Taking off Diaper/clothes

My 23 month old daughter takes off her clothes and her diaper when she lays down for a nap or at night. She doesn't always take them off, but here lately it has been almost a nightly thing. My mother bought her three pj sets that the top snaps to the bottoms and if she has those on then she is fine, but I only have three of these. I have bought the pj sets that zip completely up and she now knows how to un-zip these. I don't know why she is all of a sudden wanting to be naked with no diaper on. The diaper some times is completely clean with no pee or poop in it and she still takes it off. Every time she lays down I have to wait a while and go in and check on her to see if she is naked, etc. It is becoming a hassle to have to change all her bedding and clean her up each night because she has peed or pooped, etc. She does show some interest in the potty and will sit on it, but will not go in it. I have tried talking to her about keeping her clothes and diaper on. I have tried almost everything and nothing seems to work. I am looking for suggestions on what I can say or do to help her not to take off all her clothes and diaper. Heck I don't even care if she takes off her clothes, but I want her to keep her diaper on...haha.

So What Happened?

Well she now can get out of her three snap pj sets too!! She just did this last night. So much for always re-washing them. btw three snap up pj sets are enough, but I was looking for another alternative. After last night though even the snap up pj sets are not working. I do always put on clean pjs at night too, so I can get more uses out of the pjs, but I put her in the snap up pjs during naps and at night so three doesn't last too long. There is no use in buying more of these because she can take them off now. I might be able to try some of the other suggestions or just live with it for a while. Hopefully it is a stage that she will soon grow out of. Thanks for all the great advice!!

The diaper safety pins that are used for the cloth diapers work great for my 20 month old that does the same thing. Put it through next to the zipper and then through the hole on the zipper tab or over the zipper tab and back through the other side of the zipper. Also, If you have two piece pjs with no snaps you can connect the top and bottom with a diaper pin on each side. She doesn't even try to get them off now :)

Mine would take off their blanket sleeper, and then lay there totally cold all night. I started putting their sleeper on inside out. That way everything is in the correct place footie wise, and they can't get the zipper down.
Good luck!

C., just a question first. Do you put her in clean pj's every night? I am asking because I put the pj's on after the bath and just before bed at night when my children were little and got them dressed first thing in the morning. If you do that you can use the snap on pj's for at least two nights in a row before throwing in a load of laundry. That would help some because it would be more difficult for her to take the pajamas off!
I am the old school person and believe me have been chewed on by a couple of mom's because my children were all (3 of them) toilet trained by 18 months old. Yes, I would start the toilet training process. And, by the way, none of my children were emotionally damaged by being toilet trained early on in their lives. It was actually beneficial because when it came time for Sunday School, pre-school, etc., I had no problems placing them and it was a lot easier for the baby sitters when I had one come to the house.
Good luck.

My brother and his wife had to duct tape their daughters diaper on every night for several months to keep it on. Try and see if that might work for you.

I'm confused, why isn't 3 sets of PJs enough? Another option is cloth diapers that snap or hook instead of velcro. But really, you put her in PJs for a few days at a time and wash them during the day on the weekend and put her back in them.

One trick I discovered with my grandkids when the little ones decide to undress while napping or supposed to be napping, is to put on a zipper sleeper backwards, then they can't take it off. If you think it will be uncomfortable with the feet in the wrong place, you can use some of her old ones and trim off the bottom footies. Another trick is to put on her sleeper and then put a onesie on top of that. Usually they can't get that off.
A lot of babies do this so don't think you are the first one to tackle this wardrobe malfunction.

Good Luck!

I think it's just a phase. My friends little girl did it for about 6mo. Poor Donna just let her do it to get it out of her system. Once she peed and pooped without the clothes on and it scared her to death so that stopped it. She wasn't scared on the potty or in the diaper. Just when she was naked.

I laughed while reading this.. I have almost the same problem. My son is 22 months and will not keep his clothes on either. I get cold just looking at them walking around half naked.. He refuses to wear shoes all together... something we are working h*** o*, he will wear socks but only till we get to the car and off they go... he will take his pants off immiediately unless they are the tightly fitted ones like pj's that are tight around the ankles.. he will leave shorts on though.. and he takes his diaper off usually right before he goes to the bathroom or right after... many times it is right after and I know the mess.. I turn around and he is running from me with a but full of poop!! The other day I woke him up to find he had his shorts still on but his diaper was on the floor... Now he is houdini!

