Swollen Glands in Children

Good Morning and Happy Mothers Day everyone. Hope you have a wonderful, restful day.

That being said, I have a concern that I would like to post to all of you wonderful mothers. My daugther is 15 months old. Friday morning, when I changed her diaper, I noticed a bump, or lump I guess you could say in her groin area. It just appeared there. It is along her diaper line, but close to her pelvic bone. I decided to wait over the weekend to see if things change, before freaking out and calling her ped. Today is sunday, and it seems to have gotten a little bigger. yesterday, there was 2, one small one, now one again. It is about the size of a lima bean, doesn't seem painful, and is moveable under the skin.

Now, I do know that this is an area of glands, and one could possible be swollen. But of course, I know that there is only a slight chance it could be something else. But what shall I do from here. I usually err on the side of caution, and would take her to the ped, but a dr visit is so traumatic for her. If it's best, then surely I would take her, but is there any thing they can do for this.

Other than a little coughing and sneezing now and then, she doesn't seem sick or anything like that.

Hopefully someone has had this happen, or knows about this crazy stuff and can help.
Have a wonderful day
R.

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your advice. I called the dr office, and they wanted me to bring her in. They saw her immediately, which is kind of troublesome. The doctor couldn't locate any obvious reason for the swelling. She took it's measurements, and sent us for bloodwork. We should know something by end of the week.

If you call and explain it the nurse or doctor will tell you if you need to come in. My son had a lump in his next, they had me come in because of the location - but it was fine. The Dr. said it can take up to a year for it to dissipate.

I'm no doctor so I don't know for sure what it is but I had this happen to me before and it was cat scratch fever (that's what they call it). Your glands can swell in different areas. It's really not that bad if it is this and usually will just go away. But I would at least call the doctor and tell them what's going on and see if you should bring her in or wait. They may ask you a few more questions, maybe it's just from a little cold she's trying to fight off. Good luck and I hope it goes away for you.

Call the doctor. Talk to a nurse and tell her what you've found. If they tell you to bring her in, do it. If not, they will probably tell you what it could be and how you can treat it. It's better to be safe than sorry. Good luck!

Good morning R.,

I had a similiar experience with my son, who also finds the visit to the doctor to be traumatic event. His lumps appeared one in the back of the head area and then one in his cheek. The cheek lump seemed strange to us so we did bring him to the doctor. We were told it was a swollen gland and to keep an eye on it for heat or growth.

Try calling you doctor's office and speak to a nurse. Maybe they can give you some peace of mind.

Good luck,

R.

Hi R., I would take your daughter to the ped. One of my daughters limpnodes (sp) got really swollen underneath her arm pit and it was cat scratch fever. They were also suggesting leukimia before they knew what it was. Just to be safe. Swelling of the glands usually indicates an infection.

It is most likely nothing, because it is not red or hurts. Children this age can have a swollen lympth node (which is what this is) for just a little cough. If a child has a little cold their lymth node will swell. They have to be complete sick-free (which isn't just doesn't happen) for awhile before their lymth nodes go back to normal.
For your own mind, take her to the doctor. But don't worry too much about it, really! :)

I had thyroid cancer, and before it was diagnosed the doctor wasn't sure if it was thyroid or lymthnoma. Thank God it was my thyroid!!! About 1 year later, my son had a lump in his neck- of coarse I was freakin out!!!! I took him to the doctor, then to a specialist. Had blood work done. Both the doctor and the specialist told me what I just told you. He still has the lump- but he also still has a little runny nose (allergies)

R.,
I would give your Ped a call and ask about it, It is better to get it checked out than to assume it is just a swollen gland.

Is it red around the area? Does she have a fever?
