I am hypothyroid and I would like to switch from Synthroid to Armour thyroid. Although, my pharmacy is having a problem filling the Armour prescription. Has anyone else experienced this RECENTLY? I knew there were supply issues a few months back but I thought they were resolved.
Any help is appreciated.
Some Walgreens have it, you just have to call around, not all do. I have a friend who is a pharmacist at a Walgreens and she told me to tell a few of my friends who were on it, that they should go back to their Drs. It is becoming more available. Apparently there was a "raw Material" problem.
It's resolving slowly. The supply problem goes back for about a year.

Hi, I was on Armour for many years, and I have been told that it was in my best interest to get onto Levoxyl because the Armour is not able to keep up with the demand. As of today, their website is still saying "Updated Statement from Forest Laboratories Re: Availability of Armour Thyroid:
Forest Laboratories has been producing and shipping a steady supply of 1 grain (60 mg) and ½ grain (30 mg) doses of Armour Thyroid since February. We have focused our efforts on producing these dosage strengths because they account for approximately 70 percent of Armour Thyroid use and can be used alone or in multiples to achieve common total daily dosage requirements. We continue to work diligently to resolve the back-order of other Armour Thyroid dosage strengths.

Have you tried the online pharmacy through your insurance? You have to order 3 months at a time so it is a little expensive, but I never had a problem filling my prescription
A compound pharmacy should be able to help you. Also check all the usual pharmacies, CVS, walmart, walgreens, target, you may get lucky. I switched a month and a half ago and was able to get it filled at Walgreens.

Armour has been hard to find now for almost 9 months or so. I was able to find 1 grain at my Target Pharmacy in Hillside, but no where else, and no other dosage size. My endo said it was a production problem, I'm not sure. There are lots of rumors as to why it's going on. There is another natural thyroid hormone you can try called Nature Thyroid, but I think they are having the same issues because so many have switched to them. I've been lucky and have been on both- Synthroid AND Armour throughout my pregnancy, and have been able to make it work by taking 1 grain of Armour and adjusting my Synthroid dosage. You might want to try that first and see how it goes for you. Check into the Target pharmacy near you.

My husband use to take it and we used Walgreens. I would usually give them a 2 week heads up to refill. I would get 90 at a time so it wouldn't be that big of a deal. Good luck.

I have been on Armour for 3 yrs & LOVE IT. When it went out of production for a while my Endo sent me to People's Pharmacy, & they were able to "compound" a natural med comparable to the Armour. However, I just had to refill my prescription last week at People's they had Armour back in stock......not sure how long, but it's there right now. It is a production problem & been just as frustrating for pharmacists as the patients from what I understand.
Synthroid was AWFUL for me - if you can get something compounded when Armour is not in the pharmacys - that's better than going back to Syn. I have Hashimoto's which is "auto-immune" related & the Synthroid always caused a bad reaction for my situation.
I take Armour. My doctor told me that there was a problem and he wrote me a prescription for a compound of Westroid and Armour. It is a little bit more expensive and the insurance does not cover it as well. I was getting my Armour at Walmart even after he mentioned there was a problem.
I have the same problem and have needed to use a compound pharmacy. Mark's Drugs in Roselle will make it. Otherwise, try to get a 90 day supply. I always try to get mine refilled early. Walgreen's has been good about filling it for me early and holding onto it until my insurance covers it.
I was on Amour Thyroid for a period. Not everyone carries it anymore as it is rarely prescribed. I thought it would be a more natural alternative to a synthetic type of thyroid, however I had bad headaches on Amour and was told by a couple of different doctors and pharmacists that it was an impure therapy with side effects. Just food for thought. Good luck!
My husband used to be on that and we always had problems getting the precription filled. It would take about a month to get an entire 3 month supply. And we would get that in increments. The pharmacist said that the problem was with the supplier, not the pharmacy. And we were having these problems that ended when he stopped taking the meds which was aobut 2 months ago. And it seemed like the problems were going on for at least 6 months.
