Taking My Daughter to the Dentist Tomorrow

this is the first time either of my kids will need work, my two year old has weakened enamel(milk carries) I know her teeth need to be capped, i am getting the ones that are tooth colored in front. What i am not sure of is how they will numb her, give her, and how she will react.

Personally the dentist traumatizes me, i had alot of work done as a kid because of genetic soft enamel, and my adult experiences with it have been quite scary too.

How did your kids react?, what method was used on them to numb them and, what kind of caps did you get for milk carries (which are different than cavities)

Ok I use to work for a pediatric dentist before I had my kids.
My first part of advice to give you is-u said the dentist traumatizes u-which I am assuming u mean u dislike going there as so many do, but please do not let your children pick up on your fear-encourage them.
Second milk carries-are the same as cavities-a cavity is a cavity.
Is this their first visit and is it a pediatric dentist? Usually they use some sort of sedation-whether it be an oral liquid sedation in combination with laughing gas or just laughing gas alone which gives them a euphoric feeling and relaxes them-does not put them to sleep. And then they numb with an injection just like you or I would get, but they are so relaxed kids usually never know they got one and they do not call it shots there so they never know they got a shot.
As far as the caps go if it is the front teeth they usually use the silver caps with white facing to look like a real tooth.
Hope this helps and if u need any other answers feel free to ask. L. :)

I can't answer the cap question, but when my oldest needed dental work at age 2, they put her out then numbed her. As a mom, it scared me half to death and I had to stand in the hallway and peek thru the glass window of the door because I was bawling my eyes out seeing her lie there like a limp rag doll. she woke up smiling and drooling..quite hilarious!

I also was traumatized by the dentist as a kid...and had some bad experiences as an adult but I tried to show my kids that the dentist was a good thing even tho I was scared. When my kids got a bit old enough to understand, I would be honest and tell them that sometimes it's going to hurt but after it is all done, they're teeth will be beautiful!

When my oldest turned 12 and needed braces (turns out I also needed them..just could never afford it), we went in together and got braces at the same time. I wanted to show her that she was not alone and if I can do this..so can she. She got hers off before me!!!

Another thing that helped..when I was 4, my mom took me to the dentist (again). I was crying my eyes out just sitting in the waiting room becoz I knew it was going hurt. My mom leaned over and handed me a napkin. She whispered, "I know it's scary baby, but here take this napkin and when you feel any pain or if you get scared..squeeze it really really hard! It will help you get through it!" I'm 41 and I still bring a napkin in with me when I sit in the dental chair! I have also done this with all my kids...

Hi A..
I'm sure things will go fine and the dentist will be very considerate of your child's comfort level. I have always been afraid of the dentist, but didn't want my kids to be. So whenever they have to go I put on my bravest face and act like everything is great. My son LOVES going to the dentist now, and my daughter, who is graduating this spring, is planning to go to college to become a dentist.
They take their cues (sp) from us. If we're okay, they're okay too. Hang in there and be brave. I'm sure it will be a much better experience than you remember.
Good luck and God Bless!

Definitely make sure it's a pediatric dentist!! Ask the office what the procedure is before your go in so you know what to expect. Find out exactly what medication will be administered and do your own research. If you are not comfortable with it, get a second opinion. Just my 2 cents! I used to work for a general dentist and he would always refer little ones to a pediatric dentist for any cavities.

I found out one of my daughter's teeth came in with no enamel so at 3 she had to have a root canal and capped. Like the other mom's said make sure it is a pediatric dentist. They gave her some medicine to calm her nerves and than gave her laughing gas. They had about 3 assistants and they had the root canal and tooth capped in about 10 minutes if that. They didn't mess around and the great thing is at that age they don't remember.
She will do great.

Please wait until you can find a pediatric dentist, they will actually put the children under anesthesia in an operating room and do the work without them knowing what is going on.

I had so much trauma in the dentist chair when I was a child and it will be with me forever. I was held down and had a root canal while screaming the medicine didn't work. A good pediatric dentist will use all white caps/filling material and do very good work. One oral surgeon kept rubbing his arms on my breasts while examining my teeth before pulling my wisdom teeth. Please wait and find the proper dentist.

Just be sure you are going to a Pediatric Dentist that knows how to deal with children and keep them pain free. My Pediatric Dentist uses oral medication. Works wonders, but the child is out of it for a while afterwards. I once took my daughter to a dentist that literally pulled out a straight jacket and told me my daughter would have to be confined in order to work on her. I said NO WAY and we left. I couldn't believe it! So, don't assume this dentist is good with children. Make sure before any work is done. NO ONE should ever experience pain at the dentist...if you do you need to go to a different denitist. Good Luck!

Hi there, I'm a Dental Hygienist and I'm happy to help. Generally for children they give Nitrous Oxide Sedation (laughing gas) so they are unaware when they administer the shots inside the mouth. I would suggest that you check with your dental office as to what their usual procedure is. I feel certain that these days most offices are much better at dealing with children and anxiety control. I'll bet she hardly remembers it happened afterwards. : )
