Switching to a Cup

It seems as though everything has changed since my son. My daughter is 1 years old and using a sippy cup. I was reading a magazine the other day that said you should swap to a regular cup at 12 months. Is this acurate? If so I would really appreciate some ideas to help with the transition.

What can I do next?

It's funny you asked this. Just this week 2 new studies came out finding that sippy cups can cause oral problems and speech difficulties. I got rid of all mine this week and we have been using a regular cup and my son has been doing just fine. You can google sippy cups and probably find the research done. I know mothering.com has an article.

I have not heard that...my daughter is 21 months and still uses a sippy cup! By no means is she ready for a regular cup but i would love to know the answer to this also!!

She can stay on a sippy cup a while longer and that should be fine. However dont give it to her at nite as like a substitute for a bottle cause that will ruin her teeth. I think you shouldnt only give her a sippy cup, kinda use both at times and then gradually she will go to the regular cup..Be Blessed

I just read that too... my daughter is 26 months old & I haven't switched to a regular cup. They claim it can lead to tooth decay. I asked my husband about this (he's a dentist) and he said as long as we are brushing her teeth and giving her water throughout the day (not just milk or juice) then I shouldn't worry. I'm not ready to worry about cleaning up a mess after her everytime she drinks! I may start doing that at meal times but that's it. I don't think she would have been ready at 1 though. I wouldn't worry too much!

My daughters always used sippy cups until they weren't as clumsy so we wouldn't have a multi-colored carpet!!!! My 18 month old still uses a sippy while my 3 year old hasn't used one in a while. I think it is important to try teaching them how to drink out of a cup without them taking a bath with it...my daughter does that now, but I would never leave her alone with the cup because she spills it everywhere!!!!! I would just trust your own judgment on this one----you will know when your child is ready :)
