...

Any other hints about running would be helpful! I can run 3 miles now, and it's really fun!

i don't have any pointers...but keep up the good work! running w/a stroller definitely makes you stronger!

Really good question, W.. I've been wondering the same thing re the backback. What about loading stuff onto the stroller? By the way- why don't you take the stroller to a bicycle repair shop. I'm sure they could fix the alignment.

I have been running with a jogging stroller for about a year now. The problem may be the type of stroller. It is common for them to "pull" a little, but it shouldn't be so bad that you can't run with 1 hand. I am able to without any problem. I have a TikeTech. The "Bob" is supposed to be amazing. Strollers strictly for running are best with at least the 16" wheel and one that the front wheel doesn't turn. I have heard several complaints about the jogging strollers typically sold at Babies R Us, like the Jeep or Baby Trend.
Maybe its just the type. I think the Jeep and Baby trend are aren't as good quality as some of the other more $ ones. The Tike Tech is middle of the road as far as cost, but I am really pleased with it.
You could always take the stroller to a bike shop too. They might be able to help you with the alignment. They helped me with my brakes before.
Hope this helps- happy jogging!

Hi W.,
That's so great that you were able to take this up and enjoy it so much! I'm a former (pre-child)marathoner who started running again a few months ago. It's funny how finding the time to run 3-4 miles with an almost 2 year old shouting "out out" in the stroller feels almost as big of an accomplishment as finishing the NYC marathon!
I agree that you should definitely bring the stroller into a bike store to see if they can help. Second choice would be to contact the manufacturer. I like to have one arm free b/c it helps me to maintain the correct form (i.e. avoid leaning on the stroller when huffing and puffing up hills or recovering on a down hill). Although I applaud your enthusiasm about wanting to multitask, I'd think twice about adding weight (in the form of books etc.) while running at the same time that your joints are adjusting to this new activity. As your mileage increases, you'll be more prone to injury. Transporting items could add to the wear and tear.
In any case, I hope that you enjoy the beautiful fall weather (such a beautiful time to be outside)!
Happy running!

What about using a performance bar that prevents lactic acid formation (it is the lactic acid that gives you the muscle ache that you may have a few hours later or the next day if it is a challenging work out; I use "Access Bar" 20 minutes before working out, on an empty stomach and it works so well; in winter, I use it before shoveling!!! I will be happy to give you one, if you want. my favorite one tastes like a sneakers bar type; sometimes I use a choc mint one; I think that jogging in the presence of your child has many advantages: there is a message that you take care of yourself and at the same time spend quality time together. I am an avid mamasource member as we learn from each other. hope you jog today!!:)
