Table Food - Celina, TX

When and what table foods have you offered your little ones?

My niece is 8 months old and has yet to have anything but Stage 2 babyfood. She is eating 7-8 jars of food per day. I really think she is hungry! She eats Banannan Puffs and that is the ONLY real "food" she is eating. They do not think she can handle anything else. They do not understand when they put sweet peas in fromt of her why she won't eat them. Any words wisdom?

What can I do next?

Honestly, although the amount of food she is eating seems like a lot, it is pretty normal to hold off on table foods right now. My kids have always started around 10 months or so, but even then, could not (or would not) eat just anything. Baby food is pretty healthy, unless of course they are giving her "junk" baby food like tapioca pudding or desserts (why do they make that stuff anyway?). But really, I hate to say it, but I would not worry about it..kids all develop at different stages, and maybe her parents realize that she just is not ready yet. ~A.~

She does seem to be eating alot. They should start the #3 foods, they are a little thicker and will probably fill her up! My son is 10 months and we started giving him table food like peas, carrots, cheese at about 8 months and now he pretty much eats everything we do, except for beef its a little to hard to tear since he doesn't have any molars yet, but he loved chicken, pasta, yogurt, tomatoes, pinto beans, green beans, peas, broccoli and many other things. Good luck!

Avocadoes!! Babies love them, just make sure they're very ripe and cut into little pieces. It is a very nutritious first food and easy to digest. Also, mashed sweet potato, bananas, anything soft. My little guy is 10 months old and completely went on an eating strike at 6 1/2 months, he was tired of purees. So we started giving him "real" food and now he eats any and everything (including green veggies). Good luck. It also depends on the child, my daughter is as picky as the day is long!! Beware of the puffs, my daughter ate them all the time and I think that's why she is so partial to "snack" foods now and not real foods.

She may not be ready yet. Every child is different. I think my son was closer to a year before we gave him table foods. He just wasn't that interested until that point.

BTW, 7-8 jars a day seems a bit excessive. She should be getting the bulk of her nutrition from breast milk or formula at this age. Solid foods are really just play the first year.

From the time my kids were 9 months old I just fed them what my husband and I ate; with a few exceptions. I just cut it up small, and laid a mess on a plate, and let the baby pick and eat. For a while they threw the food, but eventually figured out this is what they were eating now.

I agree with Lisa 7-8 jars a day seems a bit excessive. At that age she should be getting the bulk of her nutrition from the formula. Solids are practice swallowing for the first year and you build up from there until they can eat table foods at 12 months. She should be having cereal in the morning and jar foods during lunch and dinner...of course 4 to 5 bottles a day of formula.