This will sound funny, but I have been known to use duct tape on my kids diapers. My 4 year old took hers off when she was about that age and it was quite a mess. Duct tape worked great!

Hi C.,
My daughter is the same age and did the same thing. I have been told that this is how they exert their independence and try to be in control. In other words they're thinking "You can put these clothes on me but it doesn't mean I have to keep them on!" My daughter did this for about a month then she got over it. I'm sorry i don't have any advice for you. I just thought it would help if you knew a reason for the behavior. Good luck.

For some reason, when both of our daughters hit 2 years old, running around naked became LOTS of fun! At night, we give our 27 month old a little "naked running around time" when we change her diaper and before putting on her pajamas -- she runs around yelling "WHEEEEEE WHEEEEEEE". You should see them when it's bath time....DH heads upstairs and turns on the water in the tub, and they go running "Daddy....WAIT!!!!" and he'll come out saying "I NEED NAKED BOOTIES!!" The 5 year old starts stripping on her way up the stairs, while the 2 year old starts going up the stairs saying, "climb climb climb".

For what it's worth....and good luck!

She loves the pajamas with feet that have the long zipper. She hasn't tried to get out of them yet, but if she does and starts taking them off, we already know our plan of attack - the same as it is during the day (since she knows how to take her pants off and then wants to take off her diaper): Put a onesie on underneath her clothes. Once she couldn't put her hands in her diaper or try to take them off, she quit.

She is too young to reason with. She does it because she can! The fascination will probably wear off soon, but in the meantime, just keep the pj's washed that she can't remove, or get a couple more sets of them. Good luck!

One word: BRIBERY. I have struggled with my own budding nudist for 5 and a half years now. Not only has she always preferred to sleep naked, she was also a poo painter (Thank god she outgrew that) Don't worry about the clothes, just find something small that she likes (i used suckers for my daughter) and tell her when you put her down that if she leaves her diaper on she can have one first thing in the morning. Then keep checking on her and reminding her that she has to leave the diaper on until you're sure she's asleep. In the morning if the diaper is still on give her the treat. As far as the potty training thing goes, bribery helps some with that too, in our house it was gummie snacks for pee and hershey kisses for poops. Works better if there's a little competition going on though with a neighbor kid or other kids at the babysitters etc.

My 2.5 y.o. likes to take off his clothes and/or diaper, too. We have constant conversations about what his choice is. "If you don't want to wear your diaper, you have to use your potty. Which do you want to do?" Mostly he picks to wear the diaper, sometimes he uses his potty. I personally understand how confining wearing clothes is, and hate to sleep in anything. So, when my kid ditches all of his clothes, I get it. It drives my husband crazy, and he always asks, "Why is he naked?" I finally got tired of having the conversation so I just answer, "because he took his clothes off." LOL. He is a very analytical person, and this cause effect answer drives him crazy. So, now he either doesn't ask or works harder to get an answer closer to why he is asking in the first place. Anyway, the baby and I make a deal. I tell him that he can keep his clothes off for a little while. I usually give him about 30 minutes. Then I dress him again. Usually he will stay clothed if I give him a little breathing time to feel loose and fancy free. If he uses his potty properly during that time, he gets applause. I'm not big on rewarding stuff, but he gets lots of smiles, attention, applause. For what it's worth, see what two choices you can give her that you can live with.

WE had a version of this problem, and I can relate it is very messy. The only thing that worked for us, was to buy zip up jammies, cut the feet off and put them on backwards, everthing else he could escape from. We called them his straight jackets, when he wasn't around : )

my niece did this for a while. Who knows with kids>
My sister put her clothes on backwards and that seemed to do the trick.
If that is not enough, buy a roll of duct tape and put it across the diaper, all the way around and ending in back. You'll have to keep a scissors by your changing table to get the stuff off!

Cut the feet out of some zip up jammies and put them on backwards. You can also put a onesie on under her jammies and clothes. I've heard the duct tape too! Hopefully it will just be a phase that passes soon!
