Switching Formulas - Columbus,OH

We normally use Similac Advance and I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on switching between formulas? She's not had bad reactions to anything she's eaten (was primarily BF until introducing solids) and I had received some cans of Enfamil and was hoping to get some input about using them. Also, does anyone use or has tried the Go and Grow type formulas for older babies? Any thoughts for or against? Thank you for your advice!

What can I do next?

We switched back & forth all the time, whatever we had coupons for, was on sale, got for free, etc. We used the go & grow & it was fine, no side effects or anything. I didn't notice any difference between that & regular formula.

Hi Dawn. We started off on Similac and then wound up switching to generics. We had free cans that were given to us from the hospital, Dr, etc. But once I realized how expensive it was we looked for other options. We talked to the Dr. and compared labels. It's all the same ingredients with the same health benefits. I'd try not to switch very often. Gabe is not picky at all so he took to it well. We did the 6oz to 2oz ratio for a week and then up the generic gradually once a week. We use meijer brand now. It's half the price and on sale at least once every two weeks. Best of luck.

I switched DS back and forth with different formulas (the free cans, name brand and then generic) and had no problems. I aske dour ped first (also a mother of 4) and she said they were all the same. I had a free can of the grow and go older kid formula that I used with DD when I was weaning her and we had used up all the free cans of the regular stuff and I saw no difference. She turned a year last week and we're weaning her from formula to whole milk now. FYI, the cheapest formula out there, without coupons and sales, is Parent's Choice at Wal-Mart.

Hi Dawn,
My Daughters Doctor told me that Similac and Enfamil were the same except the color in one was darker. That is just to differenciate the 2. My daughter used both. I bought whatever was on sale or what i had a coupon for. If you sign up on Similac and Enfamil's websites they will send coupons to you.

We never used the Go and Grow because my daughter liked milk. My cousin had to use it because her son wouldn't drink milk at first. I would see if you daughter takes milk before buying the Go and Grow.

My daughter didn't have any issues with formula. We started her on Similac Advanced...and we gave her Enfamil as well. Then when I realized that the Target brand version of Similac Advanced was the same as Similac Advanced and Enfamil, I kept switching between the 3...it just depended on whether or not I had a great coupon for Similac or Enfamil. If not, I got the Target brand for almost half the price of the other two. Most of the formula we gave our daughter was the Target brand...and she's not 2 and never had any problems :-)

I was able to switch between Similac and Enfamil and my son didn't really have any issue, he was bf exclusively for 9 months and I used formula to supplement. After my son turned a year old, I gave him half a bottle of Pediasure everyday along with the whole milk, he is doing great with this. Hope this helps and good luck!

I don't know anything about formula except that no child needs it after 1-year and that those formulas for toddlers are just formula companies' way of getting even MORE money out of people who don't breastfeed. Save your money and give your child milk in a cup - not a bottle - at a year. Ask your doc if they think you need a multi-vitamin, but if you feed her a balanced diet, you shouldn't need a vitamin and definitely don't need extended formulas.

Hello Dawn. I would be careful about switching formulas on a regular basis. However, if you want to switch to a different formula (for what ever reason other than bad reaction to the current one) I would make it a gradual switch. When making an 8oz bottle do 6oz with old formula and 2oz of new formula and increase in 2oz incrimants. If you just want to use the other formula you received and not switch completly, I would just put 2oz of the new formula in her bottle and the rest the old formula brand she has been using. Hope that helps, there was another mom asking about switching to the Sam's Club brand and she received alot of great advice; you might want to check out her request and responses.

Hello- I'm a mom who has 2 children with allergies which was found by switching formulas so please be careful about doing this! This is for all you other moms who switch all the time too. A trip to the ER because of an allergic reaction is not fun. The formula for the over the age of 1 is great! we used it and it was worth the money to know my children were getting all their nutrition and it was actually about the same price as buying the special milk they had to have with their allergies!

I started my kids out on enfamil and they all had trouble with it. All of them were constantly throwing up or having bad stomach pains which made their bellies hard as a rock. Part of it was colic, but they could not tolerate milk based formula. I switched them over to a soy formula and they all did real well on it. You can try the enfamil, but if she shows any signs of it not agreeing with her then put her right back on the formula she's on now.

I switched formulas with my dd all the time. As long as she doesn't have any dairy allergies or anything you should be fine. Most formulas are the same, so it doesn't really matter. Enfamil does have a different consistency than Similac though. Similac seems to have the consistency of flour. IMO Enfamil was much easier to mix.

Hi Dawn! My daughter had been on formula her whole life and we did not switch back and forth. We tried once and she didn't do very well with it. At about 9 months, she was ready to be done with the bottle so we tried the Go and Grow and she loved it! We used 1/2 of that and 1/2 milk to wean her off the bottle. Worked pretty well! Good luck!

I tried the Enfamil with my son and he had projectile vomiting. I then found out that it was probably from acid reflux rather than the formula, but switched him anyway. I used the soy stuff with him for a while and that helped along with starting him on "soupy" cereal at quite an early age. I know the dr doesn't like it, but he slept through the night and NO MORE VOMITTING! With my daughter, we switched back and forth to which ever was on sale or cheapest, but usually similac or the parents choice that you can get from Wal-Mart. I would just make sure that she doesn't have any allergies to any of these before you buy a big can of anything that you won't be able to use, not mention you don't want her little tummy going through all of that. I would find one that works for her and is affordable for you and then stick with it. I BF both of my kids and they did fine with formulas afer the one that worked for them. Good luck.
