Swollen Lymph Nodes - Corinth,MS

I just wondered if anyone else had ever dealt with this. My almost 4 year old has swollen lymph nodes on each side of his neck. He had a bacterial infection on Jan. 2 and took a 10 day round of antibiotic. He has been finished with the meds for over a week and they are still swollen. Last night, I noticed that he has another knot on his left side, they are about the size of a pea. My husband says I am a worry-wart, but I dont like things to appear that are not supposed to be there. I have a call in to his pediatrician and I also made an appt. with his ENT just to be on the safe side. I know that when he was younger, his pediatrician told me that sometimes they swell to try and fight off an infection, but these have been here for about a month and I am getting very concerned and need peace of mind. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

First of all, I want to thank each and everyone of you for your responses and advice. Just reading your posts did help calm my nerves a little before I actually took him to the dr. Well, we went to the dr. on Friday and he checked under his arms and in his groin area just to be sure they were not anywhere else. He did a complete blood panel and all came back normal. Nothing was elevated or low and there was no sign for concern. He did tell me to just keep an eye on the nodes and be sure they did not get any larger and that he did not have them appear anywhere else. Also, he said that once they have swollen like that, it is most likely they will never be "normal" size again. This really gave me peace of mind to know there was no cause for alarm. Thank you mothers for being a part of this site.. it is awesome to know that you do not face the trials and fears alone... somewhere, someone has walked in these steps prior to you! Thanks again!

2 of my kids (ages 9 and 10) have always had large lymph nodes in the neck on a regular basis. they get EVEN BIGGER when they are sick - but these 2 kids are sick less often than my oldest one and his nodes are normal size. The doc said some kids just have larger nodes and that is okay - means their body is getting rid of things before they "take root" - so unless they get MUCH larger, or hard or painful to touch, he said not to worry about it. It is hard to NOT to worry - but as time has gone by and they've been fine, I have relaxed a little more...

You're not being a worry wart.....you're being a mommy. =0) Taking him in to his doctors will give you your peace of mind back. It's always better to be safe. I'd be doing the exact same thing.

I understand your concern. I felt the same way when my son developed swollen lymph nodes--I think he was only two at the time. I can't remember how long they lasted but I do know the doctor told me it wasn't anything to worry about. He's 19 now and very healthy.

My daughter had this also. I did take her to the doctor and they told me the same thing. Hers also lasted a little over a month. But, I think you're doing the right thing to still take that visit to the doctor office.

Make sure you give him vitamins or something to boost his immune system. There are many things on the market for kids.

I don't know.
Maybe you need to let him see a Doctor.
If I didn't know any better maybe he might have mumps.
Can he eat a pickle without hurting.
That was one of the ways they checked in my days if you had mumps.

Just an suggestion
I too would be concern.

When I had the mumps they were on bothe side.
And I had an ear infection bothears.
I just get him back into see the doctor to make sure.

Dear B.,

Don't worry about being a worry wart - I'm one too! When my youngest was in kindergarten, he got really sick, sicker than he had ever been. (It was a tough kindergarten year for us!!) I had taken him to the doctor already because of high fever, constant sleeping and bloody poop (it looked like strawberry jam - yuck!) They sent the stool sample off for analysis and while I waited for the results, taking care of him at home and trying to keep him hydrated, 2 days later I realized he had these HUGE knots in his neck, kind of like Frankenstein. I got on the internet and looked up something regarding it, and one of the differentials was leukemia. I can tell you I almost couldn't breathe with worry, so I called back and told them I had to see a doctor that day - I wanted a blood test. They accommodated me, and the doctor was very kind. He told me the swollen nodes in the neck were part of the body's way of fighting infection. He pointed to his collar bones and said that if the lymph nodes were swollen there, then we'd have something to worry about. The blood work did not show any leukemia. (Just to let you know, what was wrong with my son was salmonella. That takes a long time to get over.)

So have some peace of mind here, but go back to the doctor and ask for blood work to be done. Not sure what the ENT has to do with it, but I'd get the pediatrican to do the blood work. Maybe they have a butterfly needle, which is much easier for your little guy!

All my best,

B., Being able to palpate (feel) lymph nodes is normal especially around the head and neck area. They should feel about the size of a pea and should "roll" or move when you touch them. Often times they appear a little larger or you may notice them more when your child is fighting off an infection, just getting one or just getting over one. You should be concerned if they are enlarged, fixed (don't move)or are painful. Continue to monitor the lymph nodes for changes. Anytime a parent has concerns about their child's health, always take them in to see the doctor for her advice and to establish a baseline. You can also google your question or go to ask.com for more information. I hope this helps.
